It's such a shame that people view cults as scary. I mean, I get it. Some cults can be pretty intimidating from the outside. I went through quite a few cults before Menagerie. But I gotta say, it's all thanks to going through those cults that I met my very best friends here ❤
Also regarding applications, as an admin of a cult that using applications, it's just to be sure that people won't just join then never take part in cult activities. It sucks when people join then never talk or do things with the other members :c
If you make a laid back HA cult, I would be all over that. I never make fancy or stylish HA's because I like them to reflect my personality instead of some imaginary "standard". And, to be honest, I wear crap like what's on my HA right now everyday in real life because I'm just so darn lazy. haha
So if you decide to make a cult, hit me up. c:
Cults are fun if you are interested in becoming active and involved with the people. Otherwise they're not really a point.
I'm pretty much the same - cults seem super intimidating so I've never really made an effort. It'd be lovely just to be able to chat with people though (and talk HAs, they are my FAVOURITE :D ) I don't know, I've always found it quite hard to make friends on subeta, the vast majority of my friends on here I knew from elsewhere! Would love some more subeta friends :)
If you're working on a casual HA cult, feel free to hit me up when it's done. I feel like everyone else on the site is swimming in a bunch of custom wearables and I'm not at that point yet, haha.
Not nearly done, but: http://subeta.net/forums/view/923327/1#23529620

Hullo and guys in the chat c: I randomly dropped by because I was looking for something else xP Well, my cult is friendly and active. There's not much pressure. We have activities on certain times, like summer contests, secret santas, themed avatar contests, and we have an active forum over the regular forums- you could check us out, drop us any kind of questions over here http://subeta.net/forums/view/832840/1 I am not even very chatty! but I love these guys! community is a big part of the subeta experience! you need friends in order to exchange gifts, hexes and tokens, kisses and flowers. A cult is a nice idea ;D
[edit] Excuse the silly clothing, I am actually wearing the stuff I got on my Luminaire tree xD

I'm a member of menagerie as well and I found the cult to be pretty friendly considering prior to joining menagerie I had never actually joined a cult before. I just decided to randomly join because they were accepting open applications recently, and got in. That said, I also found the application process intimidating in the past, thinking that I didn't have what it took application wise to get in, but randomly decided to give it a shot after talking to some of the members via the chat thread they had in cults and was actually somewhat surprised when I got in. I had initially though that my application wouldn't be considered good enough or pet intensive enough to get in.
As for the friends aspect, I've found the members to be incredibly friendly, and while it is true I did know some of the members prior to joining, via talking to them occasionally on the forums and or the shout box in general, they weren't people I knew very well other than in passing. That said, I think that in general, if one is forum shy or not as social that cults can be a good way to make friends as the cult itself, in many respects, becomes your family because of similar interests and likes, dislikes... etc..
The application process does seem intimidating, I remember initially being wary about joining a cult because I was afraid that I wouldn't pass the application process, but once I actually did write out an application it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.
I poked at the cults briefly and just...not sure if I'll try to join one. Still new, so I'm guessing they're just clubs of sorts where people with similar likes can hang out together. Seems alright, but it may not be my cup of tea. If I could find a decent Transformers one, maybe.
