Our status page isn’t hosted by us, , that’s so people can see it when the site is down. It’s the same practice used by other sites, like twitter.
I had been on for almost nine hours straight yesterday preparing for New Years, and the site was stable for that entire time (and I was doing some heavy duty item editing for the New Years Shop reorganization). I got off to take a quick nap before I’d have to start actually adding items when a group of Mini-mods got a hold of me about the site. The site was already back up by the time I got on (which was within 15 minutes of being notified), and I was pretty much the only person around that could’ve brought the site up/down because like pointed out it was a holiday.
Grace got on pretty quickly after me (maybe 30 minutes?) to work on the avatars not showing up on forums issue, so I forgot to update the status site since I quickly moved on to items / getting prepared for Luminaire to end. I completely understand the frustration of not having the status page reflect the downtime/etc, and that was on me last night.
Yup, it happened on a national holiday when both of the programmers were spending time with family/friends. A notice was put on the top of the pages once we were able to find out what the problem was.
We've removed (for the most part) the 504/502 errors and really improved our communication over the last few weeks - I don't feel bad about this one short amount of downtime, or that you weren't able to get a few more items from the free shop.
