I just left Portland Wednesday. I was out there for 6 weeks, lied to by family there, and was homeless for a couple weeks until I begged my parents to let me come live with them in Wisconsin (I'm from Iowa).
And yeah. The CHEAPEST rent we could find was a tiny $900 studio. Which we couldn't afford to get into. Our two bedroom apartment in Iowa was $595.
Far north west coast here. Alaska.
Were you there by choice? I was homeless for about that long last year. Thank goodness for airports, libraries, and emergency shelters. Hope you're in a safer place.
Portland was my husband and I's dream. We were planning on moving in 5 years or so. But then his cousin, who lives there, said 'oh come stay with me! I have room and I'll give you a job working for me for $35/he!' ....both were a lie. So we had to go live with her brother, his wife, and their roommate. And they were a freakshow. Like, had their children taken away, kind of freakshow. Anyway, they kicked us out because after a week and a half of us eating nothing but pb sandwiches, we bought pizza. And they disapproved of how we spent our money. So we lived in our car. With 3 cats. (Oh, their roommate threatened our cats. Even though we kept them soley in our tiny windowless room.) We stayed in the Wood Village Walmart parking lot.
Oh yikes. Sounds like a bunch of shady characters. Sadly you never know who you can trust sometimes. I'm glad you got out OK without having to suffer the long winter. Out of curiosity how safe does it feel to live in a Walmart parking lot? I feel like the security combined with the funny people that go there must cancel each other out.
It actually wasn't that bad. We stayed a couple nights at a Vancouver one with HIGH security. I actually felt safer with the more lax security of Wood Village. Only once was there a sketchy person, a lady, who would bolt up to cars, look into them, and bolt to another another car, and repeat. Otherwise, I don't know, I felt kind of a comradely with my fellow homeless people. There is a corner of the parking lot that all of us who lived in our cars kind of gathered. And there was a stray cat that was super nice that I fed.
That's awesome. Kind of sounds like a party. Being homeless really is an experience. Good to cross off thr bucket list but now I'm gonna avoid it like the plague.
Central Oregon >_>
I will buy your left over Steamworks trinkets!
Grumpy Cat is my spirit animal.
I live in Everett, WA. I'm from this area, but have always hated the PNW. I need SUN. I hate cold, overcast, rainy days so much and that's what it is 90% of the time, other than in summer. I am also cold all the time and find 80° to be the comfortable minimum temperature indoors.. I like high heat and when I lived in Tucson briefly, I didn't use my air conditioner once, the entire summer. (And it got 110° +) I'm actually planning to move back to AZ later this year (The east valley of Phoenix) or Gainesville FL (For a year). I'm thinking Gainesville, because I've never been to the east coast, or experienced much hot humidity. I also like storms and would like to experience a hurricane season. (If there's an evacuation order, I'll just leave)
Used to live Northern California, but sadly had to move to North Carolina a few weeks ago. /: I lived in Stockton and Modesto my whole life. On the new today there was a flood near the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, some lady had said that it was horrible and heartbreaking to see everything you worked hard for and to build underwater. You can put a fire out but water just stays.... Obviously this woman hadn't heard of the Camp fire that literally destroyed the entire town of Paradise. I remember walking outside a few times during the day and saw a sunset due to the smoke in the air. It got so bad that school closed because of the bad air quality. Smoke days, not snow days. XD
I miss home.
Washington! Ah, gotta love the great north west.
I use to live in battle ground Washington ..sadly I live in Florida now ..never leave the north west its not worth it ! Disney is fun but not worth the move I could live with out the heat and hurricanes I miss the country side. Also rent is just as bad here as it was in Washington.

(If there's an evacuation order, I'll just leave) If you like the heat then yea come down to Florida just be aware that it can be like 100 degrees in the shade here and the humidity is awful. Some people can handle heat but the humidity can get you. For example it will say 80 degrees but the real feel is 100. I'm not trying to tell you to not come just making sure you know I have a lot friends that didn't know about it and liked the heat but don't like it here due to humidity, bugs, nature trying to kill you (gators, poision ivy, ect.) and hurricanes. I will say if you do move down here and need a job Disney is always hiring and its a wonderful place to work with good opportunity's and benefits. I got the job wile I was still in Washington, moved down and started in like 2 weeks. (there was a hurricane that slowed things down) I don't work there any more but my husband still does and he loves it. (I'm a stay at home mom now) There are pros and cons to everywhere me personally, I want to move back up north but its not going to happen since the benefits at Disney are too good to pass up for another job.
Portland, Oregon! Give it about five years time and I'll be living in the more rural parts of oregon, but for now, I'm in the bustling metro of PDX.
