Mmh. The site is very laggy for me. Almost unplayable again like yesterday morning.
I have 14 pets that need name changes, YIKES!
What if any special characters are allowed in pet naming?
As mentioned, you are not required to change your pet names if you don't want to!
If the pet names haven't caused you problems, you can just keep them and not worry about it :)
We wanted to put a notice on the Pets page, so that even people who don't read the forums will know they don't have to pay for name changes for these pets if they want them.
The rules for pet names are described in the FAQ.

Ohhhhh. I didn't know you can't start a name with a period. All 18 of them start with a period. LOL. Well, if I can think of new names, I'll change them. For know, I'll leave them as is. I just don't like looking at that blue box on my pet page. XD

Regarding the naming thing, why is it listed as against the rules if you lot are completely allowing it?
I believe it's only against the rules in the sense that coding-wise it can cause certain things to break or not work as expected. It's not against the rules based on like profanity or anything. That's why they're allowed to stay, because they're not like bad or offensive names, so it's up to the user if they don't mind having to deal with the inconvenience of the name sometimes causing coding issues, or if they would rather get a free name change to avoid that.
No, I get that. My point is just that it's not really against the rules if it's allowed. If even the staff are openly stating that it's fine and there are no repercussions then it should be taken out of the rulebook entirely, especially now that there's a clear notice to let people know that their pet's names could break the site code.
~ Thank you for clarifying and the link. I use a period in front of most of my pets names. Not sure if I will change them at this point but if I do, do I file a separate ticket for each pet? Thanks!
