"Perfect day for a Flying Lesson, don't cha think?" said Boakye to the students. "I'm Jerome Boakye, the Flying Instructor at Ilvermorny. My pal here may be known to some of you already. This is Carlisle Caswell, the Flying Instructor at Hogwarts."
"Today's lesson is rather simple and fun. Caswell and I will be teaching you about Quodpot. It is the most popular sport in America and the main sport we play at Ilvermorny."
"Quodpot was invented in the 18th century. The wizard Abraham Peasegood brought a Quaffle with him from England on his journey to America with the intention to start a Quidditch team upon his arrival. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the tip of his wand came into contact with the Quaffle in his trunk. Sometime afterward when he decided to throw the Quaffle around, it exploded in his face. Peasegood and his friends decided to recreate this effect on other balls and make a game out of it," said Caswell.
“In Quodpot two teams of eleven players try to throw the Quod into the a pot filled with a solution that prevents the Quod from exploding. The pot stands at the end of the Quodpot field. The players throw the Quod to their teammate in order to prevent the other team from throwing the Quod into their pot. A player must be careful when in possession of the Quod as the Quod can explode at any given moment. If the Quod explodes before a player throws it into a pot, that player is disqualified. If the Quod explodes mid-air then the last player to have touched the Quod is disqualified. The game continues until all the players of a team are disqualified,” explained Boayke as Caswell grabbed two leather balls from a trunk.
“In my right hand I have a Quaffle. In my left hand I have a Quod. As you can see there is no visual difference between a Quaffle and a Quod, but you can sense the difference when you hold one. A Quod has a faint pulse,” Caswell mentions and hands the balls to the closest students to him. “You don’t have to worry about the Quod exploding. Professor Finley casted a special charm on this Quod. It’ll be able to explode long after today’s lesson,” he chuckled.
“All righty. We can’t have a flying lesson without some flying. You’ll need to find a partner for the last part of the lesson. Your task for today is to throw the Quod into the pot at the end of the field. You’ll be playing against two dummies. You and your teammate will be playing against two dummies. You don’t need to worry about the Quod exploding before you can reach the pot. The practice Quods we’ll be using cannot explode. However, they’ll start to smoke if you’ve held on to the ball for more than 15 seconds. You’ll have to start at the starting circle again if that’s the case,” finished Boakye.
NEW DEADLINE: This assignment is due by September 15th at 11:59PM Monday, September 25th at 11:59PM.
Kat was just plain bad at sports. She dreaded the day this was coming but she had to do what she had to do. It was an assignment after all. She walked up to the line when it was her turn. Took a deep breath and held the quod, it was heavier than she expected but it would do. She finally opened her eyes to see it was smoking. Greeeeat she was not prepared for that and dropped the ball onto her foot. She bit her lip hard to keep from yelling. Looking around at everyone else. Ok, looks like no one saw. She picked it up, gave it a quick throw to no success she only made it half way to the pot. That was her first and only try. Well maybe she should try again. She threw the ball and it ramed straight into a dummy “Ug…” She looked to her partner the professor and groaned. He shook his head and laughed. He knew she wasn’t very good at sports. “Try again Kat.” He said, looking toward the pot she made a final throw and it went straight in!
(Hope this was good lol, haven't rped in forever DX Ilvemorny - Kat)
Teresa wanted to leave immediately when the task for the day was announced. If she was bad at quidditch what can she possibly do on a sport she has never played or had any idea how it was played. She looked at the Quod and sighs and searches for a partner, surely Merlin would pair with his pretty girlfriend River () but who could she ask to join her? Hopefully not the professor, she found another student that looked just like her - without a partner or potential partner so she walked toward her and asked. "Would you pair up with me? I have no idea what I'm doing, just so you know."
The girl smiled and nod since she had no partner. "I'm a good Quodpot player, or so my dad says - he is a fan and have taught me. I'm Melissa by the way from Ilvermorny."
"Nice to meet you, I'm Terry from Hogwarts."
The girls explained to Terry best she could how it was done and they started to play against the dummies. Terry send the Quod to Melissa and when it was in her hand again it begin to send smoke so they had to start again. This time she made sure to throw the Quod faster and in the end her partner scored since she obviously couldn't. "Thanks, surely I couldn't have done it without you."
((OOC: I made up the other character since I had no other time to do this and can't wait to see if someone wants to pair up.))
Teresa Evans, Hogwarts
“Well, where’s the fun in that?” Lydia whined when Professor Boakye explained the quod would not explode during the lesson. Lydia enjoyed Quidditch, but Quodpot was truly where her passions lie when it came to wizard sports. There was an urgency to the game that couldn’t be tamed nor faked. And of course, with an exploding ball being tossed around things can get very funny very fast.
“Anyone want to be my partner?” Lydia turned and shouted out. She decided that if someone didn’t step up to partner with her then she’d just ask one of the professors, as lame as that’d be.
Lydia / Ilvermorny
"I'll partner you Lydia ()," answered Ivy. She was only a passable Quodpot player, much preferring to watch the game from the stands with a sneaky flask of Firewhiskey. Flying freely around Mount Greylock was more fun in her opinion. The instructors were dreamy though, and maybe a Hogwarts boy would teach her about Quidditch before the tournament ended.
Ivy Lockwood, Ilvermorny
Hey! Your RP was good but I think part of the assignment is playing against two practice dummies with a partner, either another character you make up like , an actual partner like me and , or one of the professor characters. Love your new HA btw!

"Grrrreat! Well, then let's do this!" Lydia was super pumped to get out there. "Time to hot potato this quod right into that pot. So, would you prefer to start with the ball and then you can pass it on to me? Or vice versa? We could zig-zag the ball back and forth until whoever is closest throws it in." Lydia thought for a minute: "Buuuuuut....Professor Boakye did say that the dummies might succeed in getting the quod into our pot so we can't underestimate them." She snapped her fingers together methodically, as she does when she's is thinking up a strategy. She turned to Ivy, who had volunteered as tribute and said, "What do you think?"
"Why don't you start with the ball and pass it to me?" Ivy thought aloud as she went over Lydia's () strategy. "I'm a fast flier but I don't throw far enough to be really good at Quodpot. I can catch though, so your zig-zag formation should work for us. You're great and I'm not bad; we should at least be quicker than the dummies. I think we'll be able to outfly them before we have to worry about our pot."

Lydia nodded and listened to what Ivy had to say, throwing a thumbs up when she finished. "Got it. Let's go then!" And with that, she hopped up on her broom to meet Ivy in the sky. Lydia was pretty confident with her throwing abilities, so when Ivy got into position to catch the ball from her, Lydia motioned for her to keep going further out until she thought it was about as far as she could throw. Once there, Lydia called out to Ivy and threw the quod, mindful that she'd had the ball for exactly 12 seconds - she learned to count while holding it long ago.
Seb listened and tried to wrap his brain around the rules. In the end he was a little letdown that the Quad would not actually be exploding. Although he didn’t blame the Professors for not wanting to send multiple students to the infirmary with missing fingers. Seb was confident in his flying abilities, but having to work with a partner threw a wrench in the gears.
Looking around he wondered who it would be. Hopefully someone with flying experience, or better yet an Ilvermorny student who was good at Quodpot. “I’m free if anyone wants to team up.” He said aloud, hoping someone would chime in.
Ivy flew ahead of Lydia (), continuing past where she had planned to stop because Lydia urged her further. Catching Lydia's stellar throw nearly knocked the wind out of her. "Oof! What an arm!" Her teammate had barreled across the field as soon as she launched the Quod at Ivy. Ivy signaled for Lydia to stop and catch, and took a deep breath to steady herself. She tossed the ball with four seconds to spare, underhand in a high arc which put some distance on it but not nearly as much as the first pass. "I better fly as fast and far out as possible if I'm going to receive from Lydia," she thought.
(OOC: So Lydia threw to Ivy, and Ivy just threw to Lydia. You can RP Lydia making the catch, throwing again to Ivy, and Ivy making a short pass to Lydia who scores, if you'd like to finish up our entry. You could also just write up part of that and I'll finish whatever's leftover. Thanks for partnering with me!)

Lydia saw Ivy steady herself after catching the quod she threw - perhaps a little too hard. Lydia went ahead and bolted forward to readily catch when Ivy stopped her to calculate the throw. It was good, clean. Lydia caught it easily at the end of its arc. She kept going forward, but at a slower pace so that Ivy could catch up. Calling out to Ivy, she threw the quod once again - hopefully a little smoother this time. Ivy caught it far easier the second time around and wasted no time before she launched the quod right back at Lydia, who was quickly coming up to the basket. The play went as expected.
"GOOOOOAAAAAL!!!" Lydia howled wildly.
She was surprised there weren't more hiccups, but still pleased with the outcome. Coming off her broom on the ground, she made sure to high-five Ivy and congratulate her on that last pass.
((OOC: done and done. Thanks for RPing with me :) ))
(( Joint effort by and . Our girls have zero flying experience and therefore couldn't really manage the assignment, but they sure tried.))
River and Niamh 4A
Niamh waited to see if any of her fellow 4A students were willing to be the first pair to give it a go. She'd heard of Quidditch although she'd never played it before, but this weird Quodpot game did sound slightly less challenging, even if it seemed to rely more on accuracy than trying to catch a tiny Snitch. It all required her to be on a broom though, and she was much happier with her feet firmly on the ground, preferably with a decent book to read.
River blinked and gulped. How the heck was she going to do this? She'd never really flown before. She was just gifted a broom recently but that was about all the flying she'd really done on it.
She spotted her friend Nimah. "Hey, er, um...wanna team?" She would have liked to team with Merlin (()) but once she was more confident—she didn't want to look dumb in front of him.
Niamh looked at how nervous River appeared, and nodded. "Yeah, I'll team up with you," she said, wondering which one of them would be the first to fall off their broom.
Holding her hand over the broom, she said "up" and hoped she didn't sound as nervous as she felt. Carefully mounting the broom, she hovered a few inches from the ground as she tried to figure out the best way to balance.
River made a nervous squeal as she got on her broom and followed. “Er, so, um…” she said, “what do we do?” Sure she’d heard the lesson but it seemed to have just leaked out of her ears.
Niamh looked around and felt herself sliding backwards down the broom. Gripping it tightly she hauled herself back to where she felt she should be. "We've got to throw that Quod thing into the pot," she said, "so that means we've got to fly over there carrying one first. Holding it for more than 15 seconds makes the thing smoke, so I guess we need to pass it between us while avoiding those dummies."
She glanced over at the pot on the far side of the field and added, "this is going to be more challenging than I thought."
She was just about to ask where the Quod was, when someone tossed it towards her. She tried to catch it one handed and missed, but hoped that River might catch it as it headed her way.
River gave a nervous chuckle. Why couldn’t this be on her flying carpet? That she knew. “You’ve gotta be kidding me. But I don’t really know how to fly this thing,” she lamented. Her broom wobbled as she tried to catch the Quod and she lost her grip, falling the short distance to the ground. Very good thing Merlin wasn’t watching—at least she hoped he wasn’t. Sliding back on her broom she held the Quod thingy and gave it a light toss towards Niamh.
"I think you just lean forwards to move this thing," Niamh said, hoping that she was right, "don't ask me how you stop though," she added as she fumbled the Quod and just about caught it without falling off her broom.
Leaning forwards ever so slightly, the broom started inching towards the other end of the field. She could hear the other schools' students laughing at her slow pace, but at least she hadn't fallen off.... yet.
Counting the seconds, she waited until she got to ten before lightly throwing the Quod to River, hoping she was still as nearby as Niamh guessed - no way was she going to risk looking round while the broom was moving.
River caught the thing this time without falling off. “So, er what do I do with the ball? Are we just catching it?”
"We've got to throw it into that pot," Niamh explained, "that pot right the way over there," she added, pointing at the far end of the field which still looked like it was miles away from where they were.
River groaned. “Can this be over with already?” She throw the ball to Niamh and was happy she caught it. “Should I try to get out a little further to see if we can end this faster?”
Niamh caught the Quod, thankful that River hadn't thrown it too forcefully. "If you think you can fly that thing any faster, you're welcome to try. Just try not to fall off!"
River leant down and the broom shot off causing the girl to scream. Damn it, she’d forgotten to ask someone else how to stop it. She flew off towards the dummies and crashed into one, falling off the broom and landing painfully on the ground. She had a slight break in her wrist, but she wasn’t going to give up. She got back on her broom and waited for the quod to be thrown.
Niamh nearly lost her balance when she heard River scream, but just about managed to hold on. Waiting for the girl to catch up again and hoping that she wasn't too badly hurt from crashing into the dummy, Niamh leant to the side slightly to throw the Quod. Suddenly the broom veered off to the side, heading towards River's broom at a speed Niamh couldn't control. Screwing her eyes shut, she waited for the crash.
River saw Niamh hurtling towards her and had no idea how to stop it. She just looked in horror like a wide-eyed deer in wand light.
Mr. Caswell used Impedimenta to slow Niamh and then magically shoved River out of the way. He magically dragged the pair back to the starting line. “I think you girls need some flying lessons. Let’s end it here.” He saw River holding her wrist and realised she was hurt, so he fixed that. “Good attempt ladies.”
"Quodpot... what a weird sport," Zala mused as she flew a few laps around the field. The students were slowly gathering in pairs and Zala figured she should find someone as well. She wasn't particularly fond of any sports other than those in the water. Though she did enjoy flying and was rather good at it. She had a good balance and she thought throwing and catching a quaffle wouldn't be too hard. Zala landed near the students and walked up to them. "Seb! We could team up," she waved .

Not being a huge sports fan at all, Corvus found himself favouring Quidditch more than Quodpot, mostly for the case that the latter could explode. However, as the two flying instructors assured that the quod for this lesson wouldn't explode, he decided to give it a try. It was a lesson anyway. Corvus had put on more comfy clothes for this flying lesson (and to not get his robes ruined) to be more agile while flying. His broom was in quite good condition - probably because he wasn't flying that much. He certainly didn't want to team up with one of the teachers, so he turned to the remaining students instead and tried to look as friendly as possible for him.
Lydia (@ sauvage) really was an excellent athlete, definitely one of Ilvermorny's best. Ivy wasn't a jock at all but admired the girl nonetheless because of her talent and fitness. She had made the right choice in choosing a partner to lead her through the lesson. Ivy high-fived Lydia; her enthusiasm for the game was contagious.
They joined the other pairs of students who were done. Ivy had a good time chatting with some Hogwarts students about Quidditch. The sportier kids were quite insistent that it was superior to Quodpot. Mostly thanks to Lydia, Ivy hadn't made a fool of herself in front of everyone.
(OOC: You're welcome and thank you too. <3)

Lenore watched as the students paired up, some quickly joining with friends and others meeting up for the first time. As the crowd thinned, it was mostly the more nervous-looking students left. They eyed each other as if each hoping that someone else would make the first move. Not too far off was one boy who didn't look like he was shaking in his boots. Corvus was standing as composed as ever and he was smiling in a way that looked to Lenore, more resigned than truly friendly. But she had talked with Corvus before and found him to be more comfortable than most people she encountered. He was quiet but when he spoke he had a good mind and she appreciated that.
Lenore picked up her broom and walked to where the dark-haired boy was standing.
"Fancy pairing up then?" she asked, having to look quite far up since Corvus was tall and she was so short.

Nathaniel wasn't exactly the most skilled when it came to sports, but dang it, he would at least try to look the part. 'Fake it 'til you make it!' applies here. He wore a fitted and protective shell in Slytherin's emerald house colours.
What the hell was Quodpot anyway? Exploding balls? No thanks. He shook his head. Slytherin: ambitious, cunning. He'd partner up with someone who could help him do well in the class. Easy? No. He put a hand on one hip, clutched his (barely used, good as new) broomstick in the other and surveyed the other students. He couldn't pair up last! He needed to find someone to partner with, fast. Lenore and Corvus, Lydia and Ivy, Seb and Zala. Shit. The sportier students were being snapped up and Nathaniel was still stranded on the sidelines.

Being a bit surprised when Lenore walked over to him, he eyed her for a short moment before he nodded. "Sure, why not?", he replied while trying to keep his usual lofty tone down. He was already way taller than her and there was no need to be condescending towards her. He then walked over to the flying instructors to return with one of the practice quods. "So how do are we going to approach this task?", he asked Lenore and handed her the quod in case she wanted to look at it as this was a new sport to her. At least that's what he thought. "Between you and me, though I'm passable at flying, I'm not quite fond of probably being beaten by two dummies.", he added and lowered his voice before saying the following. "The flying instructors will be busy with observing all the students and I'm sure they won't notice if we slow the dummies down with a nice, little spell."
Lenore took the quod from Corvus and looked it over. It was heavier than she had expected and felt slightly warm.
When she heard that Corvus wasn't particularly confident in the sport she felt a touch of disappointment. But his next words were much more appealing. Her gray eyes glinted.
"It can't hurt as long as we don't overdo it." she said quietly, not taking her eyes off of the quod and rotating it as though examining it's structure. "Carpe Retractum wouldn't be a bad idea either. My aim isn't too good."

Corvus eyed her curiously. "It's not that I cannot fly, I just don't enjoy sports.", he felt the need to explain. "Quick, volatile fame. Not for me."
He looked over to the instructors, making sure they were still busy and then looked at the other students shortly. "What are you planning to do with this spell? We could probably use Impedimenta or Confundo to get rid of the dummies for a while."
