Gwen had her own broom in hand as she started after Caswell; her broom was found in an attic or a neighbor’s house and given to her when she was a few years younger. It might be old but it did what she needed it to; it was a loyal broom. Gwen though was not a big flyer and did not use it much though.
She lined up with the other students and mounted her broom. She felt him (yes, her broomstick always felt like it would have a more male personality) jump a little bit and get ready to fly her around. She kicked off the ground and hovered for a few moments not far from the ground; getting use to the feel of flying. She looked around at the other students at this point and saw that some looked nervous and did not know what to do whereas others were already zooming around like pros. She felt better knowing the other students were not all avid flyers.
Noticing Caswell Gwen started to fly up to him and into the line that was forming in front of him.
Gwen knew she could fly through the hoops in front of her if she took her time but her broom seemed to have a different thought. Without thinking Gwen shot forward and through the first hoop – then the broom must have thought that hoops would be boring because she did not make it through another hoop before the broom was racing around everyone in circles. It was not long before Gwen grew dizzy and fell off the broom – however I did say the broom was loyal to Gwen. Right before she hit the ground the broom swooped in caught her then landed softly on the ground. I guess the broom just wanted to have a little fun.
Emmy had brought her own broom with her, the Nimbus 2001 she'd convinced her parents to buy her two years previously. It was quite an old model nowadays, so it hadn't been very expensive, thankfully. Emmy adored flying and had always wanted to try out for the Hufflepuff quidditch team, but she always seemed to be busy when trials were happening. Maybe she would make sure she actually went this year.
Breaking out of her thoughts of quidditch, she turned her attention as Mr. Caswell spoke to them, telling them what he wanted them to do. She smiled, drumming her fingers on her broomstick, as some of the newer students glanced around nervously. She remembered what that was like. In her first year, she'd been terrified to fly for the first time, but she'd found she had a knack for it. On the ground, she was rather clumsy, but in the air, she was much better controlled. She loved everything about flying, and sometimes wished she could transform into a bird rather than her actual cat animagus form, just to soar through the skies, unaided by a broom.
Breaking out of her thoughts once again, she realized people were starting to mount their brooms and hurriedly hopped onto hers, easily hovering a few feet off the ground. She rose higher and drifted over to where Carlisle hovered, waiting, and took her place near the front of the line, with any of the others that were more comfortable with flying. She glanced around and waved at Aderyn, who was rising up behind her, a few students back.
Carlisle waved his wand and the glowing hoops appeared around the pitch. Grinning, Emmy crouched lower to her broomstick handle and watched the first couple of students take off. She waited until the person in front of her was at the second hoop, and then zoomed forward. Immediately she felt like she wanted to whoop with happiness as the wind whipped her hair away from her face, feeling exhilarated as she poured on the speed and zipped through the first two hoops. She realized she was quickly gaining on the person in front of her so she slowed down to a more comfortable pace, deeply breathing in the fresh, chilly air.
She easily slipped through the third, fourth and fifth hoops. She nearly missed the sixth hoop, as she got distracted by a rather large bird not too far away in the forest, but righted herself just in time to avoid hitting the edge and still managed to get through the hoop. Forcing herself to focus again, she flew through the rest of the hoops without issue. She had to resist the urge to take off like a shot down the other side of the pitch and reluctantly aimed herself at the ground, landing a bit hard and stumbling, but staying upright. She shouldered her broom and watched the rest of her classmates, already excited for the next time she'd be able to take off.

I would suggest hovering a little higher that way you feel the wind and learn to manage your broom." A wave of his wand a large net hovered 4 feet over the ground. "Just in case." Carlisle gave a quick nod and returned to the other students. "Mari you are welcome to join Garrett while you get comfortable with your broom."
