Is there a default border that you would prefer?
It's much easier to plan for spacing (especially on mobile, where the avatars condense to the circle versions) with the whole space being used, so I'd prefer for all avatars to be bordered, if possible.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone, I'll add a blank state to my todo list. Although it'll still add an invisible padding / border around the avatar, they'll line up with other avatars that are using borders.
I'll also see about getting some basic / thin borders that are either default (now that we have that functionality, I built it for the reactions) or easy to earn.
