I think he gave me but I'm not sure. It didn't show the item in the event, but it's in my inventory and he's a pirate so it makes sense
This is one of those things that maybe a message should be added about (something like "Check your inventory to see what you got!"); he won't tell you what item you've received, but you will have a new item in your inventory after a success. That apple is, indeed, one of the possible rewards; you'll either get food from Rathskeller Inn, or you'll pocket a rat item. Or you'll find Dirty Matty and get nothing aside from an achievement the first time you get him.
