I feel we've talked about this before, but my brain is an asshole and doesn't retain much memory soooo... Are you able to use substitute milks like nut, coconut, lactaid ?

Why not just have soy or almond on hand then ? I am not asking to sound mean, just genuinely curious. I tend to forget lactaid is basically lowgrade milk with added enzymes XD

because its expensive, doesn't work in several recipes and my dad doesn't like it. We typically use powdered milk (which is skim). However, it spoils quickly so this week since I'm alone, I had to buy some Mayfield skim milk.

so lemme step back a mo, see when I was a baby, the docs couldn't figure out why I was getting so dehydrated and violently ill. I wasn't able to nurse with Mum because she was on blood clot meds the moment I was born (had to be induced early). It took them awhile to figure out every time I was given formula within 15 minutes my body was rejecting it.

LUCKILY the paediatrician there was a top specialist in childhood allergies. He explained to my parents that since I was in infant we could get my body to learn to tolerate a small amount of dairy if started now. He set up a 5 year plan. My folks followed it well. So by the time I was 5, I was able to have up to 2% milk. I'll never get higher than that though.

Now here's the part most Americans get lost with-- see I'm allergic to an enzyme in milk that typically gets removed in lower fat content milk. (or at least enough so my body doesn't reject it) In fact though typically I'm okay with skim milk in moderation not all companies make it the same way--there's no uniformity. So I have to be even more careful. I had some parmalot (sp?) soy milk once that made me violently ill. They must have added the enzyme in or not cleaned the stuff they used for milk--not sure. I've had a problem in Mississippi once where I was staying at a friends house. had 1/4 of a cup of their 2% milk and was sick for 3 days. Couldn't keep anything down. it was terrible.

When I lived in England though, the have what's called E-numbers. Its basically things added into foods and so on. What we simply did was ordered Skim milk with no enumbers. Never had a problem anywhere in the country since it was processed the same way through out the country. But here its different from place to place. And even with the soy.

However if at any point I do move, i likely will have to switch to Almond milk as I simply can't drink the powdered milk fast enough--with only 8oz my max a day.

Hope this makes sense

Powdered milk usually comes in entirely too big of containers. I can't make certain breads because I only use a few ounces and then the rest will just sit there and go bad. But back to you. It really sucks that things aren't consistent here. It's bloody annoying. And to top it off, even if you could order the non-enumber milks online it would be expensive as Hell.

exactly. I can make 2 quarts, but its off in three days. I simply can't have that much milk o.0. What breads do you wanna make with it? Maybe we can make some of those.

yep. its frustrating. Still I'm glad I can have some. especially given that America seems to be dairy capital. I mean milk is in every bloody thing o.0 You know there was milk in the dental toothpaste my dentist wanted me to use o.0. cheese is harder too because its high concentration so I have to avoid high milk content cheeses. i stick with kraft 2% cheddar and skim mozzarella. and only have a small bit. Places like MacDonald's I used to be able to have their milkshakes. But now I can't. Guess they changed what milk they use. I did find how to make my own, so I buy the ice cream I know I'm safe with, then make my own milk shake. that's all my milk for the day but its soooo good.

I wonder if buying the powder and freezer sealing it would work. Using x amount, then vacuum sealing the rest. It would be too much for me still, but maybe for you ? I haven't had powdered milk in my house for years, so I don't remember the instructions. Also, bread instructions follows its own thing so I don't read milk instructions XD The breads I can think of off the top of my head that I wanted to make were my basic white bread, and cinnamon roll dough.

in the power form its fine for us but I can't keep the liquid from spoiling before I can drink it. i think we buy it once a month in powder? We have done dry pack canning on it before.

ooh cinaroll :D

I've had a long day. threw away two of my dead plants, cleaned the pots, repoted two plants, watered a couple other ones. Did some sewing, made dinner, did dishes-- I'm tired haha.
