I really don't understand what's wrong with people now a days. How can this book be considered a best seller?? People have the intellectual mind and reading level of 5th graders, seriously.

Part of me wants to read it just so I can laugh and wonder why people enjoy, but the rest of me doesn't want to kill my brain cells so I think I probably won't end up reading it.

I read this whole series over my holiday while being stuck in airports/on the flights etc. I feel just...neutral about it. Because the whole book is just kind of neutral. Nothing really happens. The sex isn't /that/ BDSM. There's not really a plot.

I feel like I like it better than Twilight because some of the dialogue is at least amusing and the characters have personality even if they are fucking insane. But yeah, not worth the read unless you want to read the same sex scene like every five pages and lots and LOTS of monologue of how much she loves him, oh god those were painful.

Lmao I feel the same way about it. Just finished the first book yesterday and have started up the second book. It's not as bad as Twilight (however, it's incredibly obvious how it was originally a fanfiction of it). The writing is hilarious though. Deliciously clenching muscles, all that "inner goddess" shit, the MURMURING. And if you wanna play a drinking game, take a shot for each time Ana says "...oh my."

Disappointed in how the BDSM culture is presented, though. And then it just ends up regular sex most of the time anyway because Ana is a pussy and Christian is like "I CAN'T BEAR TO YOU LEAVE YOU MY MYSTERIOUS BEAUTIFUL ANA THOSE FIVE DAYS WE WERE BROKEN UP WAS THE WORST TIME OF MY LIFE I WILL CHANGE MY WAYS". Oh well.

I'm going to read it one day that's for sure. From what I've seen so far it has to be one of the worst books ever and I don't want to miss out on that.

A part of me is overjoyed that this book has come out because making fun of Twilight was getting old, but at the same time making fun of dumb books is getting kind of boring. At this point it just reminds me of The Feminine Mystique, and all those bored, unfulfilled 50s housewives who have been taught their entire lives that they can only achieve fulfillment from sex and children and then find that those things alone cannot bring you full satisfaction with your life, so, in desperation, turn to fantasy.

Actually, 50 shades of gray was originality a fan fiction of Twilight. She couldn't sell it so she switched up a few characters. So of coarse it sounds like twilight, it was!

I don't see why it's getting this much attention. It was basically a Twilight fanfiction until just recently. And I have no idea how all these middle-aged women began reading it and why they're becoming crazed over it (just like those girls in love with Twilight).

I read the first two and wanted to read the third but my heartily pirated copy of the books (like hell I was going to PAY to read it) had formatting errors in the third that made it impossible to read. I don't mind bad romance novels, I have shelves of bad romance novels that I enjoy because they are formulaic and bad. But I can't say I've ever read a love letter to abusive relationships before and that's exactly what it was! I mean there was a kinky moment or two that got my heart beating a little bit faster in the first book but literally the premise is: "BDSM is wrong. Grey is into BDSM because he was sexually abused in his youth, all people into BDSM are mentally ill and wrong. Also you are not a desirable woman unless you submit fully to your man and Lord help you if you don't. He will punish you but it's okay because he's mentally ill. Did I mention being filthy rich makes everything ok?" It dissolves into increasingly more and more vanilla sex from there until literally I was bored.

There's just so much wrong with everything about it that I get angry first and then very sad? Sad that people are going to have this opinion of something, that this is what they think BDSM is (it's not), and that they have to turn to something this bad to get their jollies. I mean, imagine how lonely and needy you have to be to think that this badly written abusive relationship is something that you want in your life! Breaks my heart.

Me and a friend got it so we could see how awful it was, and it got boring pretty quick, I love reading badly written books, I seem to get a kick off them. But jeez, this wasn't even funny bad ( or at least we didn't get there yet!) When I heard it out sold Harry Potter It made me want to weep. I may hate Twilight, But I could get why lots of girls would love it, but this...this! I don't get it, I sat and tried to think of the best reason why a bunch of old bored housewife's would collectively get together to bring this blight on literature, and claim how great it is, how romantic and sweet and lovely Christen Grey is I don't...I just don't! it's just a boring washed up twilight fanfic.

I have a co-worker who loved this book. Seriously loved it, thinks Christian Grey is the perfect man, etc etc. So I decided to read it (would have read it either way just to see what all the fuss is about) and cannot fathom why some women I know would want a man like that. That's all I'm going to say about that. But when it comes to how much I actually enjoyed the book, it was mediocre. There were plenty of parts that had me rolling my eyes, and even a few (or at least one) that were just plain disgusting.

My mom made me laugh when she talked about "that one extremely popular novel lately" because she had no idea what the book was. I asked her if it were titled "Fifty Shades of Gray," to which she responded, "Yeah, that one!" To this, I rolled my eyes and said, "It's porn. Badly written porn." Have I read the novels in full? No. I haven't the time to spare on pointless porn that spun off from a Twilight fanfiction. However, I DID listen to a rather DRUNKEN dramatic reading on Youtube, and it was absolutely hilarious.

At the camp I went to a couple weeks ago, every single girl was reading it. I have the book on hold at the library, but from the few sentences I read, I think I should cancel it. I read fanfiction much better than that.

I've gotten about half-way through the first book, and it's just sitting there now. I got it because: A) My fiancé's co-worker told him that I MUST read it. B) The entire trilogy was less than $20.

It's ... it's horrible. Nobody mentioned that it was first person, so when I got it I nearly tore it to pieces just because of that. I hate first person, it always makes me feel like the book is telling me "IF YOU WERE IN THIS SITUATION, THIS IS THE SHIT YOU'D DO!" all in caps, just like that. It pisses me off, but I attempted to read it.

But, all of her "tee hee, I feel funny down there" Dear god lady! At least call it something! A vajayjay, snatch, cootch, even vagina would be better than "down there". Seriously, that book makes me so angry. The only way I even got as far as I did was because I read it like I would read bad fanfiction. I had absolutely no good expectations for the book.

To be honest the only thing that bothers me about this book is that it's another abusive relationship that's romanticized. I am so sick and tired of reading the same old "he doesn't MEAN to hurt me! He has a troubled past!" storyline. The fact that women now think that someone who micromanages your life and makes you terrified of saying the wrong thing is so sad.

Fun fact: it started as a Twilight fanfic, that's why it reads like Twilight.

... I'm personally never planning to read it. What excerpts I've seen make my head hurt.
