I know you're talking wearables, but you did say anything on-site..
I'm having my eyes opened to what is considered food due to the new "food pet is missing" feature. Some things I've dismissed as home goods items are actually foodstuffs, whoops.

I understand that it can be confusing but I have to say I quite enjoy that the item images are not always literal representations of what the wearable is. I think it allows for a better range of items to be available that aren't just clothes whilst still allowing for a lot of wearable items overall. I remember also in the past people complained that too many new item releases were wearables and other item categories were ignored. I think allowing for difference images helps to reduce this problem and provides more variety- for example the has been pointed out, I think its useful that it can be both a car or retro theme item used for a pet treasure or a gallery while also being a cool wearable that is versatile for many outfits.
