Once upon a time...
It's never enough. More, more, more! it screams, though only you hear it.
Your stocks of sugary treats will run out soon, surely. To leave the rock to get more would mean the lighthouse would be unattended, putting countless lives at risk.
Even if you had access to all the pastry-shops and sugarcane plantations in the known world, it still wouldn't satisfy the abomination in your outhouse.
You had so little time, making noises like a large game beast that just took an arrow to the unmentionables. Just as the life faded from you, the creature rose from the depths and offered you a loan, to reverse your infection and prolong your life for as long as you supplied it with sweet foods.
You're running out.
The day finally arrives. You have nothing more to give. The next delivery is a week from now. The creature will not wait. It can survive, but it tires of seaweed, yes it does. A luxury a day becomes a neccessity, after all. It cannot live without its sugary things!
Torn between various options, you pace your kitchen, head in hands. You find a solution: tell the truth.
You approach the outhouse with feet of lead. "I ran out of sweet things," you tell the void. The void grunted back. "I'm just going to get some more... I'll be back in a day." Your voice shakes. Glowing eyes appear. "... at the most. I'll get lots." The eyes narrow. "Well... see you soon?" The eyes disappear.
You head to the mainland as fast as you can.
The sweet shop hasn't opened yet. You practically beat down the door. A terrified-looking girl opens it without a word. She hurries behind the counter like she's taking cover from enemy fire.
You stand around eyeing all the sweets, trying to figure out what would be cheapest. You don't earn enough to support this creature's habit.
The cheapest sweet is pancakes. You lift a huge sack of sugar and another of flour. When you put them on the counter, the girl jumps and squeaks. You give her all your money. It's not enough, but she doesn't say anything. You haul it back to your boat and begin the journey back.
I was actually just reminding you to take breaks and eat something. But then you said it was chilling and then it turned into something else.
That was really fun to write. I'll stop spamming you with first drafts, though. Instead I'm gonna go turn that into a pet profile.
I'll let you know when it's done, just in case you're curious to see where it's going.
And a feast!
