So the Chapters book chain is starting to close down here and this month they are having a big sale to clear out their inventory. Oh ... God it makes me so unhappy when bookstores close... I don't much care for e-books.... never have and never will. Anyway that's neither here no there. xD

I need some suggestions for books/series to look into. Please and thank you!

I really like fantasy, love it. Some futuristic settings are fine, ancient settings (specially in Egypt) are also acceptable. Mystery/Suspense is also another awesome genre I recently started enjoying. And well anything that's action packed, funny, or hell even heartbreaking. (Just nothing over the top mushy)

Though I tend to be picky with books I will give anything a read. I already know about Game of Thrones, Hunger Games and about 90% of the series/novels out there that have become main stream and popular. So yeah anything not based around those or any other books by those authors is welcome. Thank you for your help.

I know it's last minute... I need to stop putting things off.

I hate to bother you guys but maybe you have some suggestions? I may end up going back there before the month is over if I get some book suggestions late.

I would like to say how alike we are book wise. I much prefer a real book in my hand too. Not to mention I was absolutely crushed when the books a million closed here. Driving past the building literally kills me sometimes. Total weirdo.

Anyways I'll have to think on this. I've read some really great books as of late. Do you have interest in vampires by chance ?

Yeah the one place I went to often "World's Biggest Bookstore" closed down in February. Oh man it broke my heart... I loved that place, I spent HOURS looking for books there. Just really sucks.

Hmm as long as they aren't like the 'vampires' from Twilight -shudders- then I am alright with them.

The only other ones I have around here are barnes and Noble and a cute hole in the wall place called the book rack. However there is this absolutely amazing place 4 hours from here called the book exchange . Omg it's incredible .

It's not actually. I picked it up at the Thrift store one day and it turns out it's pretty good and a series. It's by laurell k hamilton. The anita blake vampire hunter series.

Ah.... I tried reading her books. I don't like her characters all that much. A friend of mine I knew had the series and I tried getting into it but the writing style kinda just seemed lackluster at best. Not bad mind you... but just didn't hold my interest. But thank you for the suggestion.

I don't know any other bookstores... there was one at the local mall but it closed down a few years ago... just out of the blue.

Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. There's forty something books in the series, and since the majority of them are unrelated to the other ones, you can basically jump in anywhere. (they all [I think] take place on the same world.)

I'm only on the third book right now, and I love them. My brother has read all of them, and he loves all except like, the most current one or two.

They are fantasy.

I'll throw in a vote for my favorite set, Scott Lynch's Lies of Locke Lamora and the rest of the Gentleman Bastard's series. It's usually described as Ocean's Eleven in a high fantasy setting. I love comedy in my fantasy novels, and these always deliver for me. Plus I've learned to love the characters to death.

I also enjoyed Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone. POC female protagonist, fantasy steampunk setting, god killing, god saving, and no romance between the female and male leads. It's also got an interesting take on vampires being used like drug dispensers. Wasn't as big of a fan of its sequel.

Aaand I just finished reading The Whitefire Crossing yesterday. It's a fantasy road trip/cat and mouse game of sorts through the mountains. The villains in this one didn't deliver as well as the books above, but the protagonists were always pretty logical, I never found myself beating my head against the wall.

You might like Elfhame by Ray Veen. Youth fantasy, with multiple worlds, it's a journey/escape type book.

If you like Sci/Fi I would absolutely recommend the series I've been reading. Its called Dune by Frank Herbert. It's incredibly in depth and just amazing.

Another series I adore is the Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss. That series just ... wow. I haven't enjoyed a fantasy book in a very long time. The third and final book hasn't been released yet, but the first two are wonderful. Hopefully the last one lives up to the high standards, I'm dying to know how he finishes it up!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you've probably read the Divergent series by Veronica Roth, but if not, I think you'd really enjoy it! :)

Hollow Earth by John and Carole E. Barrowman is good, too. It's really different, and it's like younger teen fiction, but it's really really fun.

The Wicked books (Wicked, Son of a Witch, and a third whose title I don't remember) by Gregory Maguire are really fun!

If I think of any more, I'll let you know! <3

Actually I haven't and to be honest I'm not inclined to read it. xD I just don't like the concept.

But the other books sound interesting, thank you I'll look for them next time I go book hunting.

I know what you mean. For me, I don't like the dystopian genre as a whole, and I hated other similar series (like the Hunger Games books), but for some reason this series really held my interest. I'm calling it a fluke haha.

Good luck finding something that suits your fancy! :)

Oh yes, I second the vote for Discworld! Love those books so much. The Color of Magic, Mort, or Guards! Guards! are all good starting places imo, although you can't go too far wrong jumping in anywhere really.

Some of my other favorite authors are Meghan Whalen Turner, Robin Hobb, Tamora Pierce, and Patricia C. Wrede. All of them have some fantastic books with really great characters. Sharon Shinn's Twelve Houses series is pretty good too and worth giving a try.

There's a book that you can find on Amazon called A Dark Apotheosis, by B.T. Hawley. I read it and I think it was amazing. The Mindjack Trilogy by Susan Kaye Quinn was pretty good. So is The Looking Glass Wars series by Frank Beddor, and pretty much anything by Neil Gaiman or Gregory Maguire.
