- I would have argued that until the death of Angeline. Up until that point Vida exuded common childhood cheerfulness, the cheerfulness of someone who hadn't seen all of life's disasters yet. After Angeline's death, I agree with you. It really does try, and succeed, at being both. This bbook certainly does make you think about a lot of core subjects, for instance man vs man and man vs environment. . :D

it's very tricky to get the right spellings of names when you're listening to an audiobook! it's V I T A and A N G E L I E N but your spellings are probably what I would've guessed from the audio, too. And I agree, Angelien's death was very much a turning point where what had been a very lite sort of grimness (the starving kids, mostly) really began to impact the viewpoint character & the narrative mood itself. There's two more points where I would say the grimness ratchets up yet again - one is the part with Claretta and Lark; the other is the aftermath of the climax of Sky's plan with all the metal, and especially of Vita's situation when she meets Jelisaveta (that's another one that'll be tricky for you to spell!)
