Suggestion: Go north and visit Denmark afterwards ;p
Well, if you can, you should visit Berlin. Alexanderplatz, Brandenburger Tor, Museumsinsel... living here means I do not see this city as an outsider, but it still has some spectacular views.
-The-Yena I would LOVE to bounce to Denmark, and if I was going on my own I 100% would. I've got lots of ancestors from Denmark and would love to go~
Berlin's not going to be doable for us- we'll be about 6 or 7 hours away from there and are already planning a few "travel to this" trips as is. :(
Hi~
Though I'm from Thuringia, which is nowhere near Frankfurt but at least in Germany, too XD From what I know, you should have no problem without speaking fluent german in cities like Frankfurt - BUT in small-ish citys/villages/rural areas you should ask first if they can speak english. We DO learn a second language in school, but we can choose between some (latin (hah), english, french, sometimes spanish, russian in the east).
If you don't like beer, you could try a german wine. Some of the best vineyards are located along the Rhine. Also, you HAVE TO eat bread. So much bread. Lots and lots of bread. Especially any kind of black bread.
If you have some time left and like to go outside, you could visit the Donnersberg. The nature there is beautiful and you could visit some old castle ruins, a celtic ringfort and a tower. I have to admit it's been a long time since I've been there, so I won't make any promises that it's still as impressive as back then xD
On another completely random note: I'm impressed by everyone of you trying to learn german :o
Oh, thank you for the suggestion! We're only going to be an hour away from Donnersburg, it looks like~ That'll definitely go on the to do list!!! I'm sloooowly working my way into beers- I've found two that are kind of decent (porters and sours), so hopefully beer in Germany where everyone swears it is better will actually be a thing I like, haha! I'm super down for wine (as is the best friend). And you don't have to tell me twice on bread- I am 10000000% in love with bread anyway. All the bread, all the time. Mmm.
Thank you so much for the suggestions!!!
If you go around this time next year, you can go to Christmas markets, which I highly recommend. I think they start in late November and honestly they are definitely worth a winter trip.
I sooo wish we would be there around Christmas! We'll be there mid-end of May and very beginning of June, though. I'm excited to see flowers and greenery, tho- I'm never fond of cold weather, so it's probably best for my first experience to be while it's not too cold, haha~
