I totally get how difficult it is to try and narrow and pin down the kind of specialization you want to do! So much I was told to "be specific but not too specific" like, okay thanks lol. I'm not sure how that part of the medical field works, but if you can find someone who is kind of doing the research you're into, but then you find out maybe you want something a little different, you can still work with that person! The person is supposed to be your mentor, so you can branch out into something they may not be specifically working on (at least that's how it's seen in my field). It's definitely hard when there's a bunch of things you like, so it's good you're also thinking about the logistics of what is and isn't feasible as a sustainable career. Try getting in touch with any instructors you've befriended throughout your undergrad; often times they know someone and can be a good reference!

Oh, dude, I’m planning on applying to Psi Chi (psych honor society, nationally recognized, idk if your major has anything sorta similar) once I get my GPA back up (retaking criminal law in the fall since I royally screwed it up last fall and it tanked my GPA) and I’m hoping that’ll help me a lot with the networking part of undergrad since I tend to be pretty shy and independent so I haven’t had a ton of luck making friends tbh. Plus I’m quite a bit older than most of the other on-campus students (I’ll be 29 this year holy moly) so approaching anyone has been tough lol but all of my remaining classes are psych-adjacent and in-person so I’m hoping that’ll help me out a bit. Have you had any luck with making friends in your major?

funnily enough, I also am very shy and very bad at making friends lol. My only like, real friend is my boyfriend who we did actually meet through an ecology course back in undergrad. It's certainly easier for me to chat up instructors and befriend them, go to their office hours, and such. My major was really small, I think we had like 12 graduates my year, so it makes it difficult if you don't really click with anybody. I've gotten a lot better though working with my therapist and psychiatrist so I'm hoping I can do a better job making my own friends when I go to grad school instead of relying on my boyfriend's friends. It does make me feel better knowing that he won't know anyone there either (he has a lot of friends in the area bc I work at the university we went to, so most of his college friends are still kinda close). One of the things I've been trying to work on is being more assertive and out-going and I guess the move will really give me the opportunity to do that. I'm really really nervous but excited as well.

I feel like age matters a lot less in graduate school. I took about 4 years before applying to grad school. There are definitely gonna be people in my cohort that came directly from undergrad, but I'm hoping some of the other people also took some time like me. The most important step you can take is the next one, so as long as you're moving forward you're doing a great job :)

Our psych program is one of the best ones in the state that’s not tied to one of the big, major universities, and it’s pretty affordable so we have a lot of psych majors here, but we have just as many who go to the aforementioned gigantic state university about an hour or so away for graduate school since they’re nationally recognized and located in a relatively large city, but dog, that price tag and the competitiveness of entry has me choking lol Like, I could never, I would be eaten alive by those guys. I definitely have made friends with. My partner’s friends as well, both online and off, but tbh I haven’t really made any efforts to form a close bond with them either since I didn’t want to piggyback off of his friends and infringe on his private spaces?? Which he’s never indicated is an issue at all but like I wanted him to have stuff that’s still just his even though we’ve been together for so long now. We met because of college too, he’s about to finish grad school himself and has hella degrees because of his work funding additional ones so like given time and more work experience the man’s earning power will be unbelievable which I’m hoping will let me get away with not needing a traditional job in graduate school. Not super likely, but one can hope, I’ve heard graduate programs can be really time intensive if you rock a full-time schedule and I’d like to keep my sanity and be able to work my clinical hours and internships and y’know. Still have time to sleep lol

Honestly, I’ve heard that too about age, though! That’s a great mindset to have though, trying to maintain a positive attitude during times like these can be really challenging so I’m glad to see that you’re so hopeful about this move and everything around it! I actually moved across the country in 2020 to get a fresh start and to come here for school all by myself which was probably the scariest thing I ever did?? Like the chances of something going horribly wrong were ridiculously high so I have no idea how I managed to pull that off and during a panny, no less, but here we are, nearly three years later, still kicking lol

I feel that about not wanting to encroach too much on your partner's friends. My bf's previous relationship had him lose a lot of friends because his ex befriended them while they were dating and them forbid them from ever talking to him again, it was wild. It can be difficult though, trying to fit in with "The Boys" (TM) because so often I'm the only other girl present/involved and my bf wants me to be more engaged with talking to people. It's a struggle.

What kind of degree are you going for? If you're doing a PhD then all your costs should be covered. Usually you have a stipend and you'll be a TA which allows you to work and usually covers tuition costs and such. I'm EXTREMELY lucky to have found a place that will still cover all my costs even though I'm just going for a master's. At least in the contract it says it'll pay for tuition costs, but I'm terrified hidden costs are gonna pop up lol. Not sure how the medical industry is. Granted I wouldn't be surprised if students were still made to pay out of pocket. My only experiences with the med industry, both as a worker and a patient, have been less than stellar. But hopefully that's just where I live! Here, the main med institute has a chokehold on the area and some of the hospitals are absolute shit but are the only option.

This is kind of embarrassing, but this is the first time I'll be moving more than an hour's drive away from my family... granted it only turned into 2.5-3 hours XD so still reasonably close, but it's the farthest I've ever been. And when I mean family, I mean my ENTIRE immediate family. both my parents and my sisters live in this area. My sisters are literally across the street from one another. I'm extremely blessed to have a close relationship with all members of my immediate family and while growing up was...difficult... they're making up for it now and have been super supportive. So it hurts moving away while all my family is still together. I'm glad I found out about being accepted as soon as I did to give me time to really process everything.

Tbh, I’m not sure how far I’ll go with it! I might wait until I’m older and have paid down or paid off my loans from the previous two degrees before I look at a PhD program, but I might be more interested in a PsyD route anyhow, since it’s less focused on research and more focused on practical application and clinical treatment. I suppose Psych Stats will tell me if or not I can pull off a research role lol I’ve heard of some programs offering things like that, but maybe it’s my own lack of confidence that’s keeping me from pursuing those, or maybe I’m just being realistic about my chances considering the competition for those very limited roles. Who even knows? XD

Honestly, that’s such a blessing, and having your parents close enough to help you if you get into trouble is such a life hack lol My parents aren’t together so my family is all over the place and I have a bajillion aunts and uncles and cousins but I’m all by my lonesome out here once my cousin moves away, they just graduated and are looking for work in their field which will probably mean relocating to a metropolitan area so I’ll be all by my onesie aside from my partner and his family. Not at all nervous about that lol Moving away from home was the single best decision I ever made though, I’ve grown so much just in the last three years, it’s insane.

I think only my mom is the one with hesitations about me moving further away, everyone else thinks it'll be good for me. I know it will be, it'll just take some time to get used to. I'm a slow grower lol
