Ohh I think I know what it is. The hit boxes are rectangular, so I think when you see the 5-pixel blank space, it's probably the corner of the player box and the corner of the rock one hitting each other... Oh geez I'll see what I can do. The hit boxes are already as small as they can be as rectangles. But maybe I can find a way to make them circles or something for better accuracy >_<

And uh yeah, thanks for pointing that out, I didn't notice that. I will see what I can do about that!

Eh, if it's not something that can be fixed easily, it's alright. It's one of those odd system limitations that happen with games that aren't grid-bound. Annoying, but I think fixing it would probably cause more issues for everything else. :'D fwiw, Spectrail was always quirky in terms of hitboxes and deciding when you'd get a game over, even in the old Flash version.

That aside, I still appreciate you bringing the game back! ❤

[edit]So... here's an interesting thing I've noticed. Sometimes your character randomly decides to swerve slightly, even when you're not touching any keys. I'll see if I can grab a screenshot.

No screenshot yet, but I've noticed it tends to happen after you touch a colored block.

Glad to see Spectrail finally getting a facelift! I've noted what I found glitch-wise as well as my own opinion on a few aspects below.

See the Mallarcy's trail on the left. Are people calling this the push/drift glitch? I've found the reason this happens. Browser: Chrome Difficulty: Hard Occurs When: Occurs when you pick up a paint splotch and tap a directional arrow at the same time.

I hope the above glitch is fixable. I've smacked into my rainbow trails dozens of times trying to get paint out of a tricky corner.

I'm also convinced that the cloud hit boxes are bigger than they should be, but it could just be me. Considering this is a grid game I've always found it unfair that the clouds could spawn anywhere on the field regardless if they are perfectly in the grid or not. Trying to figure out where the line draws is frustrating, but I understand if the game is meant to be this way.

On another note, have the rainbows always been 500 points on hard? I feel like they used to be 300. It was a lot easier to break 1000 than I remembered. Maybe I'm just getting better o:

I haven't played Spectrail in a long time. I love the cute graphics. Works great on Opera. At least for me it did.

The game is even more glitchy for me and nearly impossible to play without reloading between sessions. "There was a problem starting a new game. You may be seeing this due to a poor internet connection. Please refresh the page and try again. If the problem persists, please make a bug report."

Oh, wow, what happened? Now it's lightning fast, haha. Those who are really good at it will be happy i think. The easy one has a good speed at which anyone can play without feeling it will take 5 hours. this is a big plus, thanks. The space between the tail-orbs is even bigger too, at least on medium, and on easy. That's a minus :(

I'm getting the same error but haven't managed to get a screenshot. I too am using Chrome and hard.

I'm on the top ten scores as well and the achievement has not unlocked for me either (it's been about an hour since I got the score I think).

Also having that drift problem!

Edit: Now I'm getting the notification "You receive 10,000 sP for having a high score this month in Spectrail!" But the achievement is still not unlocked.

it's been a long time since i've played Spectrail so i'm not sure if i'm accurate in saying this, but i feel like there is a bigger gap between the tail pieces, so it makes it a lot harder to play for a long time (esp when you gotta get 750 for the achievement, but i'm hitting my tail at 400)

[edit] lol i say this right before i get hella lucky and got the little rainbow prism and FINALLY GOT THE 750 ACHIEVEMENT

anyway my comment still stands. also have been noticing the weird swerve thing (right after you pick up a paint blob)

Hi, I'm back. Right now I am investigating:

  • Whether tail pieces need to be spaced closer together
  • The weird swerving issue
  • Whether it's possible for the game to work on Safari

I was able to find this very old video of gameplay, and to my naked eye it looks like the tail pieces are spaced about the same as they are now? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3oIYYkF69s

That said, I can experiment with the tail spacing either way. No reason to stick with how it used to be if it would be a total improvement!

Just did a fix for the High Scores achievement. It should trigger when you view the high scores page for Spectrail now :)

So uh, it's not exactly a grid game. You can only make sharp 90-degree turns, but the sprites aren't on a grid and actually can't be because the player sprite is much larger than each tail sprite. AFAIK it has always just kinda.. been like that.

The scoring is the same as the previous version of the game, so I guess you have just gotten better at it :D

Can you please provide your browser (including version), operating system (including version) and device (laptop? mobile phone? etc)

Makes sense! Most games of snake are on a grid so I attributed it to the game of snake rather than the game that is Spectrail, my bad!

If it helps I've been playing it a bit more, and the mallarchy jumped off track when I picked up a blob but was going straight (no arrow keys used) o: I couldn't screenshot it as it caught me off guard but I'll try and get one if it happens again for better understanding if you'd like!

EDIT: Managed to screenshot deviation going in a straight line. What triggers it is picking up a blob and/or a cloud spawning?

The game works so much smoother now, and I think the speeds for each level are appropriate! The one issue I'm having is that the hitboxes are really funky/inaccurate. It's kind of frustrating to die without visually bumping into something. I also think the hitboxes on the walls-o-death could stand to be a little more forgiving, just since the edges are uneven--maybe the hitboxes could be within the walls themselves?

Also, would it be possible to prevent the game from spawning a death blob right in front of/next to the player? That's happened to me a couple of times and it's pretty unfair.
