Adventurous Food-Challenge

While I don't agree with calling food adventurous, I get what is meant of the challenge.

This'll freak some people out. I like cod liver oil or castor oil, I grew up around those supplement capsules because I needed the nutrition as a child. This was not forced on me, I had more than the daily dosage, had them like candy xD I liked the clean and light bloody taste that I recently found again in roe sushi. At first I thought I didn't like salmon roe sushi but that was only because it was supermarket quality. The supermarket one was too rusty. Honestly it just tasted unprepared/ dirty, you'd think someone who put all the effort to put the food together would clean and flavor it properly but it just tasted "canned" or like uncured or the wrong cut of salmon so that was a horrible experience. This is really a food that should only be prepared by specialized chefs. Never try the convenience version of these things unless it's a trusted establishment. The roe (caviar) comes in different sizes and they're fragile and juicy like those syrup beads from bubble tea (east coast)/ boba tea (west coast). Some sweeter than others, I like it prepared savory. The tobiko roe beads are teeny and usually sweet though.

Rant I wouldn't call eating "adventurous" the way some have let that meant because we didn't go hunt it as we did for trail, it's not there to kill us, it was prepared for us and we most likely sat our first world butts down and paid for it. Interpretation to adventurous has already been followed up by comments of cultural weirdness which will only reveal people's individual taste ranges, pickiness, or any intolerances beyond stomach upset and allergies. The self-serving experience to stuff our faces otherwise die is not adventurous. We're not brave for choosing not to die or expanding our minds/ diets. You're just suppose to.

I'm not an adventurous person at all, even for food... Long story short, once during high school I went to a classmate's house kinda uninvited, and all that had for lunch was rice, bean and some green, healthy thing that I had never eaten in my life, like pretty much any other green healthy thing that's not grape. It would be too rude to eat just rice and bean so I told myself "you are not 5 years old anymore! It can't be this bad!". Oh boy, I was wrong. On the first bite it was ~5 minutes of chewing and expressions that desperately asked for help to the friend that brought me there, and even mixing everything I don't know how I made it. I still remember the mix of joy and pain when I actually felt the taste of the rice/bean and thought the waste it was having to eat them with the horrible green healthy thing.

I even failed an adventure once, when I tried to try (?) raw fish. The waiter said that I "spent the whole time staring and feeling sorry for a soy sauce drowned piece of sashimi". At least they were nice and didn't charge my part.

Adventurous Food-Challenge

When I went to study abroad in Norway for one semester I had quite a few interesting food adventures - some good, some bad.

Smelling Lutefisk was definitly enough, I did not want to actually taste it. see here I love licorice, and northern Europe is quite licorice friendly, so they have loads of different things. Like licorice ice cream (which was kinda ok) or pear(!)-licorice-chocklate (which was not so much) or mint with licorice (which is awsome!). Also juice and sirup and saft was quite confusing. In German "Saft" is juice. In Norwegian "juice" is just that, but "saft" is some thick sugary fluid with taste that you are supposed to water down. And then there is also "sirup" - at least no confusion here. Buying cherry "saft" thinking it was actual juice and just dinking it like that was so sickening sweet. On the happy side there would always be food containing potatoes. My love for potatoes will never end.

Also a friend of mine runs a bar and she also has a great assortment of English beer and cider and will often have "interesting" new samples. Cucumber Cider. Sadly she was not able to get her hands on that again since last november. It's wonderful. And adding cucumber sirup to just any good cider will just not have the same well balanced taste and will mostly just ruin an otherwise good drink. cries a river

I could go on for hours about food.

Looking for some previous years Melody items. Especially books and minions. Happy to trade!

Hm, the first time I had sashimi was a little adventurous. Not much, though, as I love fish and I love sushi, and it wasn't too much of a stretch. And I do adore sashimi, but not as much as sushi with the rice and nori. Hm, what else? My first time trying crab legs and calimari comes to mind -- crab legs in the shell, that is. And my first time at an Indian restaurant. I'm pretty open minded about food, though the thought of insects kinda weirds me out, and I don't know if I'll be able to manage trying them when presented with the opportunity. Maybe if they don't look like insects? But I love trying food from all over. ^.^

Challenge

I am not a very adventurous eater as I like the simple foods life has to offer so I guess the adventure I had was one time eating at the Mexican restaurant in town. They have excellent food and people come from all over to eat there. On this night we were out with the kids and grand kids and I ordered my usual Tostada and discovered too late the hot peppers in it. I don't do hot stuff and man was that an experience. Talk about burn when you are not used to it. Runny nose, watery eyes and mouth on fire. Took me lots of water to cool it down. Now I really watch to make sure I don't eat one of those peppers again!

I'm sorry that you came upon some trouble uploading your picture, but unfortunately we can't count it towards the 4th challenge entries since it ended over an hour before you posted. :( Sorry!

This current challenge should be easy to do, so you can still submit an entry for that. :)

Challenge Dear God, this challenge reminds me of this years GISHwhes.

GISHwhes mouthwash <--My video

GISHwhes 2016 Item Time-lapse your submission where appropriate. We're looking for Gishers to be product testers for our new line of powerful breath-defying mints! If you received a barf bag & mints last year, this Item is for you. Create a 25 second video in which you create the most unappealing (but still safe to consume) "mouthwash" you can from food items, condiments and drinks. Really make it a stomach-churning, disgusting combination of edible products—for example, chocolate milk, mayonnaise, pureed anchovies and orange juice. Then, use the mouthwash on yourself. Make sure to gargle! Finally, use on of our Gishwhes patented breath-defying mints and give a loved one a kiss. Rate the product on whether your loved one needed to use the barf bag after locking lips with you. (If you did not get a patented trademarked gishwhes barf bag & mints, then you are part of our control group and may complete this item with any barf bag and some probably inferior, commercially available breath mints.)

That was...I dont know how to say it. Making a mouthwash out of stuff I found in the kitchen (the actual making of the video took longer than figuring out which things to make the 'mouthwash' out of). I said 100% that its a thing I would not do again, but i Have a feeling if theres a task like that next year for GISHwhes, I'll do it again.

The video is really 'sped up' to keep it within the time limit allowed...I actually had to film it twice because my moms cat likes to sleep on the stove (where I had stuff propped up), and the first time he decided to 'video-bomb' me, and I had to do it again.

Damn you Misha Collins.

Challenge Salted caramel. It might look silly, I know. But salted caramel changed the way I felt about mixing flavors. I always felt like "why would someone pour salt into something sickly sweet" and one day I decided to give it a try. And I felt a rush of feelings, it didn't taste like anything I've had before. It was one hell of an experience. My sister was reluctant to give it a try and I failed to convince her but I know she will eventually give it up (or i'll deceive her into thinking it's just common caramel). I'm always trying to find new fillings for pancakes. I've tried a lot of stuff and some didn't turn out very well (coconut ice cream, lemon syrup, beaten egg whites) but I'm aware this is just part of the process of trial and failure, and I know that eventually i'll find something that pleases me the most.

[s] I took part into Challenge but I don't see my name on the list :l here's my post[/S] sorry I'm not sure if you've tracked all entries so far so I thought I should give it more time

Challenge :

I guess for me the adventurous food would be a toss up between escargot and frog legs.

The escargot, served with butter and garlic was actually very tasty, reminding me a bit of steamed clams or oysters. The frog legs on the other hand, even though I was told they taste like chicken (and they do) was more difficult to get past the fact that they were "frog legs". lol

Challenge (sorry I haven't been active until this one, got unexpectedly busy)

I'd never liked the idea of raw fish, at all, and friends kept pressuring me to go with them to an all you can eat place downtown. They showed me the menu and I saw I could get some chicken and beef items as well so I went one day. Needless to say they ordered way more than they needed, so to help clear the mountain of plates I decided to try just a few pieces of sushi, then sashimi. At first it was kind of odd, but after trying a couple of different things I found I suddenly had a taste for it. I've been hooked ever since.

Yup, you're on the list. No need to worry.

The list on the first post is basically out of date, so anything on page 17 and after isn't updated, but it is on our list.

Speaking of which, I just updated the (behind the scenes) list up to this post.

Challenge : Eating frog legs. I would consider that adventurous. I don't think I would have otherwise eaten it because well....it's FROG....blech. But it wasn't that bad actually (and I generally like meat..). Didn't really change my outlook on food - I'm still as picky as ever

Challenge : This is funny because I was just in the food section of our library and looked at two books...One about why we keep dogs, eat pigs and wear cows and not all the other ways around. It was interesting to think about why it's socially acceptable (generally speaking) to eat certain animal tissues and not others...which leads into the other book I was looking at, which was Odd Bits. It's all about why certain parts of animals that are socially acceptable (generally speaking) are more socially acceptable than others, and how that has changed. And has recipies for trying said Odd Bits. I've not tried them yet, but my son works in a butcher shop, so I am determined to try at least a couple of bits at some point! Up until now, the most adventurous things I have tried in that they were not and are not now part of my usual diet would be - Escargot in Grade 8 even though I tried to convince the teacher I had a moral objection on the grounds of having jars of snails as a science project turned pets...to no avail. I didn't like it then and have never had them since. - My gramma convinced me to try headcheese when I was small because she was very fond of it. Didn't like it... and most recently would be -Moon Cakes -...this was something I tried voluntarily with my hubby and kids, we all tried a small bit of one to see what it was like. I didn't like it, I was actually surprised at how much I actually didn't like them. I was also surprised by how much my husband actually did! How these things changed my outlook on food...even though I didn't like any of it, I still think it is important to keep an open mind and try things in spite of or even because of their being out of the ordinary for you. You might not like the thing, but at least you can say you tried it and definitively do not like it! That being said, I also don't think anyone should be forced to eat something they don't want to try or know they don't like...forcing someone to try something just kills that sense of adventure and you can pretty much guarantee they will not like it.

Adventurous Food-Challenge

I've always been pretty willing to try at least a taste of almost any food, so I'm not sure what I'd consider adventurous. (I did draw the line at tasting chocolate covered bugs - I just couldn't manage that). I have not been presented with anything really exotic (like you see on some of the extreme food shows). I've had canned octopus (rubbery and not good) but I'd say the most influential adventurous food experience for me is one that would be mundane for many (myself now included). After a growing up in a family for whom Chinese food meant chop suey and exotic meant getting chow mein instead, I was introduced to spicy foods with red peppers, or jalapenos (or habaneros) and really loved them. Of course, at first, my heat tolerance was low, and I will never be able to eat some of the things I've seen others manage, but I now have a love of all things spicy and a medium high tolerance (I've been known to ask for the hot chile oil to add to my dish at restaurants). Discovering spicy also wound up helping me to discover all sorts of ethnic cuisines, more authentic Chinese, Mexican, Brazillian, Indian, Thai - whatever I can find. And I really enjoy them all. So, for me, that was my best food adventure.

Happy Trails
