In terms of brand name coffee, I love Community's dark roast coffee ! I don't like chicory with my coffee blend so I'm careful not to buy anything with it in there. I do think that Folger's Black Silk is almost as good as Community coffee, hehe, and sometimes it's cheaper to buy Folgers than Community. I don't usually dress my coffee with anything too fancy -- no hazelnut, or vanilla bean; just cream & sugar!
I agree with that cold brew coffee is amazing. I used to wonder how you could run out of cold coffee at a cafe, but now that I've made it myself, I completely understand.
A cold brew carafe is almost like a french press, or one of those fancy water infuser things. Basically you fill the filter bit with quite a bit of ground coffee and then the carafe itself with water and store it overnight in the fridge. In the morning/afternoon, you squeeze out all the water from the coffee grounds and you have a nice carafe full of cold-brewed coffee! It does make the coffee a bit naturally sweeter for some reason. I'm no Alton Brown so I can't explain the science, but I can say it's quite tasty.

Haha, yeah, people never understood that cold brew is entirely different from cold coffee! I mean, we could ice any beverage you could order, from fresh tea to a latte, but cold versions of our standard coffees were yesterday's brew, kept in the fridge (so a limited quantity), and cold brew is a special rarity... 24 hours of brewing is a long time. Can't just whip up some more if we get short! And our cold brew was one of the lesser known things on our menu, so it was impossible to tell how much we were going to go through...
They're not always like a french press, though... Ours was more like a pitcher shaped funnel. The bottom had a rubber cork, then you added a special cotton filter, then layered a careful ratio of the coarse ground coffee and purified water, before covering the top of the funnel. Then, you let it sit for the 24 hours. Finally, you remove the cork, letting the coffee drain through the cotton filter into the special pitcher that came with the setup. It took another couple hours to drain through. Then, there was a lid for the pitcher, so we could store the coffee in the fridge for up to a couple of days.
But yeah, because it brews so slowly, a lot of the more bitter chemicals in the beans never make it into the coffee, so it is much smoother, while still containing the strong flavor of the coffee. It's amazing stuff...

oh, thank you for explaining it guys! i dislike the french press for some reason - i think they use too much water? i like a more intense taste/ flavor.. ? HOWEVER, this cold brew sounds interesting enough to try at least once. i have nothing to lose to try it out with regular grounded coffee [when i get around to buying some]. of course it will not be the same as the stuff you guys had, but could be interesting enough. :D
I really have to update my blog ObscureJourney and my review site BeingObscure. French speakers can read my reviews here.
Was just looking for a picture or something, and I found this site, that lists the pros and cons of some of the systems... I think number 2 is the system our coffee shop used, actually..

The site also has a brief explanation of why the coffee tastes so different made this way... :O

Good morning, y'all! , I'm still sipping on a regular cuppa Joe, so don't feel like you need a cold brew in your life unless it's a booze!

I make mine with a French Press most of the time, and do cold brew in the summer. I blend French Roast with Pinon (a local flavor that's common in my state) for a lovely mix.

For home coffee, I drink Nabob 1896 Tradition. Throw in some cream (18% is my top pick but also costs more, so I usually just settle for the 10% aka "half and half" kind), some sugar, good to go. If I'm out of Nabob and it's not on sale, I will drink Melitta Traditional Medium Roast. It's a close second.
If I'm ordering coffee from Starbucks or whatever, I like a simple vanilla latte.
I've only ever tried two different things. One (which I do like) is Starbucks Double Chocolaty Chip Frappuchino. The other was one of those bottled Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha that I had gotten through a vending machine one time.
I'm not a coffee drinker by any means. I don't like the taste of it lol. These two drinks I can handle because the chocolate overpowers the coffee/frappuchino part. Everyone said I'd like coffee when I got older but lol I still don't like it. I don't even drink tea xD
Coffee! What a fun thread.
I love cold brew! if you're interested in making it, you don't need anything special to brew it in so you'd be able to make it even without having any space to store anything in the kitchen. I make my cold brew in a tall plastic container with a lid on it, on the counter, not in the refrigerator. After brewing it 24 hours I strain it through cheesecloth that is placed in a small strainer (one you might dust powdered sugar on a baked treat with) into a mason jar and put it in the fridge. My favorite way to use this concentrate is about equal portions of the coffee and dark chocolate almond milk. It makes a delicious iced mocha.
When drinking hot coffee I use a single serve coffee maker with coffee I order online from Door County Coffee. They have lots of flavors and some non flavored. After brewing I just use some vanilla creamer to sweeten it and make it creamy. Yum!
COFFEE IS LOVE. COFFEE IS LIFE.
That said, I own a Keurig, but I don't use K-cups since they are a pain in the ass to take a part for recycling purposes, and are horrible for the environment if you don't. I have a special insert for my Keurig that allows me to buy coffee grounds from the store and fill it up. My favorite coffee is Gevalia's Guatemala blend. Ugghhhhh so good. ToT I mix hazelnut and irish cream creamers in my coffee and the result is heavenly. <3
But I'll drink just about any coffee. <3
Tbh, even though I know it's really bad for the environment I use a Keurig most of the time because my girlfriend's parents have one and I stay there a lot. :X We usually get:
Sometimes I make those coffees cold so I just put some ice, cream and sugar in a glass and let the coffee brew into it so it mostly mixes itself. It's pretty good, especially the hazelnut.
At Starbucks I usually end up getting something different every time because I can never remember what I've gotten before and their menu board changes all the time. I know there are other drinks available that aren't on the board but again I can't remember what I've had before. I really need to make a note in my phone, lol. In the fall I'm all over the pumpkin spice lattes and the... uh... cold version?? Whatever it's called. Pumpkin spice anything is delicious, imo. Otherwise I usually like something that's flavoured with hazelnut, caramel and I think I had something with almond in it once (it had some toasted almonds on top I think and it was delicious). I don't like whipped cream and I don't like much cream in stuff so I usually get something without a froth on top.
When I go to Timmies I usually get an Iced Capp because Timmies coffee is gross lol
I don't usually go to cafes but when I do I usually try something that's unique to them or at least different than the usual. I got a really nice matcha coffee at a local cafe (matcha anything is awesome).
I did end up getting a French press a few months ago. My fiance loves the coffee that it makes!
@ lucee - Now I need to find dark chocolate almond milk because it sounds amazing.
I wasn't even thinking of making cold brew coffee, but I'm interested in seeing what kind of results I would get using your method. And yes, I would mix the coffee with the almond milk. Thank you for sharing! ^^
