I use to think when you hit 80 your hair went curly cause all the grannies over here had perms 8D! Also, I didn’t think girls farted or pooped for some random reason XD... which is weird cause I’d seen my sister and mum use the bathroom. A girl farted next to me when I was about 9 and I told my mum. She was like ‘booooy, y u so dumb?’ XD!!
[tot=Ninja]
i was talking about this earlier with my brother and figured i'd share~
so in italy women don't take their husband's surname when they marry right, and until i was like 13 i assumed it was this way everywhere so the first time someone asked me about my mum's maiden name i was so confused?? also bc i was like 12 and my english was super great lmao so i thought maiden and maid were the same thing?? and i was like, my mum isn't a maid wtf
I THOUGHT THAT TOO!! Every old lady I knew had curly hair and I thought it was like when you get wrinkles. 😂
I always thought of maidens like medieval times maidens and had no idea how that correlated rofl.
I thought if I stepped on a crack, I would harm my mom's back (after the saying). xD I got really obsessive about avoiding cracks on pavements. T_T
also, I was learning English as a kid for the first time so I didn't know any better but when kids said 'made you look' I thought they said 'major look' instead and didn't understand what they were saying. |D
When I was in grade school, I had no concepts of flipping people off and I was paying with my hand tapping with one of my fingers to the table. It happened to be my middle finger. So the kid got triggered and told the teacher and I had to go to the principal's office to be talked to. They found out I literally had no idea what "flipping the bird" meant and my action was just coincidental. I was a wreck in the principal's office crying though lol. I think I didn't get in trouble in the end.
I have countless songs that I thought had different lyrics, but one of my top favorite childhood confusions was thinking that the saying was "it's a doggy dog world out there." Far more innocent than the real phrase "dog-eat-dog." lmao
"Dang son, where'd you find this?"
When I was little I had trouble seeing it when someone was trying to be mean to me. I was in ballet and choir and basically anything that got me attention lol and because I was into all these activities where you had to listen to criticism I was kind of numb to harsh criticism. I mean starting at age 3 I had to learn to ignore the tone of a teacher's "Fix your face! You look like we taught a troll doll to plie!" and hear that I needed to relax my face and concentrate on looking pleasant to keep the illusion that this was easy even during workouts.
So, things like being told that my clothes were ugly or that I talked too much didn't really register as rude to me until some time in middle school. I just internalized everything. I'd never wear that shirt again or I'd get a little quieter. Sometimes it was really helpful though. As trite as it is: hurt people hurt people. A lot of them just need a little kindness. I made a few snide little jerks into friends that way.
"You're in choir? I can probably sing better than you." "Oo let me hear! Yeah, you should sign up, we've got a few spots open."
Hmm for me I had a few.
I assumed boys had their hearts on the right and girls had theirs on the left of the chest.
Your blood was blue in the body but comes out red when you got hurt.
When I saw a map of the world I assumed that was just one side and that on the other was a whole new set of countries and stuff no one discovered yet.
Hmmm I probably have more but my memory is spotty right now.
I remember encountering the word 'playboy' (in the context of Stupendous Man LMAO) at... I think eight? I thought it meant someone, specifically a boy, who was so rich he didn't have to work and could just play all day.
The entire time growing up, I thought my nana's hair never went grey. I knew most old people's hair went grey, but I guess I thought that hers stayed brown because she always acted so youthful and exuberant or something. My mind was kinda blown the first time I saw her getting her roots done.
I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of any specific examples atm.
