The elderly women rose and walked to the front as if she was floating. She certainly did not walk as if she was in her mid-80’s. She flicked her wand a few times and several cages appeared. A small clear plastic cage contained a Bowtruckle. Then there was a bird cage with a Jobberknoll. And in the last cage there was a Fwooper.
“Well now, it appears it’s my turn now. For those who are not acquainted with me I am Rosa Pinto, the new Care of Magical Creatures Professor.” Her Spanish accent was pronounced. “Magizoologists study magical creatures. Sometimes they are also called wizarding naturalists. You don’t need anything special for this field. In fact you don’t even have to graduate. What you do need is a love for animals or at least the magical creature you wish to study. Many magizoologist choose to study within one particular animal, like dragonlogists specialise in dragons. Personally, I would recommend anyone entering the field to have a good knowledge of healing spells. You may need them for the care of the animal or at the very least the care of yourself.” She clapped her hands. “So what questions do you have for me?”
Jona rushed into the room with all the speed his legs could muster. He was tempted by the sweets, however he noticed a professor speaking and found a place next to Zoe () to sit. He listened to what the professor had to say and released a huge sigh of relief. He whispered to Zoe, "Thank goodness! I thought I might've missed the magizoologist already!" Truthfully, he was a little disappointed to discover that the magizoologist speaking was so old, but still grateful for the experience. Once she was finished, Jona threw his hand into the air, but after called upon, he got really nervous. "So, um, I hope to become something like a veterinarian or doctor for magical creatures when I grow up. But, it's not something that I hear about often so I was wondering how to, like, do it? I totally have a love for animals and I constantly pleasantly surprised by all the magical creatures out there. Which is why I know I wanna work with them somehow. And, well - " He stopped there and shrugged. He was starting to ramble.
Rosa ignored Jona's tardiness and also Zoe who smiled and say welcome in a whisper.
Instead, Professor Pinto simply replied, "Well, I think for studying you'll want to be good at Charms, herbology, and potions especially focusing on healing. Also of course care of magical creatures. Knowing what can heal and how to do it will really help you on your way. A lot of healing spells can work for animals. There are a lot of magizoologiest who help heal injuries animals. Some of it is rather learn as you go. You'll kinda wind up like a freelance go to guy. If Hubert the Hippogriff is sick, his human will be sending owls out trying to find someone to help Hubert. You fix Hubert up and you'll start getting a clientele rather quickly--especially if you make friends with pet shops and other magizoologists. A dragonlogist might not have as much experence with a Jabberknoll for example but his pet is sick. Who can help? Does this help you?"
(OOC - I'm thinking about you often and hope things are getting better for you and your family! 💚 🐍 )
during the break Being glad that her friend seemed to be well, regarding the previous lecture, Elizabeth smiled when Lenore() accepted the cookies. "It's alright, don't worry.", she said with a careful nod, "I admit my question was a bit...too much. But I was curious for...some reasons." She bit her lip and was fighting with herself whether she should go on or not. Would she really want to talk about this in a public space like this? She shot a quick glance around. Then, most people were busy chatting, eating or drinking and nobody paid attention to both of them. However, she still lowered her voice. You never know. "See, my family is, although we're a respected family and my father having an honourful position in the Ministry, often regarded with great suspicion just because our family in the paternal line is able to speak Parseltongue. It's sometimes as if we're the next and future spawn of evil as well just because of...well, you could say a very distant relative as the lines split up some centuries ago. Two, if I'm correct." With a wry smile when she said the last words, Elizabeth reached for one of the cookies as well.
current time Elizabeth had continued to listen to Professor Mather's lecture. Being a potioneer wasn't her cup of tea, but this gave her an insight on how her potions teacher behaved like out of class and what she expected from students. And, of course, Elizabeth wanted to achieve top marks in every subject.
When Professor Pinto appeared and let several cages with creatures appear, Elizabeth looked at them with curiosity. Thankfully, the professor seemed to be competent in her subject as the Fwooper was silent. Even more, this woman didn't looked as old as she probably was, except for a few wrinkles and the grey hair of course, but she had a brisk and graceful walk, making her appear much a lot younger. However, her words irritated Elizabeth greatly. The Professor was telling the students that they weren't required to graduate to be a Magizoologist? What kind of career was that? It was without rhyme or reason and just needing love for animals seemed so irrational that it was ridiculous. You couldn't just work with only your passion. Everyone could learn some healing spells from a book and Elizabeth wondered how many Magizoologists were out in the world without having graduated. Such a thing was flying in the face of reason and she carefully took a sip of her butterbeer.
Just a few moments later, a boy() appeared and she kind of remembered him from the picnic . Curious, Elizabeth looked back to the teacher, wondering how she would deal with someone being late, given the fact that Merlin had been scolded by Professor Mathers. Professor Pinto was a different teacher though, so her reaction could possibly be interesting.
(OOC² - What a week, so glad I have more time now! Sorry for the delay! :< )
@/Raven Jona thought hard about what the professor said. As a first year, he didn't yet know where his skill set lie and he was looking forward to finding out. In a muggle way of seeing it, Potions seemed equivalent to cooking - and he'd only ever made toast and eggs in his life; Herbology seemed like gardening - again, not something he had any experience in doing; and then there were charms - which he believed he had a lot of. Really unsure of what to do with all the information he was given, Jona simply nodded and said, "Yeah, I think so. Pretty sure I could free-lance easy enough, but I don't know how well I'll be at my classes yet. Lucky I know what I wanna do, though! That way I can focus on those things. Thanks, professor." Jona tried to smile extra bright, for he had come in too late to catch the professor's name and didn't want to embarrass her (or himself) by drawing attention to that fact.
"Well I'm sure you'll learn soon enough. Knowing the magical properties of things and how they work is very much something anyone can do if they try hard enough. You're welcome and young man, don't make a habit of entering in late. If you do so in my class you'll be asked to leave and serve a detention. Safety instructions are always provided at the start of a lesson and certainly not in the middle."
((ooc: I swear I'm so busy lately, i feel you. -snugs- welcome back))
As Professor Pinto made her way to the front, Drew leaned forward eagerly. He recognized the new professor from the introduction at the welcome feast as well as from the Care of Magical Creatures class. He tried to ignore the fact that she was older and waited to hear what she had to say, his eyes lighting up a bit at the sight of the Bowtruckle and the other creatures. But when the professor made her short speech, Drew frowned a bit in disappointment. His love of reading, coupled with his desire to be a magizoologist, meant that he was already familiar with the information she gave. He wanted something new…something that would help him out.
As Jona charged in, Drew sighed. What was with these people coming in late? It wasn’t as though the flyers telling the date and time hadn’t been posted for days beforehand. He sat quietly as Jona piped up and asked his questions. Drew had to wrinkle his nose slightly at hearing that potions and herbology were needed in the profession. He’d been working hard to get better in both of them, but he wasn’t sure he was good enough. Then again, he didn’t actually have to graduate to become a magizoologist, but Drew knew he would, so maybe his skills would be advanced enough to make him a good one.
After Jona’s turn was done, Drew raised his hand, ready to ask questions for the first time in the workshop, and said, “Professor Pinto? How did you know that you wanted to become a magizoologist, other than what I assume is your love of animals? And did you study or train with anyone other than taking the classes you already mentioned or was it more like on the job training and you learned as you went? How do you actually get started in a career of magizoology after graduation? Do you specialize in a certain creature? Do you have any favorites out of all the animals you’ve dealt with? What was the worse creature you’ve had dealings with and why?” Drew paused and then flushed. He was sounding as bad as Merlin with all the questions! But darn it, this was his love/passion, and he wanted answers!
“Well, Mr. Wilder, I am new to this field,” the professor confessed. “This is my first year teaching. I’m a fairly well-known journalist. I’ve worked with wildlife and learnt a lot in my travels, though I’m not sure if many would consider me a magizoologist until now. I haven’t specialized in any one creature, no. Your Headmistress met me thanks to the Triwizard tournament and offered me a position. I simply couldn’t refuse this chance. Let’s see, oh yes, in one of my travels we came across Erumpent. Oh it was so lovely. Very peaceful creatures unless provoked. Well as it happened it did get provoked and with some impediment charms and a freezing spell, we were able to keep it safe from exploding, thus saving its life. Well the worst I think would be a piece I did with a manticore. Given that they are one of the most dangerous creatures in the wizarding world and earning a XXXXX, Beast category, I’m sure you can understand why. Its skin repels all charms and the sting causes instant death. Well, this one killed a troll and was heading towards a village. The magizoologists were even considering using a dragon in an attempt to get the manticore away. In the end though, a dragon was not used. It was cornered and killed. Its death to me was the worst. The safety of the village was the priority and the creatures are ferocious, yet, I still regret the loss of the life. It was just doing what it does. I wish there were always happy stories but there aren’t. Some people lose limbs or even die working with these amazing creatures. And not every creature can be saved—that is a tough lesson to learn. Hearing it and seeing it are two different things.”
Marcia grinned at Professor Mather's () response. She was relieved to see the Professor get rather excited to talk about herself, and knowing a little more about her made her seem more human and approachable. "Wow, that's amazing..." Marcia whispered thoughtfully, mostly to herself, but if the Professor heard, she wouldn't mind.
After the Professor had finished, Millie () came up to greet her. "Yes, that's me." Marcia replied somewhat shyly. She didn't know it was such a well known fact around school that she wanted to be a baker. "That's quite interesting. I'll have to make a visit out there during our break this year. I'd love to talk to the bakers." She internally questioned if there might be some legality issues with wizards and muggles operating out of the same business, but that was an issue for another time because the next presenter soon stepped up to the front of the room
Marcia listened to Professor Pinto's lecture dilligently and politely. She wasn't very much interested in Magizoology, though it did seem like a fun career path. All of the animals presented were so unique and lovely. When the Professor opened the room to questions, Drew () seemed so absolutely eager that it earned a chuckle out of Marcia. He would have to slow down on those questions for anyone else to keep up! She was quite surprised that the Professor somehow managed to take in all of that at once and provide such a detailed, and honestly quite fascinating, answer.
(Ooc: Thanks everyone for understanding and tge good wishes.)
Merlin was excited when he saw the animals and wanted to run pet them but he did his best to refrain from doing it. “Professor Pinto, can I pet the Fwooper? Magnus dad has a bowtruckle and it’s very lovely but I haven’t pet one of those birdies. Why didn’t you bring other animals? Like maybe a pretty dragon or a hippogriff? I would have brought more animals, you could have asked me- I have lots of pets and...” He realized he was blabbering so he shut up. “I’m sorry, I adore animals.” He took out his snake. “You can borrow it and my Spellz too.” He offered the little owl too.
Professor Pinto was pleased with Merlin's enthusiasm. "Yes Mr. Pendragon you may pet Felicia. She's a very affectionate bird." She smile. "Mr. Lee's father has a bowtruckle huh? How lovely. They are very shy creatures." Her eyebrow rose. "How on earth would I get a dragon here dear boy? Let alone enough people to keep it stunned and everyone safe? I did try to get a hippogriff but that fell through at the last moment and I only had enough time to bring these fellows. Thank you for your kind offer. Let's leave your snake and owl up front then so anyone who wishes to may come up and pet them. Such a sweet pretty bird, so small. And a very well cared for snake too."
Drew was surprised when Professor Pinto () knew his name. She hadn’t been there long and there were a lot of students at Hogwarts. And then to learn that Professor Pinto was new to the field was even more of a shock and he wondered why she was even chosen if she wasn’t a ‘real’ magizoologist. Maybe she was one of the ones who had never graduated. He gave her a curious look when she mentioned being a journalist. Hmm, now that was something he’d never thought about really. He could put together his love of animals and his writing, much as his dad used his knowledge of the magical world to create fantasy books for muggles.
Hearing Marcia’s () little chuckle had Drew blushing a bit since he was pretty sure it was because of his barrage of questions, but he was taking in the stories by Pinto.
The thought of seeing an Erumpent made Drew smile slightly. He’d read about them and knew that very few even still existed. “I’m glad you were able to save the Erumpent, Professor, but I thought they were only in danger of exploding during mating,” Drew said with a questioning look. His eyes widened at the tale of the manticore and Drew nodded as Professor Pinto mentioned the high danger rating of the beast. That was one creature Drew was fine with not seeing. But like the Professor he was somewhat sorry that it had had to die when it was only acting like what was normal for it. “Too bad it couldn’t have been turned and rerouted somehow to an uninhabited area,” he commented. “Was it so enraged that no one could communicate with it?” He sighed and nodded at the comment regarding the fact that not every creature could be saved. That would be the hardest and worse thing to deal with to Drew’s mind.
As Merlin () got involved and even offered his pets as exhibits, Drew grew quiet again. He listened as the professor praised Merlin and wondered what was so great about an owl and a snake. A lot of the students had similar or even stranger pets. When dragons were mentioned he waited for Merlin to tell about being a dragon in animagus form, or living with dragons and having a pet one, or both. Looking down at his empty glass, Drew decided to quietly go and help himself to more pumpkin juice. Afterall, he had nothing as cool as dragons to offer…just a dog and horses, but he’d keep them and the information to himself.
"No, it's anytime it is provoked. But Mating season is worse, yes. After all if you were courting a girl and you had four other boys after the same girl, wouldn't you be a bit provoked?" Professor Pinto replied. "Yes, of course they tried to talk to the manitcore. They are sentient and smart, but they don't listen to wizards. They don't trust wizards. Its hard to blame them. Even people don't listen to other people. Muggle police and aurors have had to use lethal methods at times."
“Thank you professor.” Merlin went to softly pet the bird. “Hey Felicia, how are you today? Don’t be scared of the crowd.” He smiled kindly at the bird. “I suppose it’s not easy to do, but dragons are the coolest.” He simply said. “Thanks, I know everyone has owls but none as small as Spellz- he is sweet too.” He went back to his seat to listen to the others with attention.
Drew nodded at the comments from Professor Pinto. Of course he knew that manticore were smart and sentient, otherwise he wouldn’t have asked the question. At the comment about courting, Drew wrinkled his nose. “I wouldn’t be provoked because I’m not going after any girl, let alone one that’s already got other boys interested in her. I’m good with my animals and books.”
"I suppose," Professor Pinto said, "though anyone who specializes in an animal will argue their favourite is the best. Yes, a very sweet bird. I am fond of birds, which is why I brought my Jabberknoll and fwooper with me." To Drew she shrugged. "I'm merely saying that it heightens their ability to be provoked. And honestly, you can't say that for sure. No one knows what will provoke them in one way or the other until it happens."
"Now, it appears my time is drawing near. Feel free to ask me some questions if you still have any if not, please feel free to take a look at the animals or partake of the refreshments Miss Tudor (()) has provided.
Drew looked confused at Pinto’s response to him. What the heck was she talking about?? he thought to himself. He hadn’t said anything 'for sur'e about the animals. He’d only made a comment about himself and of that he WAS sure…he knew himself better than this old woman after all! Giving a dismissive shrug and shaking his head, he was done with things. He moved to the refreshment table wondering if he’d actually learn anything at all in certain classes this term if this was what the new professors were like.
((OOC: Mary told me Rosa is at the age she has no filter. So that's how she replied. She doesn't think Drew should be so sure he wouldn't be bothered until it happened. ))
Private Outfit The lights began to flicker, telling the students to return to the seats. Andrew Tudor stood in front of the classroom adjusting his tie and had a big smile.
"Hello everyone. As many of you may know, I'm Andrew Tudor, Millie's father. Please call me Andy, my father was Mr. Tudor. I have been a healer for over 20 years. Prior to starting my career, I was a Ravenclaw and studied Alchemy my sixth and seventh years. I finished here at Hogwarts in 1994 and immediately began training to become a healer. Four years later, I returned to when word was spread on the impending Battle of Hogwarts. After assisting with some of the fighting, I began to help the wounded, which led to the longest night and morning of my life.
"After the battle, I decided to travel the world to learn more about other wizarding communities and their healing practices. This is when I discovered my passion for travel. After a few years, I met Millie's mother while in Germany and we moved back to London. I accepted a position at St Mungo's on the second floor, Magical Bugs and Diseases, where I have worked sever since. My specialty is in Dragon Pox, and I am always working on better treatments and cures.
"Now that's enough about me. The healing profession is divided into different levels. St. Mungos employs several different of these levels and you can tell depending on the shade of green of our robes. The ones in dark forest green robes are Paramedics, as refereed to in the Muggle World. They leave the hospital and provide life saving care to wizarding patients and bring them to St Mungos for further care. The healers in lime green are what muggles refer to as Nurses. They tend to patients every need, such as minor bandage changes, assist in eating, using the faculties, really just about anything a patient may need to be more comfortable while recovering. Those in mint green are the units welcome witches or wizards. They direct visitors and assist us with paper work. And finally, those who wear emerald green are what muggles refer to as doctors. Each healer begins as a welcome witch or wizard before becoming a paramedic, then a nurse, and finally a doctor. You may decide to remain at one position if you desire, such as a wizard or witch enjoys working as a nurse role may remain as a nurse. Each wizard has their preference.
"As many of you know, St. Mungos consists of six floors, five of which provide treatment. The ground floor is both a reception and artifact accidents. The first floor is the Creature-Induced Injuries unit. Anyone injured by magical creatures such as werewolves, vampires, dragons, etc. receive care here. As I mentioned, the second floor is the Magical Bugs and Diseases floor. Aside from treating dragon pox, we also treat Vanishing Sickness, and Scrofungulus. There have always been procedures in place for healers to use in order to prevent the spread of these illness. St. Mungos is always creating more effective charms to prevent the spread of magical illnesses.
"The third floor treats those with Potions and Plant Poisoning. They are what muggles call Poison Control. The fourth floor consists of two units. While they both care for those harmed by spells, one unit cares for acute, or sudden cases and the second unit cares for long term patients. Some under a misfired memory charm and others under long term spell damage.
"Finally, the floor is for visitors to have a cup of tea or coffee and a gift shop.
"Now, not all healers work at St. Mungos. There are healers within wizarding schools around the world and some healers even have private offices for more minor ailments and general care.
"And that about covers it. Does anyone have any questions?"
Poppy sat up and listened intently to Millie's father (). She had paid attention dutifully enough to Professor Mathers and Professor Pinto, but she knew she could hear them speak in class and that they were more readily available than Millie's other guests. In order to stay focused she had starting taking notes in a little orange notebook with a swan feather quill. There were some interesting questions during the Q&As, and the answers were even better.
Andy's lecture didn't disappoint at all and taught Poppy many new things. "Sir, what's the most common injury, and what’s the most severe injury you've seen in the Creature-Induced Injuries ward? So many people are intrigued by magizoology, and I imagine that problems can arise from that."
