topic is about lifelikes, so I assumed all just meant all of the lifelikes you referred to them as both dolls and plushies because really they're the same thing. it was a joke anyway. words aren't too helpful, they're the source of many disagreements because of their inherent ambiguities since they can mean different things to different people, especially on the internet where tone isn't conveyed well and context doesn't really matter to most people.

I actually quite like the little fuzzy aspects to the plushies! It makes me think of different fabrics, the ones with fuzz/thread end are thicker like fleece, while the ones without make me think of like nylon or something similar!

I think this is really a preference thing. I like the stray hairs! I think I started the trend, actually, back during the Saheric Temple plot with the little stone guardian plushies. Oops. (PEOPLE LIKED THEM!) I don't think the little hairs say second hand! Some of my favourite plushie makers irl make 'tatty' bears, they're absolutely lovely.

It became a stylistic thing with the lifelike dolls too. The thing is with those, is that most of the species are actually done and have been for a long time, but we're releasing them with the pet articles rather than flooding the market with them all in one go. (This also really helps us keep track of them)

So the neela is a lot newer than the feli, and we've sort of finelined the design of them by this point. We have in our more recent lifelike dolls made the little hairs and such more subtle. But there's a backlog still to come out of the older ones, and I'd not want to just change the style of the dolls at this point anyway!

OMG that makes so much sense about the timeline of the style/artwork. Thanks!

This thread might or might not have been an opportunity to also imply a personal preference about the spikes all over all the plushie things everywhere these days. shifty eyes TL;DR might not just be the carnival in a macro sense but Rah pretty much explained it all above n__n

I honestly wasn't serious about them being from a carnival as the real reason they have these.

I don't know how you can't tell with what I said to I'd need to be delusional to honestly think that's the reason :p

They really do sorta look like they've fallen on a cactus. It doesn't really bother me though.

Unless you're trying to emphasize the fact that a toy is old and worn, "plushie spikes" are stupid in general in my humble opinion. I've owned plenty of cheaply made Chinese plush dolls, but never one quite so ghetto that it had giant random threads poking out every which way. They make me feel like the artist is trying too hard to make sure we know they're plushies. Seams and the like may not be obvious at all on a good quality toy.

The threads on plushies here remind me of the first time sewing projects from my time in Home Ec. They had threads sticking out all over the place because we were sewing poorly and made mistakes galore requiring us having to stop and restart. We didn't know how to avoid the long/short tails of sewing thread. Once we got the hang of sewing we stopped having so many threads sticking out. Unless one of us sewed too close to the edge then the threads sticking out was because the fabric was fraying.

That's why I would say they look more cheaply made because they were cranked out without regard to quality by those inexperienced in sewing.

Now I really need to clip off that thread on my Grumpy Cat plush's foot. It looks like either the toe defining thread came loose or whoever made it left a long thread after knotting it. It's annoying the crap out of me.

edit to add- I should also say, now if I want a plushie for a TC I tend to judge on those threads and if they are either not as noticeable, non-existent, or if I can edit the image to remove them (I know the coding to overlay TC items here). I just have to be like not lazy to do either of these things or I just pass it up.

I don't mind the stray threads, I think it's a good way of making them look cuddlier and more plushie-like.

I am disappointed in the lifelike Wyllop dolls, though. They look really blurry to me when worn. I was looking forward to them so much, because Wyllops are my favorite pets, and it was just ... anti-climactic. Their pose and expressions are so cute, but I feel like I can barely see them. I don't have this issue with other lifelike dolls of similar size.

is it just my eyes/monitor, or is there something wrong with the Wyllop overlays?

You can go and put some seams on a plushie without going overboard

And then you have
