That's very interesting, and certainly dispels some ideas I had on the subject.
It's also a whole new direction for tabletop RPG campaigns; build up something so that it seems mysterious and strange and have the PCs chase this mystery...and then reveal it as something utterly mundane, so that everything they accomplished was truly their own. It would be a good way to handle a historical but not magical game.
