Walking along near your home, a place you know well, is a wall. It's probably never caught your attention before. There's weeds and the sidewalk isn't that great there. Maybe it's not a wall, but a fence or a weird bush... whatever it is, you've passed it a hundred times. Except this time, as you're walking toward it, you see a shimmer in the air. You look carefully, and there's three doors stuck on the wall! You know there's never been anything like that there before. Down an old stone hallway are FOUR doors, the writings and carvings rubbed smooth and hard to read with time and use.

Chest clearly has the word cat visible on it, surrounded by rounded swirls that could represent feline paws.

Chest has the word tern visible, inset among regular intersecting lines and carvings that could be flight paths.

Chest has dog amidst blockier shapes with rounded edges, perhaps as abstract representations of faithful hounds.

And Chest has asp visible in the coiled impressions with outward-facing points on its weathered front

Chest only contains one cat, I'm afraid, but the is happy to see you. You got what what you expected, so you are the WINNER!

You realize, as you open the chest, that you've been tricked! No birds here, the lines and rays were meant to suggest patTERNs and lanTERNs. Hopefully you'll find a use for the , , and anyway.

You also realize too late that the square shapes with rounded corners are DOG-eared representations of the the contents, including caDOGres. Enjoy your , , and instead!

rASPberry, vASPukin, clASP...sorry, no scaly friends in this chest. Round fruit with thorny vines for the , a cloud with jagged lightning striking out of it for the , and brooches with the points to hold onto garments for the , would all make sense though for the rounded-with-points pattern as well. You'll have to look elsewhere for actual sneks.

Past the chests lies a door of old wood and iron, worn smooth as river stones by the touch of countless hands. Pushing it open, you squint in the sudden dim lighting. Your eyes clear to reveal—books! Everywhere you look, spines of all shapes and colors line the shelves that firm the walls and winding corridors of this strange new place. Some glimmer in the edges of your vision with gilding that looks like real gold and silver, others lay unornamented but seem to wait to be held and read. Letting your gaze drift across the library, you catch sight of four books laid out on a desk, ready to be opened.

BOOK is a simple, sturdy-looking brown hardcover. An iron clasp holds it firmly closed, but there is no lock. The pages are rough and uneven between the covers. Block lettering in black marks a title, but it’s too small to read from where you stand. You swear that you’ve seen it somewhere before.

BOOK is a slim volume compared to the others. It’s cover is black, with no ornamentation or decoration—not even a title. Or maybe it does have a title, but in the same pitch hue as the cover—it’s impossible to tell without grasping the book in your hands.

BOOK is a fine emerald green. Leaves are etched in golden swirls along the spine, with a title in elegant, curling font to match. It’s the sort of lettering that is more finery than don’t, and even if you were closer you doubt you’d be able to read it easily. Staring at the book, for a moment you almost think you hear distant laughter.

BOOK is—is it even a book? There is no cover, simply a stack of papers at the edge of the desk. And so many! There must be thousands of pages, all piled haphazardly, covered in what could only be called scribbles. Your fingers itch as you stare, trying to puzzle out the purpose of the sheets, and there’s a pinched feeling behind your eyes.

Book 2, then.

, you pick up the book and, glancing around, find a comfortable chair to read in, with a simple little table next to it. You while away the rest of the afternoon reading it, getting lost in the story. When you put it down at the end, you sigh sadly—if only it were a little longer! Or part of a series? What will you do now? You move to put the book down at the table, and pause—where had that card come from? Why does it have your name on it? And why do you feel like YOU‘VE WON!?

, you open BOOK and jump back in startlement as two items fall out of the little black book. You receive:

The book itself, when you open it, is empty. There seems to be something cool and smooth on the fine parchment, but no matter what you do you can’t find a single word. Frustrated, you put the book down and run your hands over the cover. The golden swirls shift under your fingertips and your eyes widen. You find yourself pulling them free from the book, strands of filaments like golden hair hanging from your grasp. In your excitement some come loose brokenly, one or two somehow falling to powder in your hands. You gather it up greedily. Afterwards, you’ll find someone to combine the gold into something unique. You leave the book behind you, stripped bare, its contents and the odd laughter forgotten.

, you lean over the table and begin poring through the pages. They appear to be... charts? Yes, charts of all kinds, with scribbled notes in-between that might as well be in another language for how illegible the handwriting is. You shrug, and take a few of the more interesting-looking charts with you as you go.
