: Hi there ! Things are going just fine. The pups are growing strong and will soon be able to explore outside once the weather warms up a bit.I got some news I wanted to share with the rest of the family about my Author, so your query is well timed.

Back in the early part of December, my Author Mark had an incident where he became progressively short of breath, his ankles became swollen and his heartbeat became much more rapid than usual. He saw his primary doctor the next day, who ordered a battery of lab tests and ECG. The only lab value out of order was protein in his urine, usually an indicator of acute kidney injury. Mark's primary referred him to a cardiologist at that point and we have been waiting to see the results of all the tests he had been put through over the last month and a half.

So, after the Echocardiogram, the nuclear imaging, the stress test, the Heartbeat Calcium cat scan and another series of blood tests...everything came back normal.

What caused his serious episode of dyspnea, swelling, rapid heartbeat? The protein is the only clue and the best guess is that mark was over-utilizing NSAIDS for his joints and muscle pain he was suffering from whilst he was hanging sheet-rock wallboard in his house. Specifically, Voltarern, a brand of diclofenac paste he was putting on his paws for his finger joint pain. Diclofenac overdose can cause acute kidney injury, which would cause the kidneys to temporarily fail, causing fluid retention and back up into the heart and lungs. It's serious, but if caught early, reversable. Mark suspected that this was the reason the night that he was having the most trouble breathing and immediately ceased all NSAIDs. Consequently, none of those symptons ever returned.

Don't get me wrong, or overreact to this tale. NSAIDS, used appropriately are safe, Ibuprofin is very well tolerated. But taking more than recommended, without a Dr.s approval isn't wise. Doing what Mark did, using 2-3 different NSAIDS concurrently in larger doses (and in the case of the diclofenac paste, not measuring the dose carefully), CAN lead to problems.

Thank goodness, nothing terrible happened, but it is a warning shot across the bow. I threatened to bite him on his rump if he wasn't more carefull. I did dope slap him a bit because he really is smarter than that, he was just being careless. But then I gave him a kiss on the cheek and (I cried a little), I gave him a hug thankful that he is OK.

- so glad Mark is okay and that the mystery was solved. Please tell him he needs to give you plenty of cookies to make up for scaring you like that.
