My experience has been purely about turnips. I've been welcomed tho and not everyone is crazy about trading or asking for incredible fees to sell turnips or visit their island (but in general - yes people are crazy about them). I usually try to stick to the same people / users in general!

Apologies for the delay, but I just wanted to say thank you again for letting me visit. Your island was gorgeous and it was so much fun to look around. I've got a little orchard going now thanks to your fruit C: I feel a bit cheeky asking but if you still have the gong DIY available, I would be happy to take that too for my Zen room. Wait, people are charging to visit islands, just to look around??? (is the discord server easy to find? I've joined the really big one, but smaller communities make me feel happier)

In general: I am currently building a park, so I have a bunch of spare DIY in there. If you visit, you are welcome to see if there is anything you don't have (I think I have about 12/13 recipes at the the moment, so not much but I am eager to repay the kindness). My island is not fancy but any means, but if you want to visit for Nook Miles achievements/for fun let me know.

haha, it's fun that they do that. I stopped buying turnips a while ago, kept missing the sales window and then my last batch rotted too. :'( If you bought turnips I can check my prices this week though, I don't check it much anymore.
