Uh, I would argue all the ways to unlock challengers are item related? The news post gives hints where Quentin mentions his ghost friends may join him to battle.

XD that is very true! I guess it could not be item-related in the future but they usually don’t repeat the exact same way to unlock a challenger

I tried playing Gravedigger and finding a few ghosts, didn't work.
All Fails
-Visiting them wearing a sword/shield/ghost one or other or all three... NO
-Visited them wearing something with Jaxon/Ian on ...NO
-Visited them wearing boxing gloves... NO
-Visited them with a book about using shields .... NO
-Visited them with a ghost item .... NO
more fails
battled with a ghost companion on my avatar, a ghost minion on my pet, and four ghost weapons at tier 1 and 2 (on the assumption that holding back and using small attacks was the hint)
