I am totally on board for magenta and emerald green colors.

Now, about the swampies. The art is much cleaner, and I'm grateful for an update, but I think the swampie update put a spotlight on the pet's problems. Lots of people are saying that swampies are too bland, and some even forgot it's a pet altogether. I think the species needs a more drastic revamp (to the magnitude that festers and waradors got) to stand out.

I don't think every pet specie has to be EXCITING.

I happen to like the simplicity of the Swampie's design.

If anything, a lot of pets could win by having simpler designs, such as the Tutani (It has butt wings because????????) and the Tutani is largely less popular than the Swampie is.

This update definitely helps and I love the flippers being shaded to look nice and flat, but I second the Swampie being really bland. It just needs some more fine details to give it more oomph

possible things:

 • using the spines/back nubby-things color to make a stripe down it's tail -giving it some really cute (nearly useless) little back flippers -making its underside lighter because if it's aquatic that dark belly color is going to put it at a real disadvantage if it's trying to hide -maybe making the spiney things a little smaller?

this is totally just pointless brainstorming, but I tend to stare at the Swampie when it shows up in the news and think of all the small details that could be added to make it more eye-catching

i think the revamp is better, yes. the dawn one looks cute now.

but i agree the swampie is simply too boring. it reminds me of the old serpenth, how it was very plain. but it's a good point that adding random details don't make a pet popular. i don't think the tutani (as mentioned earlier) or the serpenth are popular, even though they have more detail. but the way the swampie is now reminds me of a Barney character or something. and maybe that's okay; there must be plenty of people who love the swampie as it is now.

obviously i just have a personal distaste for the swampie, so i can't say how i feel about it matters much. i'll never be interested in them unless they received a drastic change.

Serpenth is top 20 in popularity. :D

Swampie is not in the bottom rung, but it's close.

Also, massive overhauls do not turn pets that are not popular into WOW, POPULAR PETS. The Warador is 49th in popularity, the Swampie is 50th, the Torrent is 51th and the Fester is 56th

Some concepts just won't be for everyone.

Sometimes all the pet needs is an update. I personally don't really have an issue with the current update as is though I do think that having a lighter belly would be interesting. It would fit and be more in line with real life aquatic creatures since a lot of fish, and marine mammals in general usually have lighter bellies to blend in with their marine environment.

That said, I kind of have to agree with though. A revamp won't make a previously unpopular pet surge in popularity. I have several unpopular pets among my listed pet list and the vast majority of them didn't surge in popularity even after they were updated. I.e. I have a Chelon and a torrent, among other pets not considered popular and respectively they're still at 50 and 55 and they're both updated pets.

Also, and triple agree with a banana color. :o

I look at this thread, and man do we need colors that matches the old Swampie&;s Field and Dawn. I know they were not fitting Field and Dawn&;s colorschemes, but they&;re still very good color and I love them D:

A rich, emerald green and a vivid magenta are exactly what we need.

But yeah, well-deserved revamp!

I agree with the magenta (or even fuchsia?), in special if there's a hint of royalty in the new color. Like, making the side colors red, rich blue or violet (or maybe golden, too). It could even be called Royal? I don't know.

(I'm having ideas for more colorfills here, like bronze and pearl, please send help)

Purple is the color of royalty, technically. I did a mockup where I did a darker version of lilac with dark pink accents and I liked it.

Imo they should be shinier. Aquatic mammals have extremely shiny skin due to the sheer amount of mucus and water they're covered with.

To me removing the highlights, awful as they were, sucked out some of the life of this pet. Remember when the Fester got a complete overhaul? That's what needs to happen to the Swampie in my opinion. made an awesome alternative in the news comments and I'd so love something like that. I may even get a Swampie if that were to happen, but not as is. I mean this revamp is a slight update, but I feel this pet needs some more tlc.

Loving all of the colourfill ideas being tossed around in this thread though, count me in for those.

I made a couple mockups for colorfills

Banana. I used a soft pink for the accent, but looking back, I feel like the tan on the tail would also work very well. It's distinct enough from gold and with the pink belly, it's a warmer counterpart to cream

Darker version of field. This is something I need in my life

Darker version of dawn, I dig the bright yellow tummy. I might have fell in love with pink + yellow combos

Darker lilac, went with fuchsia accents to separate further from actual lilac.

Ohhh I would LOVE a banana colorfill. We need a more natural-looking yellow than gold, but something that's still distinctly yellow instead of tan/creamish.

I love these revamps, the subtle changes make a big difference. My favorites are the Nuclear (that dripping along the spines is such a nice touch) and Marsh, so pretty. <3

Definitely an improvement.

I think the Swampie could use some back flippers. Something seems off about its hindquarters being just a tube of flesh.

I think that the highlights in the old swampie made sense because they displayed the like smooth texture to the skin; also as a water creature the water would cause that reflection if it were out of water? The gold/silver revamps display it really well. But I like the softer shading.

I'm also going to second that I think the swampie just needs a complete revamp at this point. Something to make him have a 'wow' factor. not necessarily being cute, but he's just sort of a blob with fins right now.

Besides that tho its a good revamp :)

^quick mockup of marsh swampie with gold swampie highlights to imply aquatic lifestyle

While the update certainly is nice, it really only highlights (hueheuehue see what i did there) the swampie's design shortcomings imo. I can definitely get behind eventually revamping the actual swampie design, bc i WANT to like swampies but when i get one i just keep zapping. There are so many neat plesiosaurs and other sauropterygians to use for inspo, the possibilites r endless q_q What are the spines even supposed to be? (why do so many subeta species still have random spines anyway) Pangolin scutes, stegosaurian plates? Is there a collapsible sail hidden between them like a crouching nessie, hidden spinosaurus? Why does it only have 2 flippers, how does it move? Like modern whales have tail flukes in lieu of hind flippers, fish have various fins, eels and oarfish have sails, and crocodiles use their hind legs to push off the ground underwater... And the actual nessie/plesiosaur the swampie is based on should have four flippers. All i can imagine is how snakes swim which doesn't seem very energy efficient for anything but a snake...

Or does it move like this:

I agree! They are almost fuzzy looking now, and very soft- but I think the sharp highlights made them look very sleek and handsome, and actually like water creatures. I think this soft style they are in is more lovely for a fuzzy pet, though I've noticed it's becoming more popular to make pet art rounder and softer recently- I'll just say it's not as well suited for pets like the Swampie. It could use a little lubing up ;P

As for design revamp: I don't know if changing the sleek and simple design is the way to go, swampies already have the cute back spines. I think maybe if it had a "mottled" pelt and a lighter belly?

Example:

Something like this? They have a neat aquatic pattern that adds a lot of visual interest without extra frills. A little extra color variation could go a long way, and save us from needing a huge revamp.
