My island hasn't changed much, even with the happy home designer items. The main change for me has been using the castle elements and revamping some of my villagers houses.

I like the villagers, but some of their houses were average

There's a pack of cooking recipes available from Nook's Cranny; make sure you've bought those. Also, you can't cook at a regular crafting table; you need a kitchen or stovetop item to cook at. The stonework kitchen that they added as a DIY is a good beginner one, and some existing kitchen furniture items were changed to be able to cook at, like the system kitchen and open-frame kitchen.

Thank you for the reply! :D I now can cook. I needed to unlock Terraforming and everything first after the K.K. Slider visit. :3 Now I'm looking to make more friends so I can visit more islands and have visitors. <3
