Most of the time, I feel like I have nothing to say when I do visit the forums - which is rare these days because I can't spend hours on this site like I used to :( but yeah, I've noticed the drop in activity. I think a lot of people just go on the shoutbox instead. I've never cared for it much personally but I guess it's what users prefer over forums lately.
I took a pretty long hiatus because of life and thought I would check in to see the changes but I definitely see a huge drop in activity. It sucks because I remember "back in the day" when you could pretty much start a chat about anything and so many people would get involved. Now it just seems pointless to start a thread because you don't get a response until a week later. I'm sure people are like me, who have joined Subeta when they were young and then grew up and got major responsibilities.
I think that there needs to be a general PR campaign for Subeta. It's not really well-known and the only reason I found it was because at the time I was on Neopets and looking for similar web games. And I came back because I remembered really enjoying it. I also noticed that there are usually only about 1,000 active members online at a time, or less. :(
Maybe it can be suggested that we do a push for more new members? It would be fantastic to share this wonderful site with others!
The shoutbox does seem pretty active, and it's a lot easier to keep track of since it's always on the sidebar.
Where would any of us advertise though? Gaia's still surprisingly active but has the nastiest userbase. Neopets probably bans mentioning other petsites lol. Not sure how Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook would go since they're relatively mainstream, but maybe that's a bonus.
I've been lowkey trying to get a couple friends to join, but no one has time because of college and jobs.
I don't post much because I rarely have anything to talk about.

I have become a bit inactive myself, maybe popping in a couple times a week, but even I have noticed this myself. This most recent time I've seen some new forums, but then again some have dated in early- to mid-May. I've thought the same the past several times I've gotten on though.
I agree with the user demographic thing though. I personally just finished a chaotic school semester, graduated college last month, got engaged last month, and have been job hunting for my new big girl job/career. I've been so busy and haven't had motivation to log on and work on my pets tbh.
Who knows, it could just be a phase. Summer is about to start up so maybe it'll bring some life to the forums and Subeta in general again. Not as many people will have to worry about school/college now.
Life is crazy and throwing a lot at people our age so it's definitely a contributor. We're adulting, guys! I'm planning a move and my boyfriend was laid off back in December and still can't find work in his industry. I do 40-hour weeks managing the busiest Chuck E. Cheese's in Canada and keep busy around the house. I really hope to go back to school soon, but saving money is a distant dream.
I have only wee time to dedicate to hobbies including my virtual critters. :/
Yeah, totally agree on a PR campaign or some sort of more effective advertising. Even Neopets is dying and like you, I only heard about Subeta through word-of-mouth there. Pet sites and forums in general really just aren't what they used to be. I tried introducing my brothers to Subeta and they were so confused! While we clicked and pointed as kids and teens nowadays they tap, tap, tap.
They laughed at the concept of Neomail/smail.
