I don’t support this.

I’m really proud of the original names I have. I have the original Alexia, Iona etc. I don’t want there being 10 Alexias and 20 Ionas. That will really take the enjoyment of my pets away and then I might just leave entirely. I’ve fought [u]15 years[u] of lag and page crashes to get names I really wanted.

If we got a compensation of the original pet names we owned, It would probably only count for the ones we have now. For example, I was the owner of a lot of original names and many many more. how would that work (I also don’t care about pet IDs, so loosing them isn’t a huge issue)? :-:

Y'all I might actually come back and play Subeta again if I can get the pet names I want, omg? In the past I've had fun looking for "unusual" names for my characters so I could make them here, but I've gotten pretty tired of that system, especially when we're... arguably running out of unique ways to spell certain names, so. Yes. Please. i crave change

When it comes to the "hunt for a fitting name" and how that can serve as a point of inspiration... I guess personally, the thing I don't really quite understand about that being a point in favor of sticking only to unique names is that... like, if non-unique names become a thing, hunting for an untaken name is still very doable -- it just wouldn't be a requirement anymore? (And I guess it might also be a little less straightforward if the site were to have "clone" names be free to create rather than a rename sort of thing, since you'd probably have to go to the search feature to look for names, whereas if you had to do a rename to get a "clone" name I would imagine there'd be some kind of message when you went to try to create the pet... but yeah.) I mean I suppose it wouldn't be quite the same if it weren't a requirement, but it still seems like it would be doable to me, just not something you have to do. I am biased, though, because I've failed a few of those name hunts myself haha, and had to abandon some character ideas because I couldn't figure out a name that felt right.

Anyway, I'm eagerly waiting for this announcement. I'm anxious to find out if I'll need to continue hanging onto names that I'm uninspired for, out of fear of adopting them out and then eventually wishing I hadn't (which has happened to me a few times before!) I really want to get back into pets but this debate being ongoing had been making me hesitant to start, in case things changed and I ended up wanting to change some pet names I'm iffy on. Once we have a final decision and I no longer feel at a sort of standstill, I'll at least have a better idea of how to move forward and start working on my long-neglected pets again! Even with my occasional petname woes Subeta remains my favorite site for character display (I never really managed to get into any alternatives) and using this site to put together profiles and treasure chests has helped me a lot with character development in the past, so I'm really, really hoping that I'll be able to get back into it. I know that getting motivated for pets again would also greatly encourage me to start putting more money into the site as well, and I'd love an excuse to do that since I really do care about the site and want to see it around for longer -- I'm just almost entirely pet-focused, so it's hard for me to justify purchasing CSC when I'm not doing much with my pets at the moment. Anyway, fingers crossed!

yes i really do need more

This. I'm proud of the original names I have as well. It's just...it's a thing to strive for, and it's fun to find a name that isn't taken or figure out another name that could be used for a character. I would hate to see 500 Circe's and 500 Aragorn's and such. It would be really irritating and unoriginal.

I can see where some people are coming from when it comes to certain pet names. Names tied to fandoms ... now that can be a tricky thing because there's only so much one can do with a fanpet without veering off course and making it something so different that it's not even remotely cannon to the idea.

Yet... A LOT of names are tied to ideas that are unique to the individual. Either the name is linked to a real pet, a real child/friend/relative/etc. Everyone who may have wanted the name ... let's say Sara... could have that name and no two ideas may be alike? Yes as amazing as owning the original is... only one person owning that name feels kinda hollow. I've thought about this for a long time. Yes at one time I thought about not wanting to share names but then I tried to expand beyond that.... because there's so many names that I want and I'm tired of trying to find alternatives and even those alternatives are impossible because some of the names and even words are that heavily sought after.

I DON'T BLAME ANYONE for being apprehensive about this upcoming change (if it's still gonna happen) Some people don't want this change and that's fine, I can't change your minds and I don't want to try. We're all allowed to think and feel how we want and if this makes you sad or disappointed, that's how you feel and I'm sorry.

...I hope my post didn't come off too weird... I'm not very good at expressing myself.

So, having multiple Circe is not original, but having Circe_394 or Ciiirceh is? I don't get that argument.

Nobody is forcing you to get names that are already taken - we just want the site to move on from "If that user leaves, I can have their pet names :D" mentality and actually have the site perform well, without the clearings causing server stress.

Right! There are TONS of names available. I come across them everyday on abandoned accounts. Looking for a name, another spelling, another meaning (instead of saying ah man!! Strength is taken and boo-hoo) why can’t you find other alternatives like Strengthening? That name is available (If anyone wants that name it’s not taken. You’re welcome). It’s the in same category of strength.

I just wish everyone had the thinking I did

I’ve been wanting to quit for so long. I’ll have to see how this horrid name thing goes. It may be the tipping point for me. I’m already starting to clean my account and pets, as you know

What about people who want to make a fanpet for their dog Hermia, but who can't, because I got the name first, and am not planning to adopt her out. They don't want to call their fanpet something like Heeermia or X_Hermia_X or put digits and I cannot blame them. It's their memories!

Their solution is to hope that I go inactive and don't come back for a year.

This attitude does not allow the pet community to thrive, because pet names are a competition, rather than a work of collaboration. We're always secretly hoping that someone is gonna go inactive because hey, they have nice pet names.

This shouldn't be happening

That's the core of neopets tbh. But if I'm not mistaken neo doesn't allow a single user to have 100+ names so here we are.

Neopets, or the thriving modern era petsites.

Just hoping to actually hear news at some point about what the sites plan is. I'd like to know if I'm investing in this site or just logging in to ensure no one can have any of my petnames or not.

Ha! I had that thinking for the first 5 years of being on site. Now I don’t care because I could re-think my pets etc.

I only have one memorial pet and I love him. I don’t care if I couldn’t get his name 100%, so I added the sweet nickname behind it.

For example, if someone wants Hermia their beloved cat (when they might’ve had 18 cats before Hermia), why not go Hermia Baby or Sweet Hermia?

I just don’t get the point.

That’s how I feel. I love my names, but I’ve already started cleaning my account long time ago to get prepared for leaving

Because they might not refer to their beloved cat as "Hermia Baby" or "Sweet Hermia". These nicknames mean nothing to them, they don't hold any sentimental weight to them. They're just a crummy replacement, they're not the real thing. So to them, it doesn't mean the same.

My dog's called Molly - the name Molly has been taken for eons, and there isn't a substitute suitable for that name, because I only refer to my dog as Molly

Big Molly or Mollydog aren't think I use when I talk to her, or about her. Even if I could use these as a petname, they're meaningless. My dog is Molly, not Big Molly!

To each their own I guess. All of the nicknames my pets had, are very meaningful and still are. I’m not gonna make a memorial for each of them

I think this whole changing the name system is a very touchy thing for some ._. I’ve been here for 15 years. That’s a long time

I'm here for non-unique names, actually. I'm tired of hoarding names I will never use for anything. I would love to have my actual OC, and dogs, names and just be creative and have fun and burn money on renames and TC fodder (and the countless books I lapsed on, and the 11 battle pets training I've lapsed on) and the five overlays I'd be submitting.

I'm tired of ruining other people's fun because of my toybox only, and I'm hot tired of having to change my ideas because "sorry buddo this one sandbox I like to play in says that name is taken". I'm too old to deal with that, especially when there's toyboxes elsewhere.

Which is easy for me, but one more loss of revenue for this site. I haven't spent a dime in many years for this reason, and frankly I'd love to change that because yeh I've spent a ton in the past. A shameful amount.

But if that's the route, I will on fact log in daily just to ensure my names stay right right they are.

Big mood. My baby is a Hazelnut or a Hazel. Zero chance of either.

Am I misunderstanding this thread? I thought everyone can have an Alexia or a Jane (when changes for through) and it would affect the original name that’s been on a players account for 10 years, or am I just tired and can’t grasp this atm?

I know a lot of users log in right before clearing (like a few minutes before) just to prevent their names from clearing

If I had a pet named Pepper, he’d be a Pepper-roo, Pepsi, Pepps even though his name is Pepper.

I guess it just depends on the person

Why would the original pets be affected by non-unique names or even a nickname system?

I have no idea honestly. I thought maybe it would go Alexia (1) Alexia (2) Jane (22)

No... that is not the suggestion at all. No one would want that.

I don't know exactly how a nickname suggestion would go, like how they would handle each part (URLs, name on profile, name on user's pages like training, etc) but for non-unique pet names it would literally be: Alexia Alexia Jane

The difference would come down to URLs tying in pet IDs or only using pet IDs instead of relying solely on names.
