Thank you! I'll change those the next time I clock in to work :)
For consistency's sake, we're going to keep them all changed. As I stated, the original submitter can create a ticket if they want to request a different name!
Amen, thank you for saying this. This is exactly the kind of change we want to see on Subeta. Thank you staff, Bug and Jessi especially, for all your hard work!
I don't wanna seem ungrateful but how come these items got fixed so fast, yet there is a thread of pending item issues (mainly fatphobia and sexism in ancient items) that are still around?
Do you have a link handy to this thread? I'd love to take a look at it :)
They were likely referring to this thread that was made last year when people started brining up some other items with these kinds of issues.
Yeah that was the thread I was talking about. I was thinking that even users could give suggestions of what the new descriptions could be, as a fun activity maybe. I had tons of ideas!
uh, It is interesting to know that the word oriental if spoken in Asia whether being referred to a person or not is not considered offensive at all. I cannot speak for everybody but being an Asian myself with oriental ancestry, the word oriental has never occurred to me as offensive. Maybe we are a little too woke?????
I think this confusion you feel comes from the differences in its usage in history. In Asia, it is a more neutral descriptive term but in the western world, 'oriental' is associated with a lot of historically negative and harmful stereotypes that are steeped in racism. Since this is a website based in North America, its usage carries this connotation and history with it. It's great you have never experienced the word 'oriental' used in a offensive manner; unfortunately, that is not the case for everyone everywhere. If you look at the first page of this thread, you can see someone who has experienced it in a racist manner. I don't think 'too woke' applies here because many people have had real negative experiences with this word in their normal daily life and sometimes it escalates to more than just words. Just this past year, racism and physical violence towards Asian Americans have risen so so much. Is it really being too woke if these things have actual negative, real life consequences on people's lives?
