I'm really confused aboutbthe scoring. how are people getting 9,000+ in scores? Or are those from the old game? Because my hughest is only 2,000 something and I just can't figure out how to make it any higher. Maybe I'm just useless at this game. 😂

I like it, btw. It's an easy click/place game and I'm sure once I figure out the scoring I'll have better luck. (Yes, I've read the scoring page.) I really like the new borders that make types clearer and the Wild Card image.

A few things I've noticed, some are the are the same as others: 'New High Score' every game, even when lower than previous scores, 'Tiles' button on High Score page doesn't do anything and the 'Zentu' image isn't showing. The tile borders show, but it just says 'Zentu' inside without an inage.

I'm glad my feedback can be useful! :)

I do see the other scoring options and I do agree that they could make the game a bit more interesting. But I just want to reiterate - your ability to score points in the game is based on the luck of what tiles appear for you to play. If you do not get lucky and get the tiles you need to score the points that make the game fun, then what is making the game fun? Especially if it (probably inevitably?) becomes something like "this method of playing tiles will get you the most points so it's not worth playing any other tile types" - then, if you do not get those tiles, you're not getting all the points you know you could and that doesn't feel good.

I think the core of that is something I lightly touched on in my last post: the simplification of the matching in this game vs the original. Because you are only matching species or border, your only choices are: do I change the species or do I change the border or do I keep them the same? And, for the same reason I just mentioned above (one scoring method will probably end up being superior), that choice becomes fairly minimized in the game if you want to "do well." Whereas, with the original game, where to place a tile does not feel so obvious: if you have a red/pink and a red/blue tile on the board and you have a red/brown tile to play - which red tile do you place it on top of? Because there's way more variety in the game, you have less ability to predict what tile will come next and so you can't clearly see one way as the "correct" option. I know adding points complicates the whole thing & makes the two games less comparable, but I do feel like that's what is making the new game feel more repetitive than the old one when ultimately they are both simple matching games.

The achievements for the new game mostly seem good except for Perfect Game; that may be exactly what I was worried about (achievement earned through pure luck) but at the same time I don't even know how you would get it? What is a "mistake" in this game?

As far as getting all 3 tiles at the end of the game goes, I'm not really sure if that's better or not. On the one hand, it would make an extremely large collection less daunting to complete. But on the other hand, it might make it feel too easy to get tiles?

A thought for making the collection not appear so repetitive would be to only show the 128 species once and just have a toggle/buttons to switch to the different border types. (If that's not overly complicated to achieve, hopefully!) My thought is that there could be buttons under each species that you could click to switch the border on that particular species & show if you have it unlocked or not. The master toggles could also still exist so that you could quickly switch all the species to whichever border type, as well - that way, people could still easily get the satisfaction of seeing that they collected all of one tile type.

Some Quick Mockups Default view of all species with wooden frames, with buttons under them for other frame types: Click on a button to view that species in a particular border - in this case, the stone clawsion: You can also still click on the border toggle to switch all borders at once - here, to stone: (After making these, I realized it might also be nice to have a counter per border type somewhere instead of only the total.)

I do think that getting something out of collecting tiles would be the best way to make it actually desirable to do. And if the collection is going to be ballooning into the thousands with all these different tile types, then it would be probably be preferable to get prizes for things other than just collecting them all - such as getting a prize for collecting all of one border style. There's also the option to add prizes for more unique sets, like getting a prize if you collect all the feline species or something along those lines. Some prize ideas:

  • Avatar borders that match the in-game borders - collect all the metal tiles to get a metal avatar border, etc.
  • Get a small set of prize items after collecting certain sets of tiles (similar to how the bobblehead collection gives a set of items for 2010 & a set for 2012) - this could just be all of a border type or something more unique
  • Possibly some sort of in-game prize? [ul]
  • If this were to be something that actually affected gameplay, I don't really have concrete ideas but it would definitely become a question of balance.
  • Alternatively, this could be just a cosmetic prize:[ul]
  • Maybe collect all of one species and now you can select a different color of that species to appear in game? I.e. instead of common, now all the ontras appear as spectrum in the game
  • The original game counts in symbols (star > moon > sun) - maybe that could be implemented in this game and then you could unlock different symbols? That sounds really lame when I type it out haha, but it's like the most minimal version of unlocking a new "skin" for the game.
[/ul]
  • The lore is that this game was discovered in an ancient digsite. Another thing that was found in an ancient digsite is the bhakoru - which haven't been possible to create for many years. Maybe you could unlock the ability to create bhakorus through this game?
    • A similar, very art-intensive idea: a commonly requested new color is ancient/prehistoric. If a color like that were to be created, it could somehow be obtained from this game
  • [/ul] Speaking of the star/moon/sun thing in the original game - neither game is particularly fancy, so to say. But the original does seem to lean into the "ancient game" aesthetic a little more, with the sort of carved stone looking top & bottoms for the pillars and the unique counting method. This game is just using the same styling as the rest of the site, so it doesn't really stand out aside from the border styles. Possibly both from a coding/accessibility & art perspective it's not possible to do much more styling, but still maybe something to consider?

I also wanted to do a full rundown of how scoring seems to be working at the moment, based on the values given on the "help" page in the game, since it doesn't seem to be working as intended/implied.

    • Species match: 25 points (in game = "+25 Species Match")[ul]
    • This is working - when a species is placed on top of the same species, it does always seem to give 25 points.
    • But there is also a secondary set of points awarded for chaining species that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the scoring - 10 points per matching species placed in a row (in game = "+20 Species Chain x2" etc.)
  • Wild tile: 1 point (in game = nothing appears in the scoring area for wilds)
    • Not working - wilds give 0 points.
    • Also, due to the issues that will be discussed below, tiles place on top of a wild also give 0 points.
  • New pillar: 10 points (in game = "+10 First Tile in Pillar")
    • This works for wood, stone, and metal tiles.
    • But, if the first tile is a wild, this does not work - nothing appears in the scoring area and you get 0 points.
    • Note that when starting a pillar, you only ever get the 10 new pillar points - no points from tile types.
  • Wooden: 10 points + 10 for matching (in game = "+10 Wooden Base" & "+10 Wooden Match Bonus")
    • The bonus for matching wooden tiles always seems to work.
    • However the base 10 points are only awarded when the wooden tile is placed on top of another wooden tile. So, placing a wooden tile as the first in the pillar or placing a wooden tile on top of a stone, metal, or wild tile does not give you the "+10 Wooden Base" points (nothing appears in the scoring area.)
  • Stone: 15 points + 25 for first/last position (in game = "+15 Stone Base" & "+25 Last Position Bonus ")
    • As above, the base 15 points are only awarded when the stone tile is placed on top of a stone tile. So, placing a stone tile as the first in the pillar or placing a stone tile on top of a wooden, metal, or wild tile does not give you the "+15 Stone Base" points (nothing appears in the scoring area.)
    • Placing a stone tile first is not working - it does not award 25 points and you only ever get the "+10 First Tile in Pillar," with nothing else appearing in the scoring area.
    • Placing a stone tile last only awards bonus points when it is place on top of a stone tile. If the second-to-last tile is wooden, metal, or a wild, you do not get the "+25 Last Position Bonus" points (nothing appears in the scoring area.)
  • Metal: 15 points for each metal in column (in game = " +0 Metal Base" & "+30 Metal Column Bonus (2 metals)", etc)
    • This is only partly working - a metal tile placed on top of another metal tile will give a score equal to 15 times however many metals are in the pillar
    • But a metal tile not placed on top of another metal tile does not give any points (nothing appears in the scoring area) - this can be the first tile in a pillar or a tile place on top of a wood, stone, or wild tile.
    • Placing a metal tile on top of another metal tile also always shows a " +0 Metal Base" score - technically correct but probably shouldn't be listed.
  • [/ul]
Metal Scoring To demonstrate metal not working properly, here's some examples of using metal in a single pillar in during games: Move 1 = 10 +10 First Tile in Pillar (wooden magnus) Move 2 = 55 +25 Species Match +20 Species Chain x2 (metal magnus) Move 3 = 110 +25 Species Match +30 Species Chain x3 (wooden magnus) Move 4 = 175 +25 Species Match +40 Species Chain x4 (metal magnus) Move 5 = 250 +25 Species Match +50 Species Chain x5 (wooden magnus) Move 6 = 335 +25 Species Match +60 Species Chain x6 (metal magnus) Move 7 = 430 +25 Species Match +70 Species Chain x7 (stone magnus) Move 8 = 535 +25 Species Match +80 Species Chain x8 (metal magnus)
    Move 1 = 10 +10 First Tile in Pillar (metal pherret) Move 2 = 55 +25 Species Match +20 Species Chain x2 (stone pherret) Move 3 = 110 +25 Species Match +30 Species Chain x3 (metal pherret) Move 4 = 250 +25 Species Match +0 Metal Base +45 Metal Column Bonus (3 metals) +40 Species Chain x4 +30 Style Chain x2 (metal pherret) Move 5 = 325 +25 Species Match +50 Species Chain x5 (wooden pherret) Move 6 = 410 +25 Species Match +60 Species Chain x6 (metal pherret) Move 7 = 515 +0 Metal Base +75 Metal Column Bonus (5 metals) +30 Style Chain x2 (metal torrent) Move 8 = 560 +25 Species Match +20 Species Chain x2 (stone torrent)
    • Lastly, you get 15 points per tile for placing the same type of tile style on top of one another that does not seem to be listed in the scoring. (in game = "+30 Style Chain x2 ", etc.) This occurs for wooden, stone, and metal tiles but not for wilds.
As a few people have mentioned, the zentu image isn't working - that's because because they have two common images; there is no "zentu.png" instead there's "zentu_day.png" and "zentu_night.png."

Good ideas all around! I love the idea of tying in the Bhakoru!

I've also made some changes to the tile scoring issues by making the following changes:

    Wild Tile Scoring

    • Wild tiles now give 1 point as expected
    • Tiles placed on top of wild tiles now receive proper style points

    First Tile in Pillar

    • Maintained the 10 points for first tile in pillar
    • Fixed handling for wild tiles as first tile

    Wooden Tiles

    • Fixed the base 10 points to work regardless of what tile it's placed on
    • Maintained the 10 point matching bonus

Stone Tiles Fixed the base 15 points to work regardless of what tile it's placed on Fixed the 25 point first/last position bonus

    Metal Tiles

    • Fixed to give 15 points per metal in column regardless of what tile it's placed on
    • Removed the confusing "+0 Metal Base" display

And I updated the scoring guide in the game to hopefully be less confusing. I also really appreciate the collection mockup, that's a great idea. And that achievement is a lot simpler, it just means not trying to put a tile on a column you can't make a move on - or making a 'mistake'. Pretty easy to avoid, especially now that the tile types are more clear.

All right, I also just pushed up some changes to the collection page, to make it so that it's all of the species (order abc).

And I made a somewhat large change to the way that the game works -- I'm curious what you think. Instead of the tray being pulled randomly from the options available to the game style, there is a pre-determined deck. If you click into 'remaining tiles' you'll see:

Remaining Tiles: 106 Wild Tiles: 5 By Style:

    wooden 44
    stone 33
    metal 24

    By Species:

    Kanis 27
    Kumos 23
    Harvester 18
    Charlie 17

Hopefully giving you more information on what is available if you shuffle, and as we add more heavily weighted style types (e.g. a ruby tile, even in the gem mode, might only be 10% of the tiles) what you might get.

All right, I've also just pushed up a few new game modes, that all use the same tiles but change the scoring system in some way. Some good examples of the values I could play around with in a weekly generated mode that plays with them in some way!

    • I think there should be an "add to collection" button that you click after choosing a tile at the end of each game.
    • The stacking pillars need to be "active" differently because I accidently put a tile on the wrong pillar. The pillars overlap eachother ATM making it easy to make mistakes.
    • The collection is better!!! Having all the species listed in alphabetical order is great! Having the different collection buttons under each species all lit up if you have collected a wooder, stone, or metal frame tile for that species is also a great idea. However, it is a little confusing when the species is lit up if you have the wooden frame tile, and only for the wooden frame. Maybe the species tile, without a frame, only if you have collected all three tiles for that species can be lit up. I like how the W, M, and/or S is lit up under the species if you have obtained that tile.
    • Are there gonna be prizes for completing a collection?
    • I'm not recieving the tiles I have selected at the end of the two games I have played, so far.
    • I like how there is information boxes about the game while you are playing to remind you how to play the round you have chosen. It's easy to forget specific rules of each mode while you are playing.

hey , I completed two more games, claimed all the tiles, but they still haven’t been added to my collection.

also not sure if you’ve seen how buggy it is on mobile? The style frames are much smaller than the pet image, plus the image for Zentu is broken.

I'm getting a lot of end games only a few tiles in, the High Score list doesn't seem to update accurately or some of my scores were inaccurate?

I know the site is new, but it's furstrating to get the blackout screen, refresh and have game over, I don't like having a game over no where near the end of the game, and if we're playing tiles like the old version, I'd like to see the sun/star/moon icons change.

I've just tried out the basic one and it seems my kind of thing :B Sadly is goes super super slow for me, I have to wait a few seconds after clicking the mini tile and a few seconds after putting the tile on the top of the pile. Also when I won no new tiles are on my collection T0T butI've seen this last one is a global issue.
