for me, the technique that works best is moving pieces up and to the right (I pretty much smash these two keys until nothing moves anymore) and then left and right and only if nothing else works down. Down just messes everything up. of course in between I look out for easy "matches". I try to put my biggest number on the top right. That way I can reliably get to 512 relatively easy and fast. From there on you also need a bit of a good run to get all the way up but it is definitely doable. Good luck should you try again! :)
