The stone that I have chosen for my talisman is a green garnet. Garnets are known to be strengthener crystals which are helpful in maintaining focus and remaining unyielding despite surrounding forces. The green variety adds in the color rays of growth, awakening and perseverance. This stone will help to channel the powers of the runes inscribed on it in a focused, unyielding manner while illuminating new knowledge and spiritual growth. Carved into the shape of a skull, the runes have been inscribed on the back side and will be set into a ring of silver.

The runes that I have chosen have a similar character set. They also hold the energies of strength and stability. Hagalaz invokes the forces of both the creative and destructive while Eihwas tempers them with stability. In addition to these, I have chosen Laguz to invoke the energy of water which has always been the element that I feel most connected with and which gives me a strength of mind and spirit, as well as Ansuz which opens communication and symbolizes godhood. Inscribed in the order Hagalaz - Ansuz - Eihwas - Laguz, the incantation is HAEL, pronounced as the word 'hail' bringing to mind the force of a storm.

Brought together, these runes and the stone upon which they have been inscribed are to aid in standing firm, connecting and communicating with the destructive forces of nature as well as the creative forces that rebuild after destruction. To stand, accepting, in the storm, learning from it but not being broken by it.

Raine stopped for a moment at the table, examining the bits and bobs there. She saw lots of stones and crystals amidst the other items, and they immediately drew her attention. She focused in on a beautiful piece of fluorite, in shades of blue and purple. "How very Ravenclaw-esque," she said to herself. "And better yet, it would be perfect for my needs... Fluorite, for focus and concentration... Yes, perfect!"

She collected the stone and headed back to her desk, ready to begin etching in the runes. She examined the pages explaining the different runes, jotting down notes with her favorite quill pen as she went.

Raine, Ravenclaw I'm an avid language learner, studying every language from the modern muggle languages like Italian and German to ancient magical languages like Troll and Mermish. However, it's difficult learning many languages, and some, especially Mermish are very difficult, so any help I can glean is great... The object I've selected to inscribe is a fluorite pendant hanging from a sturdy but delicately fashioned necklace of silver. Silver is believed by some magicians to help with magic involving creativity, insight, and clarity. Fluorite is believed to help with research focus and concentration.

I've inscribed five runes on the sodalite. On the back of the stone, closest to my person, I've inscribed Ansuz, for communication. On the front, I've inscribed Mannaz, for aid in understanding the cultural side of language, and Dagaz, for clarity and revelation of meaning of the various words I encounter. On the right side, I've marked Hagalaz, for the creative forces necessary for communicating meaning and explaining words I do not yet know. Finally, I've inscribed the left side of the crystal with Jera, for gain and growth in my skill with the languages I study.

Chester Sauer, Slytherin

Chester walks up to the table filled with objects and thoughtfully considers each option. Nothing seems to pique his interest...until he remembers the object hidden within his jacket pocket. He slowly slides his hand in and pulls out a large, slightly worn Wyrm dragon's tooth, hoping no one notices. A slight smirk appears upon his face as he etches three runes into the tooth. After the runes are carved he whispers "Berkana...Birth and secrecy Thurisaz...Destruction and chaos Eihwaz...Death" Chester closes his eyes and tightly grasps the tooth in one hand, while smirk turns into grin. "Nothing living will ever escape death." Nothing more is said, purposefully neglecting to share the true meaning of his talisman.

Rosie followed the other students to the materials table and rummaged through the small trinkets. One of the stones sparked her interest. It was a dark green and had several splotches of red on it. After grabbing a silver chain and a few wires she settled down at her table to think about which runes she'd want to use.

Talisman Bloodstone or heliotrope carries an energy associated with vitality, strength and courage as well as protection. I want to enhance these qualities in the finished talisman so it can give you the courage and strength needed in a difficult situation and help you find success. In order for it to do that I inscribed 4 runes. First the rune Dagaz, meaning clarity and revelation, followed by Sowilo for good fortune. These two represent the goal you want to work towards and as such the talisman will help you find the right way. Those 2 runes are followed by Jera first, signifying the process and growth you need to fulfill in order to attain the fortune you seek. Lastly I inscribed the rune Uruz to give you the strength and courage to complete the growth required for your goal.

I believe combining these runes on a piece of bloodstone will create a powerful amulet that can help guide me to become the person I want to be. The incantation is split in two parts, DS-YU or DS-JU. The incantation should be pronounced somewhat like this: 'dsuh yuu'; where the combined DS is clearly spoken as one and the YU is spoken as in yummy with an elongated u.

Rosie flicked her wand so the metal wire wrapped around the stone and attached itself to the silver chain. Now the stone amulet could be worn as a necklace and it looked much better than the stone on it's own.

Niamh had studied Ancient Runes quite a lot at 4A, but this task was totally different to how they worked back in Egypt - this one actually sounded practical and interesting. Niamh first went to the back of the classroom to pick out an object, before returning to her desk and dragging her Rune Dictionary from the depths of her bag.

Niamh Doyle, Gryffindor Inspired by your pendant, I have chosen a small pebble with a small hole in the top, so I can wear it as a necklace. The pebble reminded me of the endless sand of Egypt, and the difference in appearance with the beaches in Scotland. To reflect my thrill at transferring to Hogwarts, I have chosen Wunjo for joy; Kenax for fire, to warm things up; and Laguz for the lochs which reflect the water so beautifully.

The reason for my choices is to enable me to keep my positive thoughts, and to protect me from the bitterly cold winter that everyone seems to enjoy here.

The inscription would be "wkl" which would be pronounced as "wickel".

Keet approached the table and took a look at the objects to be used for talismans. A beautiful, pear faceted piece of Tanzanite caught her eye. Her favorite stone! She picked it up carefully and took it back to her table, then opened her dictionary to page 7 to have a look at the runes.

Keet Arlie, Ravenclaw I chose a pear faceted piece of Tanzanite for my talisman, so that I can set it into a pendant later. Tanzanite is a beautiful gem that shifts from blue to purple, depending on the light. It is known for its protective properties, and for being useful for attaining deep meditation. Tanzanite is also supposed to be a soothing stone. Since I am an axious person who is often stressed, my hope is that the finished Tanzanite talisman will help to alleviate my anxiety, and help me clear my mind to meditate.

For my runes, I chose to inscribe Dagaz (clarity, revelation), Ingwaz (peace and plenty), and Algiz (protection), incantation pronounced "dia." Coupled with the Tanzanite, my hope is that it will help to soothe my anxiety (Ingwaz), allow for better meditation (Dagaz), and grant me protection from the dark arts (Algiz).

Ancient Runes class wasn’t high on Drew’s list of favored classes but the lesson of the day sounded fun. He made his way to the back of the room to search through the items for the perfect one to use to create his talisman. When he saw the malachite, Drew smiled and reached for the stone, feeling its weight and rubbing a finger over the surface. Yep this was the one. He carried the stone back to his desk and got to work creating both the runes and the essay to complete the assignment.

Drew Wilder ~ Slytherin I chose a piece of malachite primarily because of its beautiful green color. Not only does it seem prefect to represent Slytherin, but green is my favorite color. I also like the fact that while it is polished, the stone is irregular shaped. It makes it different and therefore special instead of being round or square. To me it somewhat resembles a leaf, which reminds me of the woods that I love.

The stone itself is known as a protection stone even before I added any runes. Malachite can also help with depression and anxiety. It guards against any negativity in your life. It is a healing stone, said to be able to help reduce fever because the copper inside the stone pulls the fever away from a person’s body.

However to make my talisman even stronger as well as more personal, I added four runes which are etched in silver, another nod to Slytherin colors. The first rune I used is Wunjo, which represents joy or pleasure. Everyone needs happiness in their lives. Then Algiz, a symbol associated with protection or self-defense, making the natural power of the stone greater. I also used Ehwaz because it represents a horse which I believe is my soul animal. The rune also stands for loyalty and pilgrimage. I like to think that I am loyal, but I’m sure at times some help will not go amiss. Also pilgrimage to me means traveling so I would like protection for my ravels. The last rune is Othala, meaning inheritance or home. My family is the most important thing in my life and I will do all I can to protect them and continue our lineage.

The runes are all joined in the semblance of a circle to create harmony and to show that all are equally important to me. I wish for joy and protection for my home and family as well as when I travel. Likewise I want to be loyal to those I care about and bring them joy. I am planning to add a chain to my talisman and wear it as a necklace in the hopes that it will help with all these areas.

Drew Wilder ~ Slytherin

((OOC: I apologize for the lack of artistic skills in paint to make the runes :D ))

Keliora, Ravenclaw I chose a pocket watch, because it reminded me of my grandfather. He would always carry it with him. Sitting on his lap and playing with it was how I learned to tell time.

I have inscribed the back of the pocket watch with kenaz for light, ansuz for communication, and wunjo for joy. Its incantation is "kaw", which combined with the runes, reminds me that staying true to myself as a Ravenclaw and letting my inner light shine out is how I can bring joy to myself and others.
