Gee, apparently a lot of little things changed while I wasn't paying attention over the years. Does anyone know if the option to turn on or off the site-wide profanity filter still exists? I can't seem to find it.

It used to show up on the preferences page there, but I know it hasn't been working for a while. Looks like the option has been removed completely for now. Hopefully it can be fixed and added back eventually for the people who want to use it.
This feature was removed intentionally. There are currently no plans to bring it back.

Well, works for me. Thank you!

I'm curious - does the removal of the profanity filter also affect profanity in things like graphics, GIFs and art?
Those rules remain in place.

Ah, I see. Thanks! But... that seems odd.
So you can say "fuck" on the site without getting reprimanded. But if you use it in a gif in a place that you can't edit or delete (lookin' at u, news comments), you're due for a verbal warning at best and an official one at worst, if you get reported and it's not your first offense.
Also, wondering why the filter was removed? Too much maintenance, wasn't worth the effort, or something else? I wasn't using it, I'm just being nosy. :'D
I'm in agreement with you on that differentiation being weird, I don't much agree with a lot of the rules put in place here, but in this case at least I'd wager it's because they plan on bringing the filter back. As for why it was removed in the first place, from everything I've seen it wasn't working correctly. I clearly remember even one of my own posts getting censored at one point when I didn't have the filter on, I found out the other day it's because the site was having some weirdness with filtering everyone regardless of their profanity settings.
Those are just my own guesses though, based on what I've read outside of this thread.

Yep, I know it was broken and ended up being disabled for everyone. But I've also seen mentions of a new filter being in the works? But Bug clearly stated in this topic that there are currently no plans to bring the filter back, so... I'm confused. ._.
Oh, jeez, I even read that and I already forgot. My apologies. That does make it a tad more curious.

No worries, it happens! c: I'm hoping we can get some more clarification here. I don't mind the filter being gone, but I'd like a list of words Subeta considers profanity so I know what to look out for.
Dill replied here about why the rule is still in place:
So, outside filters can pick up on typed profanity but they won't be able to filter out images that have profanity in them. That's why the rule is still in place. Can't speak to the reasoning why it was removed, though!
