Adventure Challenge

In Search of the Castaways by Jules Verne which I read in my mid teens and just loved.

The Story The book tells the story of the quest for Captain Grant of the Britannia. After finding a bottle the captain had cast into the ocean after the Britannia is shipwrecked, Lord and Lady Glenarvan of Scotland contact Mary and Robert, the young daughter and son of Captain Grant, through an announcement in a newspaper. The government refuses to launch a rescue expedition, but Lord and Lady Glenarvan, moved by the children's condition, decide to do it by themselves.Their adventure takes them to Australia, New Zealand and various South Pacific Islands before they actually find Capt Grant who had a heart warming reunion with his children.

A book I've read in common with this plot: Changes, by Jim Butcher. It's part of the Dresden Files series, and it sees Harry Dresden leading an assault on an Aztec temple where the Red Court vampires are holed up (and where they're holding his daughter). The culmination of the battle results in the destruction of the Red Court bloodline, outright killing a majority of the vampires and leaving the rest fully human.

Which is sort of like releasing a god, if you ask me. It's certainly a curse of mythical proportions.

Challenge - Book challenge So, I found this book in a thrift store called 'The Two Idols', and it's one of those old books that has a hard leather-bound cover, no picture or anything, just the book title in gold lettering. I don't remember the plot all that well, but the main character got an old idol from a friend who had died and found a mysterious map inside it and like our friend Blake, decided to blindly follow it to some tropical island. There were also curses and tombs and the like... but no Pizza vans.

I collect these:

The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid, by Rick Riordan It's from the same writer of the 'Percy Jackson's series. It's about egyptian mythology, so it connects mainly with the temples (and an adventure... in a sort of limbo).

Adventure Challenge (Tuesday) Entry

Sorry for the poor image quality I had to take pictures of photographs because I don't have a scanner. A very calm day in the midst of a canoe trip. The lake had been like glass, the images don't show it that well, but seeing it in person gave a very odd perspective because the lake truly was a mirror and you could barely tell reality from the reflection.

Challenge 2

I'm not a really outgoing type, but since I am the only one in my friends team, who has a car and a driver licenc, sometimes I have to go to nowhere. And that nowhere sometimes really beautiful.. but sometimes scary as hell. For example when you see nothing in the highway because it is near to midnight. It's the most wonderful feeling, but also really dangerous. The weather is cold, the radio has no signal, so you sing by your own in the trip, while just hoping there will be no roadbumps. I think, I love this.

(Sry, the picture is not mine.. you know, I can't take picture while driving)

Challenge 3: my book is Lord of the Flies. I really love that book... It's about a group of British school boys who were on a plane that crashed on an island, and they have to survive or go crazy trying. The connection is that both the book and the event took place on an island. We had to hunt (fruit) but the boys in the book hunted wild pigs. The island in the book also had a large mountain (not exactly a volcano but still.)

We just finished reading Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson. It's definitely an adventure, a really thrilling one!

Bands of Mourning is the...er, sort of third, sort of sixth book in the series (It's the third book in the second trilogy of the set, with one book between the trilogies. You can read the second trilogy without reading the first and only miss some really hilarious jokes and lots of background information that makes the second trilogy much more enriching to read...as it happens, the bands of mourning refer to something in the very first book XD). So to summarize the plot in a way that makes sense is a little confusing without referring to everything else that's happened...but here I go!

Main characters Waxilliam and Marasi are asked by some immortals to retrieve a metal spike (which is really important). Wax doesn't wanna because he's not super happy with the immortals right now, but they mention someone important to him is in the place where they can probably find the spike, so he decides to go. Two other MCs, Wayne and Steris, go with them, along with an immortal. The spike and individual are both held by a sinister enemy group previously established; at the first location, they discover a second, and go there to find a big, alien (as in foreign) ship. While infiltrating the ship, they find both the spike and the individual, along with a foreigner who was crew on the ship. He has all sorts of unique technology. They escape their enemies on the ship in a small skimmer and realize their enemies are after an artefact of no small power and head to get it instead. Lost of crazy, blood-churning plot twists happen which seem to be Sanderson's trademark, the search for the artefact is resolved as is a little bit of the fight with the enemy group, and a bigger, way scarier enemy is introduced. Screaming because the final book doesn't come out til 2018 ensues.

I went on a two-week science field course back in 2010 and had a great time. We went through three states (New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah) and saw so many different landmarks! I have a ton of awesome pictures and had a hard time deciding which to post, so I'll just go with my top two faves. :)

What's that? Is that the Grand Canyon? It sure is! The North Rim was beautiful when we went in May. There was still snow on the ground! So different than the pictures of the South Rim that you normally see everywhere.

A few members of my group hanging out in Lower Antelope Canyon. You really are just walking down into a crack carved out of the earth. The shape of the walls and the light streaming in from above was stunning.

(I hope I'm not too late for challenge /Tuesday's entry!)

Challenge 3

Actually I read a really good book, but sorry, it's hungarian, and I don't think that ever will be translated to english. However, it is a great story, with many adventure (J. Goldenlane: ~Infernal Aggro - for the mates).

You know, when you finished your holy quest, and kill (or something like that) the dragon, and then have a castle and a nice (or something like that) wife, and you want to live happily ever after..

.. and than you will be a ghost. But not for really, just everybody thinks that, because someone poisoned you, somebody has take you castle, and there is a poltergeist, who looks just like you, and wear your family's arms.. That's a problem. Meanwhile your wife searching for the danger what she calls "adventure" - like pickpocketing the new castle owner, finding out the secret of the ghost, and run and run and run, because almost everybody wants to kill her.

I've read the Robert Fagles' translation of the Odyssey, which was fantastic. Merana could be compared to Calypso or Circe easily enough. Circe in particular as Calypso just wreaks havoc on Odysseus and wants him to stay with her forever. While Circe does the same thing, she interferes with the passage of time and takes the whole of his crew hostage, which the entire island was basically hostage for Merana.

Disclaimer: I have not read a book that's like this plot. But a book that always makes me smile because it's about unlikely friends and random adventures is Wind in the Willows.

I couldn't help think the whole time how unlikely it was for Blake, Saggi, and the two brothers to be "friends", but I like to think that friendships were formed and that they secretly are all out going on adventures together regularly now. :)
