I made it a point to read one book a day to my main pet to increase AP. The books got expensive pretty quickly. Recently I started using tomes on my pet after it reached Tier 13. My AP has really taken off from tomes. There are boosters you can use to increase intel, but it seems to be all around cheaper to just use tomes.
