This lesson contains a PRACTICAL assignment. Please remain in character. Any out of character comments should be put behind spoiler tags!

"Good evening, students. My name is Professor Noah Crabtree. I am the Potions Professor here at Ilvermorny. I have already assigned your seats. There are five name plates at each table. After you find your name, please sit and take out your cauldron."

Professor Crabtree turned his attention to the black board behind him and began to write Doxy in big letters accompanied by a drawing of one on the board.

"It seems we've had a bit of an infestation of Doxies. Mr. Olsson, our caretaker, has asked for some Doxycide. He has found some Doxies nesting in the draperies of the Great Hall windows and worries there may be more outside near the pitch. We should have more than enough Doxycide to take care of these nasty pests by the end of today."

Professor Crabtree turned his attention back to the class. "Please take out your copy of Book of Potions by Zygmunt Budge and turn to page 110. You'll find the instructions for Doxycide there. To make today's potion you'll need Bundimun, Dragon Liver, Streelers, Cowbane Essence, Hemlock Essence, and Tormentil Tincture. You may find most of these ingredients in the potions cupboard and the rest on the table at the back of the room. On the back table, you'll also find spray bottles to pour the black-colored potion inside. The utensils you'll need to make the Doxycide can be found at the center of your table. You may also find some nose plugs on the table, some people find the smell of Doxycide unbearable."

Professor Crabtree flicked his wand at the blackboard, and the instructions for the potion appeared. "I've written the recipe on the board in case some of you have forgotten your textbooks. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me".

1. Place 5 measures of Bundimun inside mortar and crush using a pestle. 2. Pour 3 measures of Bundimun acid into your cauldron. 3. Place 3 Streelers inside mortar. Grind shells until venom paste formation. 4. Add 2 measures of Streeler venom paste to your cauldron. Stir 5 times, clockwise. 5. Heat to a low temperature for 15 seconds. 6. Pour 1 measure of Dragon Liver into your cauldron. Stir 10 times, anti-clockwise. 7. Wave your wand over the cauldron and leave the mixture to brew (about 2 minutes). 8. Wave your wand again over the cauldron. 9. Pour 3 measures of Hemlock Essence to the cauldron. Stir 4 times, clockwise. 10. Pour 5 measures of Cowbane Essence. 11. Pour 3 measures of Tormentil Tincture to the mixture. Stir 9 times, anti-clockwise. 12. Heat to high temperature for 16 seconds. 13. Wave wand over the cauldron and leave the mixture to brew (about 2 minutes). 14. Wave your wand over the cauldron to complete the potion.
Your assignment today is to brew the Doxycide using Professor Crabtree instructions in character. Be aware that in a real situation, not everyone will brew the potion correctly on the first try. Any effort will be rewarded! All students who participate in brewing the Doxycide will receive 15 Tournament Points. Please note that Professor Crabtree will be observing your progress should you get stuck or have any questions.

This assignment is due by August 9th at 11:59PM.

Eva rushed to potions class in a hurry, I'm sure I'll be the first one to class considering the time, but I can't wait to see what we will brew today she thought, potions was one of her favorite classes after all!

"Hello Professor Crabtree" Eva said with a short wave as she looked for her name plate. Once she stumbled around for a few seconds, she finally found her nameplate on the second table in, nearest to the door; she took her seat and set up her Book of Potions book, turning it to page 110 and listening to Professor Crabtree's instructions all the while.

((OOC: I will brew the potion sometime tomorrow, I have a bit of a time constraint at the moment!)

Teresa arrived at the potions room and took a look inside, it was quite different than Hogwarts room, it had more light. She searched for her name and took a seat to listen to the professor until he was done explaining. "Infestation, how embarrassing." She rolled her eyes, what a way to receive visitors.

Terry looked for the instructions on her textbook and reads them carefully. "I can do this, I'm great a potions, of course I can do this." She said to herself feeling a bit worried about the smell so she took the nose plug to keep it close. She gathered the ingredients from the back and cupboard, and the utensils to begin the work, once again she read the instructions and begin.

 1. Place 5 measures of Bundimun inside mortar and crush using a pestle. "Bundimun, five measures..." She adds them to the mortar and crushes them, so easy so far. 'Piece of cake.' She smiles to herself. "Now pour 3 measures of Bundimun acid into your cauldron." She reads out loud and sees one of the students look at her without amusement but she ignored and continues to add the acid to her cauldron. "Perfect."

Terry reads the next step several times without being sure of what it meant but she wouldn't dare to ask, so she just place 3 Streelers inside her mortar and grinds the shells. "I wonder if I'm doing this right?" After a little work she begins to see a paste formation. "I think I did it." She smiles, of course she could figure it out on her own. "I will now add 2 measures of Streeler venom paste to the cauldron and stir five times." Before she stirs she goes back to read in which direction. "Oh, clockwise! I almost do it wrong." She heard a voice tell her to shut up and she made an angry face but didn't respond.

She heated to a low temperature for 15 seconds and then pour 1 measure of Dragon Liver into the cauldron. Terry cleaned her head with a handkerchief before continuing, the heat made her sweat a bit and she hated it. "Stir 10 times, anti-clockwise." She reads out loud and does it. "It's smelling bad already, ugh." he put the nose plug on and made a face of disgust. "Eww." Still she continued, the smell won't stop her for a perfect score. "Wave your wand over the cauldron and leave the mixture to brew (about 2 minutes)." After reading the step she does it and continues to read as she waits then waved her wand again, nodding after it was done. "Good job Terry."

She then adds the 3 measures of Hemlock Essence to the cauldron and stir four times, clockwise. Once again she use the handkerchief on her forehead and sighs, she wanted to finish already. "Pour five measures of Cowbane Essence and 3 measures of Tormentil Tincture to the mixture. Now stir nine times." She was about to stir clockwise when her eyes spot the words: anti-clockwise and she immediately did the opposite she was intended to do. "Ooff!" She increased the temperature and counted sixteen seconds then lower it back, waved her wand and waited two minutes. "I hope this is right." When the time was done she waved her wand one last time to complete the potion. "Done." She was beaming proudly with the result, the potion looked as it should be - or at least she thought so. "Professor, I'm done. Fifteen points for Ravenclaw! I mean Hogwarts." She giggles as pours the mixture into the spray bottle and put it down. "I hope they get rid of the Doxies, such a pest, and this smell is hideous, not even the nose plugs worked against it. I'm going to need to wash my hair and my uniform will stink." Now all the students were frowning at her. "Sorry." She smiled ashamed of her rant. "But you have to accept it smells bad."

Nathaniel was used to Potions classes: he'd taken plenty of them at Hogwarts. That wasn't to say he was any good at brewing them, however. A Slytherin who couldn't brew potions was pretty rare, but here he was. At home, he'd been partnered with a Slytherin girl in his year who was particularly talented in the subject. As such, he usually had her help him, but here, he'd have to go it alone.

He found his name plate on a table near the front. He cursed under his breath and sat down, turning his attention to the Professor. If he lost the monocle, Crabtree would be kind of cute, he thought to himself as the teacher briefed the class.

Potions, Lesson , Doxycide It was time to turn to the task at hand now, and the pressure was on. The room was bright and he was basically sat beneath Professor Crabtree's nose. Nathaniel glared at the hideous creature drawn in chalk on the blackboard and he wished that the girl from his class at Hogwarts was around.

He'd gathered the ingredients, the book was turned to the right page and then he realised that he'd barely listened to a word the Professor had said. He'd also forgotten the nose plugs. Many of the other students had already started on their assignments and so he began.

He could see Terry () from across the room. The first 7 steps went pretty well, and it didn't smell so bad yet. He'd copied Terry very closely: she seemed to know what she was doing. He felt pretty relieved as he waved his wand over the brewing potion.

He flicked the page over as the dragon liver simmered away in the copper cauldron, releasing a ghastly stench. He closed his nose between his fingers and realised he'd forgotten some ingredients. He didn't remember hearing anything about Lady's Mantle or Ginger Root.

Nathaniel made his way to the store cupboard anyway and withdrew the next couple of ingredients: he couldn't copy Terry now, he was pretty sure she'd finished already.

He followed the final steps: adding rose petals, chopped lady's mantle, a lock of unicorn tail hair and powdered ginger root. Waving his wand a final time he admired his results with confusion: Doxycide was black, but the potion Nathaniel had made was ...magenta.

He glanced over at the potions tome he'd been reading from. Naturally he hadn't flicked across to page 111: a couple of pages had stuck together and he'd brewed a concoction made of half Doxycide and half Beautification Potion. Fantastic.

He decanted the failed liquid into the spray bottle anyway: better submit something than nothing at all, and there wouldn't be time to do it again. Why hadn't he read the blackboard properly? And why couldn't he remember the name of the Slytherin girl who always helped him back at Hogwarts?

He handed his potion to the cute Professor, cheeks flushed red, trying to ignore the quiet sniggers coming from some of the other students in the class.

Outfit Not FoundCarlos grinned when he heard about today's task. Potions had always been his best and favorite subject, he even was part of the Potions Club at school, so making Doxycide should be no problem for him.

Once he had prepared his table and gathered his ingredients he started by placing five measures of Bundimun inside his mortar and crushing it. He then added three measures of Bundimun acid to his cauldron. The next step was to put three Streelers into the mortar and then to grind the shells until a venomous paste had formed. Two measures of the paste then had to be added to the cauldron and the mixture to be stirred clockwise for five times.

"Perfect so far", Carlos thought but of course that was just the beginning. The next step required heating the mixture to low temperature for fifteen seconds, then afterwards one measure of dragon liver had to be added to the cauldron and everything stirred anti-clockwise ten times. Carlos closely followed the instructions, knowing that every mistake could end in a ruined puddle of ingredients.

After ten times of stirring he waved his wand over the cauldron and let the mixture brew for about two minutes. Once the time was up another wave of the wand took the Ilvermorny student to the next step. He added three measures of Hemlock essence to the cauldron and stirred everything clockwise for four times. Then it was time for five measures of Cowbane Essence and three measures of Tormentil Tincture. Both found their way into the cauldron and the mixture got stirred nine times and anti-clockwise.

Ignoring the horrible stench of the mixture Carlos then heated it to high temperature for exactly sixteen seconds, waved his wand over it and let it afterwards brew for about two minutes. When he then waved his wand over the cauldron for one last time in order to finish the potion a little smile appeared on his face. "That was easy." he said to himself, decantered the potion into a spray bottle and handed it over to Professor Crabtree.

"If only every subject at school was so enjoyable and interesting..." Carlos thought and started cleaning up his desk and tools. When he noticed a boy from Hogwarts (@ Alex) handing over a completely ruined potion to the Professor he once again grinned but it wasn't a spiteful grin. "I bet he feels just like me when I have to hand over essays" Carlos mumbled and gave Nathaniel an encouraging nod. That some other students now even started to make fun of the poor boy he couldn't understand. "Yeah...because everyone of you is just perfect and never makes any mistake." he thought and decided it was better to stay focused on his actions to prevent saying (or even doing) something he'd for sure regret later.

Evalyn Ridgewell, Ilvermorny After listening to Professor Crabtree’s instructions, Eva went to the potions cupboard and grabbed the ingredients she needed. Once she returned to her table, she placed the nose plugs on her nostrils, just to be safe.

First things first Eva thought to herself as she grabbed the Bundimum and placed five measures into the mortar and crushed them. After the Bundimum were crushed, she poured 3 measures of the Bundimum acid into her cauldron.

Next up, Streelers, she thought as she placed 3 Streelers into her mortar and grinded up the shells until a nice paste formed, which took her a little longer than expected. Once she felt her paste was perfect, she added 2 measures of the Streeler venom into her cauldron, stirring the mixture 5 times in a clockwise fashion.

Now it is time to heat the cauldron up, looking down at the cauldron, Eva got her wand ready to start the timer as soon as she turned the heat to low. With perfect precision, she began heating and timing at the same time – right as 15 seconds was up, she shut the heat off.

She then added 1 measure of dragon liver into her cauldron, stirring everything around 10 times in an anti-clockwise fashion. Waving her wand over the cauldron, she let the mixture brew for two minutes time and then waved her wand over the cauldron again.

Eva got the Hemlock Essence from her pile of ingredients and poured 3 measures into the cauldron, stirring it 4 times in a clockwise fashion. Then, she poured 5 measures of Cowbane Essence and 3 measures of Tormentil Tincture into the potion, stirring it 9 times in an anti-clockwise fashion.

Time to heat the cauldron again, using her wand as she did last time, Eva turned the heat up to high and began the timer for 16 seconds – once the 16 seconds were up, she waved her wand over the cauldron for approximately two minutes and then she waved her wand for the final time.

Looking into the cauldron, she was quite proud of her work. She often got lost in potion making and would forget that there was whole group of people attempting to brew the same potion. I should really learn to be a little more involved with whats going on around me she thought as she looked around the room, looking at her classmates busy brewing the potion.

While waiting for Professor Crabtree to come check her potion, Eva grabbed a spray bottle from the back table and returned to her seat.

Sebakhin slipped into the potions classroom and found his seat. Halfway listening to the lesson he took an extended look around the room. It was very different from his school, the walls were different stone and there were way bigger windows. Probably because they didn’t have to worry about sand blowing in and messing up their mixtures. The view however made it difficult for him not to daydream and wish he were outside. Truly a double edged sword.

Shifting his attention back to the table, Seb realized the Professor had written instructions on the board. Hastily he bent and hoisted his cauldron into his workspace with a slight grunt. After looking over the list of ingredients, Seb wandered toward the table at the back of the room and subsequently into the potions cupboard in order to gather the required supplies. Upon returning to his table he unloaded his armful of items haphazardly. But before he could start he began to organize the ingredients arranging them in size order. Not for any real reason other than satisfying his own mild OCD.

mixing the potion First thing was first. Seb reached for the mortal and pestle, measured the appropriate amount of Bundimun, and set to crushing it. Any bits that flew out he was quick to grab and place back inside. Once everything was satisfactorily crushed, Seb poured three measures of the produced acid into the cauldron careful to avoid getting any splatter on his skin. Before moving on to the Streelers, Seb took care to clean the mortar and pestle thoroughly and dry it completely. If his Alchemy lessons had taught him anything it was that keeping your tools and workspace meticulous was of the utmost importance.

Once the mortar had been washed and dried he proceeded with the instructions. Three measures of Streelers were dropped inside and crushed. The resulting smell was truly disgusting and Seb had to step back to avoid gagging. Deciding between a set of nose plugs that had been used by countless persons, or just holding his breath was an easy decision. Even if the breath holding sort of made him dizzy. Lifting his shirt over his nose helped somewhat, and he disregarded the giggles from the people at his table. Once the Streelers had oozed enough pungent venom, Seb took two measures of the paste and dropped it into his cauldron. With no time to waste he pushed the mortar as far away as wasn’t rude to his tablemates, and stirred the mixture five times in a clockwise motion. Now was the tricky part. Igniting the flame beneath his cauldron he had a hard time gauging what was considered low temp. Shrugging it off he watched the clock and readied his next ingredient.

After fifteen seconds or so Seb tilted one measure of Dragon Liver into the cauldron and stirred ten times counterclockwise. Waving his wand over the cauldron once the stirring was complete, he stepped back and took a deep breath of fresh air. Although with so many cauldrons cooking the smelly potion the air was hardly considered fresh. Seb had to excuse himself to the hall while his potion brewed for two minutes.

Reluctantly Seb returned to his cauldron just in time to clean off his measuring spoon and continue the process. Waving his wand over the mixture as per instructions, he then measured the Hemlock Essence and dumped it inside, then stirred four times clockwise. After wiping off his measuring spoon he took five measures of Cowbane Essence, it smelled possibly worse than the Streelers venom, and added it before once again wiping off his measure.

Next he added three measures of Tormentil Tincture and dumped it inside. The resulting smell was surprisingly diluted compared to what had been brewing previous. Perhaps the tincture was added to spare the potion maker a bit of sanity. Seb stirred the cauldron nine times counterclockwise and turned up the heat. Counting in his head this time instead of watching the clock, after sixteen seconds he waved his wand over the cauldron and let the potion brew for the required two minutes.

During this time he took his mortar and pestle and his measures and cleaned them out and set them to dry. Potion making was a lot like cooking, if you cleaned as you went there was less mess to worry about when it was all said and done. Looking around the room the other students seemed to be having mixed results. Although honestly the smell in here was making it hard for Seb to care if his was successful or not, he just wanted to get it over with and take a shower.

When the time was up he extinguished the flame beneath his cauldron, waved his wand over it and let it cool before attempting to dump it into the spray bottle. The liquid was black, but when held up to the light it looked somewhat purple. Seb rolled his eyes, more-so at himself, and delivered the mixture to the Professor at the head of the classroom.

Corvus Farlan Montgomery, Horned Serpent, Ilvermorny Corvus frowned a bit upon the task. He was good at potions and liked the subject, but making the students take care of an infestation? Even if it was only brewing some doxycide. The potion itself wasn't much of a challenge, but then a thought crossed his mind. Perhaps Professor Crabtree chose an easy potion like this to get an idea of the level of knowledge of the Hogwarts and 4A students. It was somehow entertaining.

Amused, he opened his book on page 110 and took a quick glance at the ingredients before getting them from the table. He chuckled a bit upon the professor's mention of nose plugs, before finally concentrating on the receipt. It was easy for Corvus to shield himself from the rest of the class. He knew what he was doing and he honestly couldn't care less about the other students and their work. Well, unless somebody's potion exploded and he would be hit by the liquids. Shaking off these useless somewhat brooding thoughts, he finally took his mortar and pestle to crush 5 measures of Bundimun. What a disgusting creature, Corvus thought to himself and crushed it a bit more forcefully than necessary. He quickly glanced at the receipt and then poured 3 measures of the Bundimun acid into his cauldron. Next was crushing 3 Streelers into a venom paste. How ironic that you use pests to get something that helps you get rid of another pest., Corvus thought and placed 2 measures of the Streeler venom paste in his cauldron, then stirred it 5 times clockwise before heating it up carefully for 15 seconds. Good thing that he got the super precise magical clock for potion making because just one second more or less could destroy the whole thing.

He took the dragon liver next. Well, this one is definitely not a pest, he reflected and placed it in the cauldron, now stirring it 10 times anti-clockwise. He waved his red oak wand in an elegant way over the cauldron and while waiting for the 2 minutes to pass, he took a quick glance over the classroom. Some students were using the nose plugs. Corvus didn't like bad smells either, but he knew how important it was to be able to smell the potion while making it. The smell could tell you a lot whether you were doing it correctly or not.

Giving his attention to the potion after 2 minutes had passed, he waved his wand again over the brew. The next steps were pretty easy. Hemlock Essence, 3 measures. Stir it 4 times, clockwise. Check., he thought and smiled. At least no disgusting smelly creature stuff this time but some plants. Corvus took 5 measures of Cowbane Essence and added them to the cauldron, before continuing by adding 3 measures of Tormentil Tincture. Stirring it for 9 times anti-clockwise, he was eyeing his progress carefully. Everything looked good so far. Carefully heating it up for 16 seconds, this time to a much higher temperature, he risked another glance to the book. It seemed like he was almost done. Pleased, he waved his wand again. Now he would have to wait 2 minutes again. This time, he reflected a bit about the potion. It was actually a fast-brewing potion. Thinking about that, a thought crossed his mind. Didn't the professor mention that they would have more than enough Doxycide to take care of the infestation by the end of the lesson?, he thought and narrowed his eyes, hopefully nobody expects the students to spray the Doxycide. He nearly had missed the time frame of 2 minutes, but quickly waved his wand and looked into the cauldron, relieved to see that it was perfectly black. Corvus took one of the spray bottles and poured his potion into it. No, he would certainly not take care of the infestation. That was maintenance stuff and therefore the job of a groundskeeper. Eyeing the black liquid, he wondered if he should drop Elizabeth a letter, asking her if Hogwarts students were required to brew potions against pests in the castle as well. He hoped that not even one of the doxies had managed to escape into the Horned Serpent common rooms - then he would have to take care of these disgusting creatures by himself. Corvus' thoughts were interrupted by Teresa() exclaiming she had finished her potion. Huh, he thought and raised an eyebrow, didn't know she was so full of herself. He shrugged lightly. On the other hand, he didn't know her and honestly didn't care. After cleaning his table, he took his seat again, then placed the spray bottle in front of him to signalize he was done, too.

(OOC, No offense . Corvus just doesn't like it when others deliver perfect results as well. xd And he's not a people person. )

Niamh walked into the potions room and looked around. It wasn't quite the same as 4A's potions room, but it was similar enough for her to feel comfortable and hopefully be able to concentrate on the task. Eventually she found her name at a table, put her cauldron on the desk, and sat down. "Eww, Doxies," she muttered, picking a nose plug from the table. Looking at the nose plug, she pulled out her wand, pointed it at the plug and muttered "Scourgify". Niamh was pleased that the nose plug now looked clean enough to use. Re-reading the instructions, she decided it would be safer to just work on one line at a time, as she didn't want to make 4A seem bad by not being able to make a successful potion. Trying to avoid reading the instructions out loud, as she knew that was quite annoying for everyone else, she picked up the Bundium and placed 5 measures into the mortar. Crushing it as much as she could, she looked at the second line and wondered if what she'd just crushed was in fact the Bundium acid, or if it was another ingredient on the table. She couldn't see any further mention of Bundium, and decided that what was in the mortar must be the acid. Carefully pouring three measures into her cauldron, she looked at the third line. "Good job we've got nose plugs," she muttered as she placed three Streelers into the mortar and ground them. Maybe one day she would learn the charm to make foul smells more pleasant, but the cleaning charm was the limit to her household charm skills at the moment. Niamh added two measures of the venom paste into her cauldron, and stirred 5 times clockwise. "Ok, next line," she muttered checking the board again. Picking up the container of dragon liver, she poured one measure into her cauldron and stirred anticlockwise ten times. Waving her wand over the cauldron, she read through the next line while counting down two minutes. Wondering if there was a specific way to wave her wand over the cauldron, she looked around the room and noticed that everyone was at totally different stages of making the same potion... although some looked like they were making something entirely different. Waving her wand, she then poured three measures of Hemlock Essence into the cauldron and stirred 4 times anticlockwise. Picking up the Cowbane Essence, she poured 5 measures into the cauldron, followed by 3 measures of the Tormentil Tincture. Double checking the board, she stirred the mixture nine times anti clockwise, before heating the cauldron to a high temperature for 16 seconds. The mixture looked a little thicker than she was expecting, but Niamh thought it might thin down during the last brew, so waved her wand and counted down another 2 minutes, Waving her wand over the potion, she was dismayed to see that while it'd changed colour to black, it still wasn't a sprayable consistency.... in fact, it looked more like treacle, although Niamh felt it smelt more like tar. Grabbing a ladle from the table, she spooned the gloopy mixture into the bottle and took it to Professor Crabtree, hoping that it might still give 4A some points.

Kai Musa, 4A Kai glanced at the instructions again as he started crushing the Bundimun. "Five measures of B-mun, check," he thought aloud to himself. "Crushed it like I'm crushing life, check." The boy set the pestle aside and started measuring the Bundimun acid and adding it into his cauldron. "Feed cauldron some delicious acid, check."

Kai then started grinding up Streelers until they were paste. "Feed delicious venom to cauldron..." he started as he he put two measures into his cauldron. "Check!," he bit his lips as he gazed to the instructions again briefly. "Stir. Okay, easy peasy lemon squeezy." He began stirring his pot clockwise, counting down five stirs. Immediately, he heated the ingredients on a low heat for a quarter minute. He used a stopwatch to help him time. A measure of Dragon Liver was added to the mix afterwards and again, the boy stirred. This time, he stirred ten times in the opposite direction. "Double, double toil and trouble. Fire burn, and cauldron bubble," he chanted as he waved his wand over the cauldron. Kai took the brief break opportunity to plug up his nose as the smell from all the Doxycide being brewed around him was starting to make him nauseous.

Kai spent the next two minutes just standing over his cauldron, hopping in place with the tips of his toes remaining glued to the floor. After the two minutes were up, he waved his wand over the cauldron again. The next couple of steps were pretty repeats with different ingredients and variations in stir count and direction. Once, the Hemlock Essence, Cowbane Essence, and Tormentil Tincture steps were done, a high temperature was applied. Kai timed the heat for a quarter of minute before waving his wand over the mixture. "Ugh, another two minutes," he sighed as he reluctantly waited for mix to brew. When the time was up, he waved his wand over the pot and grinned. Despite being one second short on one of the heating steps, the results was still pretty black and stray-able. Of course, the real question was how effective it was.

Faye Robinson - Ilvermorny Potions was one of Faye's favorite classes, so she was eager to get started on her potion. She put on the noseplugs, and went to gather her ingredients. Once she had all her ingredients, she glanced around at the other students to see how they were proceeding with their potions.

Taking a deep breath, she began. First she crushed up the bundimum using her mortar and pestle, and then poured three measures of the acid into the cauldron. The potion bubbled and let off a bit of steam. She bit her lip, unsure if this was the correct response, and glanced around at the other student's cauldrons again to see where they were at. Next, she crushed up three streelers into a venom paste and added those to the cauldron. She stirred the potion five times, clockwise, and turned the heat down to watch it simmer for 15 seconds.

The next step was simple; she added 1 measure of dragon liver to the cauldron and stirred it ten times counter-clockwise. She then carefully waved her wand over the cauldron and let the mixture brew for two minutes. Again, she glanced around at the other students to see how her potion was progressing in comparison. Some seemed to be having more success than others. After the two minutes were up she waved her wand over the cauldron once again.

She added the remaining ingredients and did all the appropriate stirring. Finally, she heated up the cauldron for sixteen seconds, waved her wand and allowed the mixture to brew for a final two minutes. After the final wave of the wand, she carefully glanced into the cauldron. The mixture was a dark black and rather thick, but it seemed to be about right. Grabbing a couple spray bottles, she carefully poured her mixture into them.

She breathed a sigh of relief and brushed her frizzed up hair back from her forehead. and fanned her face with her hand. Collapsing back into the stool at her station, she smiled slightly and waited for the class to be over.

SPOILER (click to toggle) Zack listened to the professor closely. After that, he went to get his ingredients and put everything in a row at close reach. The first step was to place 5 measures of Bundimun inside mortar and crush it using a pestle. That´s what Zack did. Then he poured 3 measures of Bundimun acid into the cauldron. Then he placed 3 steetlers in the mortar. Next, he grid everything until the venom paste formed. Zack added 2 measures of venom into the cauldron and stirred 5 times clockwise. Next, he heated the cauldron for 15 seconds on low heat. He poured 1 measure of Dragon Liver into the cauldron and stirred 10 times, anti-clockwise. He waved his wand over the cauldron and left the mixture to brew for about 2 minutes. Next he waved his wand again over the cauldron again. Then he poured 3 measures of Hemlock Essence to the cauldron and stirred 4 times, anti-clockwise. The cauldron started to fume. Zack frowned at it and reread the passaged. His stirred anti-clockwise but the book said to stir clockwise. What a waste.

Ivy Lockwood, Ilvermorny "Sorry Professor!" Ivy slid into her assigned seat, late as usual. Most of her professors didn't seem to mind too much as long as she stayed within the 5-minute past mark. She just wasn't a punctual person by nature and the occasional detention for tardiness didn't faze her.

Ivy surveyed the room, more interested in the people in it than the lesson. She wasn't bad at Potions but she found it extremely tedious to have to be so exact about everything. There were lots of fun looking girls and cute boys, especially the ones from the visiting schools. "I'll just get this dumb potion over with as quickly as possible and then I'll socialize," she planned, grinning to herself.

Before she began, she tied up her hair and pinned back her bangs. Then she went to the potions cupboard for ingredients, making sure to smile at anyone who caught her eye as she passed. "Ugh, it really does reek in here." She donned a pair of nose plugs and got to work, grateful to be near the blackboard.

Ivy haphazardly crushed the 5 measures of Bundimun with her mortar and pestle. Then, she poured 3 measures of Bundimun Acid into her cauldron. She gingerly placed 3 Streelers inside the mortar and ground their shells into paste. Ivy took 2 measures of the paste and dropped it into the cauldron, stirring 5 times clockwise. The whole mess had to be heated for 15 seconds. She paused and wiped her brow, bored already. "There are so many steps left," she thought unhappily.

Ivy poured in a measure of Dragon Liver, watching it splash. She stirred 10 times counterclockwise, waved her wand, and timed the mixture to brew for 2 minutes. A couple of handsome boys with mischief in their eyes winked at her when they noticed her checking them out. "I'll bet these Alexandrian and Hogwarts guys would love to help a girl out," Ivy thought devilishly. She deliberately didn't wave her wand over her potion and continued with adding the 3 measures of Hemlock Essence. Now the potion got 4 clockwise stirs.

"Home stretch," Ivy thought, glancing up at the board. In went 5 measures of Cowbane Essence and 3 of Tormentil Tincture. She hurriedly gave the mixture 9 counterclockwise stirs. Ivy heated up the potion for 16 seconds, waved her wand over the cauldron, and let it brew for another 2 minutes. She didn't wave her wand over the potion again, for good measure. On her way to the back of the room for a spray bottle she asked, "Could someone help me? I'd like to know what went wrong with my potion after I hand it in." Ivy ladled her congealing effort into the bottle and gave it to Professor Crabtree. "Mine is lime green, lumpy, and smells like burnt sugar," she announced once she was back among her peers. "I'm Ivy by the way," she said, smiling and flicking her hair prettily.

Ebele Nia Zuberi - 4A

Ebele looked around the classroom nervously and found her nameplate by a dark black, well used cauldron. Taking her seat, Ebele looked around the table and smiled at her classmates. "This s my first attempts at formal potion creating," she whispered in confidence to those who would be sharing her cauldron with her.

Ebele looked up in surprise at the description of Doxies. She'd never heard of them before, being that she had live in Africa her entire life. They had creatures that ate holes in clothing and straw, but she hadn't ever created a potion for getting rid of them before. Usually they just set traps or charmed them away with protection spells.

Everyone around her got up and started searching for the ingredients in the cupboard at the back of the classroom. However, Ebele stayed behind, totally engrossed in reading the pages detailing Doxies and Doxicide in her textbook. "Fascinating," she murmured as she flipped the page.

After getting the ingredients and all her supplies, Ebele started working on creating the potion in her cauldron. She traced her finger down the list of steps to making the potion and carefully made sure she did not miss a step.

Once she got to the heating stage she stepped back as the smell bubbling up in the cauldron was almost too much to bare. She slowly waved her wand over the cauldron for two minutes as it brewed. When she thought enough time had elapsed she removed it from the heat and waved her wand once more. With a flick of her wrist she looked down into the pot and watched as the brew fell into a simmer.

The brew began to change color as it cooled closer to room temperature. Suddenly, the cauldron burst into a frothy foam of dark purple and red. The foamy mixture poured over the sides of the black pot and over the table. Ebele looked around the room with panic stricken wide eyes. The goop began hissing and turning deep ocean blue as it fell onto the floor in sticky slimy heaps.

As the professor came to her table, Ebeel looked up with a sad expression on her face. "I'm so sorry Professor Crabtree. I am so sorry!" She repeated her apologies as she stepped further backwards, trying to avoid the ever growing pile of dark blue goo.

A few of her classmates snickered behind their books as Ebele blushed deeply from embarrassment. Everyone in the classroom could have created disastrous brews, but it would not have lessened Ebele's feeling of shame. She tried to think about what had gone wrong and mentally went over each step in her head before giving up. She had followed the recipe exactly. With a long sigh she watched as Professor Crabtree tried to halt the horrendous potion she'd concocted.

Ceeli groaned inwardly a bit.

Shoot, what's a measure? Is it...one of...these things? She pulled out a cup about the size of her palms together, but nestled inside it was a smaller cup about a third of the other's size. Darn. Uh. Ceeli looked around a bit anxiously to see what others were doing. But if she picked one kind of cup or the other, she'd basically just need to make sure the proportions were right, right?

As Ceeli uncorked the Bundimun, she inhaled and almost vomited, feeling bile creep up her throat. She immediately re-sealed the bottle. Sheesh. She was gonna need those nose plugs NOW...and the brewing hadn't even started yet.

Ceeli tipped the Bundimun out and it oozed its way into her measuring cup, bubbling slightly. Bundimun fed on dirt, she knew, so she'd made sure to clean the cups thoroughly. But when she poured the Bundimun into her cauldron post-crushing, it immediately ate its way straight through the bottom of the cauldron and through the table. Drat. Guess that isn't clean.

Lenore Addlebourne - Hogwarts Lenore found her way into the potions classroom and looked around, taking in her new surroundings. It's not a bad room, she thought to herself, I doubt I'll do any better here than at home though. Lenore had never been good at Potions. Wandwork was her specialty. She could feel the magic in wandwork. Potions was so...detached.

When Professor Crabtree said that there would be five students to a table, Lenore cringed. It wasn't that she cared if people saw that she was lousy at portion brewing, she just hated working so near to others. It was hard to concentrate when others were talking and moving around her. She sighed quietly and went to find her nameplate. It was at the table in the center of the room, about as far from her comfort zone as possible. She momentarily considered asking to change tables but decided it wouldn't do much good. She would be crowded anyway. Resignedly, she opened her bag and pulled out her cauldron and her copy of Book of Potions, both of which fit neatly in the palm of her hand. She set them down on the table and waved her wand, causing them to grow to their original size.

Doxycide, that stuff smells bad. Lenore quickly performed a charm on her hair and robes to keep the scent from seeping in. She repeated this on her bag and book then added a quick wave of her wand toward her face to dull her own sense of smell. Gathering the required items was simple, but now came the hard part. Settling in, she got to work.

All went fine until she got to step 5: Heat to a low temperature for 15 seconds. What does low temperature mean? she wondered. Why can't the instructions be more specific? Lost in wondering about the temperature, she had forgotten to count the seconds. Had it been 15? 20? Quickly she put out the flames under her cauldron with her wand. There was steam rising from the cauldron already and she wasn't sure if that was a good sign. Lenore added her dragon liver and stirred 10 times counter-clockwise. At least I can get that part right. She knew from experience, however, that once a step was done wrong, it didn't matter if you got the rest right. The potion wouldn't be perfect. She continued on, following the instructions until it cam time to add the cowbane essence. She wasn't expecting it to come out so fast and far more than the required amount poured into her cauldron. With a small squeak she jumped back. The entire potion had tuned violet and begun to froth madly. It spilled over the sides and made it's way across the table toward the other student's cauldrons. Moving instinctively, Lenore grabbed her wand and said 'Evanesco'. The botched potion vanished instantly.

Lenore looked at her empty cauldron and was glad that her bag was unharmed. Her book seemed to have taken on a slight purple tinge where the potion had touched it. Oh well, she thought, I've had worse.

Zala Tulasi - 4A

Zala tied her green apron around her waist and sat down at the table on the far right. Her name was on the list for that table though it seemed like she wouldn’t share the table with any of her classmates. She sighed softly and listened to the instructions. The doxycide shouldn’t be too difficult for her to brew. In the past she had to brew it for a potions assignment, before her assessment and raising to Skilled ranking. Back then she had had trouble and with great effort managed to make the potion. If the current assignment had been issued a year ago she’d still have trouble, but now she felt confident she wouldn’t repeat mistakes.

Zala opened her copy of the book of potions to the correct page and copied a shortened version of the instructions to a small piece of paper. Then she wrote down the ingredients on a second piece and placed her quill in the book, using it as a makeshift bookmark. She hurried to the stock table and cabinet to find her set of ingredients as well as a few bottles. Setting everything down in the correct order on her table she began brewing the potion.

With practised hands she placed the Bundimun measures in her mortar and quickly crushed it. She poured the 3 measurements of acid into her cauldron and cleaned her mortar of the excess Bundimun pulp. With her left hand she added the 3 Steelers to the clean mortar and crushed the shells. Once satisfied she added 2 measurements of the paste to her cauldron and stirred. Starting at the 12 o'clock position she counted 5 clockwise rotations and stopped. Now Zala had to heat the cauldron correctly. This was one of her struggles in the past. Too cold and the Bundimun juices and Streeler paste wouldn’t mix. Too hot and they’d burn, losing their effects. Focussing on the task she murmured the numbers counting to 15 seconds out loud whilst heating the pot. At 15 she immediately stopped and checked her cauldron. The liquid looked glossy and uniform so she assumed everything had gone well so far. She sighed in relief and moved on.

Zala wrote down a counter for one of the next steps and crossed out the instructions she had completed. She poured a single measurement of Dragon Liver into the pot and stirred counter-clockwise starting from the 12 o’clock position again. She counted to 10 and then waved her wand over the cauldron. Immediately after she tapped the timer and watched it count down the 2 minutes. Right when the timer hid zero she waved her wand again over the cauldron and took a step back. Zala was halfway done brewing the potion and soon the smell coming from the liquid would become unbearable.

She plugged her nose after inhaling deeply and slowly breathed out. She wiped some sweat of her brow and continued onto the second half of the instructions. She crossed them out one by one on her list as she completed the steps, pouring measurements, stirring and heating the pot. Finally her timer had reached zero again and she waved her wand over the potion to finish it. She poured half in a round spritz bottle and the other half in a rectangular bottle. Tightly twisting the tops on the potion was ready for use. Zala handed both bottles to professor Crabtree at the front of the classroom and quickly turned around to leave. Once outside the room she unplugged her nose and all but ran out to the garden to clear her airways. With the entire classroom full of Doxycide in various phases of completion even the plugs couldn’t keep the stink out. She felt like she could taste the smell on her tongue and left to find something to rinse her mouth with.

Rain Stormwing, Ilvermorny, Thunderbird Rain entered the classroom quietly and took the seat marked with her name. She listened carefully to what Professor Crabtree had to say, then took out her book and cauldron and set them on the table. She sighed, potions wasn't her strongest subject, and she didn't want to look silly in front of the students from Hogwarts and 4A. "I will have to be extra careful," she said to herself. After the professor had finished his explanation, Rain got up and gathered her ingredients, a spray bottle, and a nose plug, just in case. After placing all of the ingredients on her table, she put on the nose plug and opened her book to the page with the instructions for Doxycide:

 1. Place 5 measures of Bundimun inside mortar and crush using a pestle. Rain measured out the Bundimun and poured it into the mortar. She crushed it carefully to extrude the acid, then moved on to the next step.
 2. Pour 3 measures of Bundimun acid into your cauldron. Rain measured out the acid, and added it to her cauldron, then read on.
 3. Place 3 Streelers inside mortar. Grind shells until venom paste formation. Rain counted out 3 Streelers and ground them thoroughly in her mortar, until the venom paste formed. She read the next step.
 4. Add 2 measures of Streeler venom paste to your cauldron. Stir 5 times, clockwise. Carefully measuring the Streeler venom paste, Rain added it to her cauldron. Before stirring, she double-checked the direction she was supposed to stir the mixture. Then, she stirred the mixture 5 times clockwise.
 5. Heat to a low temperature for 15 seconds. Rain turned the heat to low, and counted 15 seconds, then continued to read the directions.
 6. Pour 1 measure of Dragon Liver into your cauldron. Stir 10 times, anti-clockwise. Measuring out the Dragon Liver, Rain poured it into her cauldron. Again, she double checked the directions, and stirred the potion 10 times anti-clockwise.
 7. Wave your wand over the cauldron and leave the mixture to brew (about 2 minutes). Rain waved her wand over the cauldron, and timed the 2 minutes exactly while the mixture brewed.
 8. Wave your wand again over the cauldron. She checked the directions again, then waved her wand over the cauldron.
 9. Pour 3 measures of Hemlock Essence to the cauldron. Stir 4 times, clockwise. Rain then measured out the Hemlock Essence, and poured it into her cauldron. She re-read the directions, and stirred it clockwise 4 times.
 10. Pour 5 measures of Cowbane Essence. Measuring out the Cowbane Essence, Rain poured it into her cauldron.
 11. Pour 3 measures of Tormentil Tincture to the mixture. Stir 9 times, anti-clockwise. She read over step number 11, then measured the Tormentil Tincture out and poured it into the cauldron. Re-checking the number and direction, she stirred the potion 9 times anti-clockwise.
 12. Heat to high temperature for 16 seconds. Rain turned the heat up to high, then timed 16 seconds exactly. She then moved on to the second to last step.
 13. Wave wand over the cauldron and leave the mixture to brew (about 2 minutes). Waving her wand over the mixture, Rain timed 2 minutes and read the last step.
 14. Wave your wand over the cauldron to complete the potion. Rain waved her wand over the cauldron, then peeked at her potion. It was the black color that Professor Crabtree had described at the start of the lesson. "Brilliant!" she beamed, and poured the mixture into her spray bottle. She deftly removed her nose plug, then took the spray bottle containing her potion up to the professor's desk and placed it there. "At least I don't think I made a fool of myself," she thought, as she left the class.
