good point ;)
I really have to update my blog ObscureJourney and my review site BeingObscure. French speakers can read my reviews here.
so my idea was for a paint option, not "just clothing" or "just a ruffie with a hat and collar." full paint (although I'm totally unopposed to clothing being included, and very much like everyone's ideas about a mix of both, esp Atomic's first response in this thread). not vibrant (though that telenine is cute!), not nostalgic, something unique and carnival-y/circus-y. I gave as an example to expand on, not a limitation lol. Could be a stripey color base with accents of red...idk, I'm not artist, but I look at the delphi carnival map art for ideas...maybe more like stripes and bright primary colors (or could even be slightly faded stripey like )...or you could even go kind of art-nouveau with it, like that park in Melbourne, Australia. I do get that some people have a thing against clowns/mimes/etc, but I'm sure not everyone digs the nightmare potion, or bloodred, or angelic, etc. I think it would be fun to have another different option, and slight variations among the different species. (as an aside- dang, that new ontra= ADORBS! same with Ruffles, omg, love!) edit: I love the idea of a clownfish torrent! XD second edit: playing devil's advocate here, there is more to "carnival" than clowns or carousels...tightrope walkers, fire-eaters, tattooed lady, bearded lady, fortune tellers, jugglers, roust-a-bouts......for some reason now I keep seeing the dilemma as the bearded lady lol!
@ Tiobe Might've been a good idea to include that in the first post! If the only example of your idea provided is an image of dressed up ruffies, of course people are going to continue the discussion based on the only visual example you've provided. Nobody had any idea what you meant under "or something completely different", so we were bouncing ideas around and discussing the pros, cons and odds of each. You know... considering something completely different to the ruffie idea. ;)
I... have no idea what you mean about the park in Melbourne? I'm not from Australia, never been to Australia and Google hasn't been helpful. :( If you're suggesting a pet colour with references to IRL places and things, links and images help a ton in getting your ideas across when words fail.
Back on topic. More under the cut for those curious about my thoughts on the latest addition to the suggestion.
SPOILER (click to toggle)
I imagine a lot of people know there's a lot more to a carnival than the things mentioned. There's a reason I didn't bring those up.
Artists are going to have a really hard time displaying all those human circus jobs and freakshow acts that you've listed on pets as a pet colour without making the pets themselves more anthro/humanlike and adding clothes to them.
And... it would be moving into really uncomfortable territory if the site went with the anthro option and allowed us to canonically own humanoid pets that are lore-wise implied to be as intelligent and as capable as humans. Dressing up a dog-like animal, or owning a living toy are on a very different level compared to what doing this would imply.
Even without that lore bit, when you bring up circus animals you're going to have to dodge real, horrible animal abuse committed by these places. Things like dancing bears, trained elephants, lions, seals and many more, if you're going strictly for that as a pet colour theme instead of other general and more innocent circus, carnival and fairground themes. There's a reason why the Subetapedia has a little nod about tutanis being too large and too intelligent for sport hunting and entertainment in captivity. There's also a reason why Amber clarified that zentus are safe from the Carnival, and why the Subetapedia entry about them mentions that they are not particularly known for being ridden. I'm not even going to touch on the dehumanizing experiences and the terrible things human freakshow acts often went through.
I mean, even the really spiffy clownfish-torrent from the last page started as a torrent-in-a-bag carnival prize idea and I think that says enough.
idk. I might definitely be thinking too far into this, but the more look at the ideas we've all brought up, the more I feel like I'd rather have some more carnival-themed pets sprinkled among the nostalgic ones.
It's a cute idea, I just don't think there'd be enough variety in the theme for a full-blown custom-posed pet colour for over 70 pet species without crossing into other pet colours (nostalgic examples were mentioned earlier, we already have reborn pets for firebreathers and fire-eaters), or dipping into pretty unpleasant territory. :/ We already have some carnival-themed ones in the nostalgic pet pool. It would easily allow the artists to get around the "no clothes for pets" bit and it'd also make sense with nostalgic's theme - carnivals are nostalgic places for some people.
welp, sorry for not having a fully-articulated thesis with a random idea I had and was throwing out there?! :/ I figured "carnival pets" would be an idea and a launching point (citing the item that sparked that idea for me), and my second post was simply clarifying what I had envisioned originally, and giving my input on the ideas that have been bantered around so far (I really do love the idea of clownfish torrent!) Personally, I hate the idea of dancing bears or caged elephants, I am big into animals and not cruelty, that is absolutely not what I'm suggesting at all, and never referenced or alluded to that. Even some of the graveyard pets make me sad tbh (even though I get it's intended playfully and tongue-in-cheek). As for the bagged fish idea, I think there might already be an item on subeta like that? I still personally think it would be a fun option, possibly, to play with the traditional roles of carnival workers, I like the idea of not having a fully anthropomorphic creature, but artistic nods to things like acrobats, tattooed people, tightrope walkers (again focused on jobs, not exploitation). Unique from the nostalgic pets, prolly the same level of difficulty for the artists. As far as subeta canon/mythology, our pets literally can have jobs, up to and including "Director of SAI," and I think the delphi carnival was just added to the options, so...for whatever that's worth? I have literally no idea how to post a link here on the forums; the park in Australia is called Luna Park (had to look it up); was built in the early 1900s and has this fun kind of mix of art nouveau and classic circus elements. I think it's an inspiring aesthetic. Mix of stripes and bright primary colors, exaggerated lines, would probably be a more uniform color/paint, but this would def be closer to the clown/mime vibe
I don't like it. You can easy get an overlay for this.
I would love to see clown/carnival color for pets! I don't think they really need clothes, if anything maybe clown noses/makeup/or funny little hats. I like the idea that you have to obtain the color by doing something at the Carnival, as other colors are tied to places on the map. If we can't get a carnival theme, maybe a beach theme for Delphi?
