This lesson contains a ESSAY QUESTION assignment. ** This lesson was written by of Ravenclaw - she has been awarded 75 House Points!
"Good afternoon students. My name is Astrid Haugen and I am Scandinavia's leading expert in ancient runes. As I'm sure you already know, runes predate the use of Latin in Germanic societies and are therefore even more powerful than our modern, Latin derived charms and incantations. What you may not know is that there are several different Runic alphabets. Today I am going to instruct you on the Elder Futhark, the oldest known alphabet.
The Elder Futhark contains 24 characters. Each character has a sound it makes, but each individual character also has a specific meaning. I have written them for you here on the board," she flips the board over to reveal the following:

"I am also giving each of you a parchment with the possible meanings of each rune."
Astrid passes out small scrolls to each student:

She allows them time to read over the meanings before continuing with the lesson, "Now, the ancient druids used these letters to construct some of the oldest magic known to wizarding kind. By combining runes in different ways, using the meanings as a guide, we are able to create spells for may things. For instance..."
Astrid pulls a palm-sized grey stone from the pouch at her belt. She returns to the lecturn, takes up a quill and moves it swiftly over the stone. Next she holds the stone cupped in both hands and murmurs an odd incantation that sounds something like "imbecile". She then extends her hands out to the students so they can see as the stone shakes and suddenly sprouts roots from the runes Astrid had written on the surface. The roots wrap themselves around the stone and then a slender trunk emerges from the center of the the roots and rises upwards, complete with small branches and a few tender leaves.
Placing the new sapling on the floor, Astrid smiles and returns to the board, where she then scrawls:

Here I used the ingwaz to call upon nature, the birkano for beginnings and birth, the sowilo for the power of sunlight and laguz to tap into lakes for water. I spoke the word, ngbsl aloud to harness the properties together, and in doing so, was able to grow a tree from a stone."
Your assignment today is to construct a runic incantation. Explain what letters you choose and why, as well as what the end result should be. Please keep your answer between 1-3 paragraphs. Please post your answers here behind spoiler tags (if you do not know how to use spoiler tags, please let me know and I'd be happy to help you).
Your essay will be graded out of a maximum of 15 House Points.
Runic Incantation
For my incantation, I chose the runes Ansuz, Gebo, Nauthiz, and Mannaz to form the incantation Agnm (pronounced ag-num).
This incantation could be used in times when a witch or wizard is stranded with no means of transportation back to their origin, or on to their destination, such as lack of an entry point to the floo network, lack of a broom, and/or an inability to apparate. This incantation summons a spectral horse that the witch or wizard can ride with incredible speed over any landscape to get to where they need to go.
The rune for Ansuz calls ont he powers of the god Odin. The rune for Gebo asks the god for a gift. The rune for Nauthiz conveys the witch or wizard's desperate need. Finally, the rune for Mannaz begs for the steed that they can use for transport. When put together, drawn, and spoken aloud, the incantation would conjure the steed to any witch or wizard worthy of such a gift from Odin.

For a well protected happy home, I created a bind rune of Othala for the home and Algiz for protection. Within the lines of Othala and Algiz is formed the rune Wungo for joy. Inscribing this over the doorway and the hearth with the incantation O-Z-W-O, pronounced Oh-zaw-Oh, will result in a home protected from harm that is a happy home.

For those travelling home for the holidays, and safe journeys back to Hogwarts again, I would use Ehwaz (travel for pleasure - travelling home has to be pleasurable), Sowilo (good fortune), Algiz (protection - we all want a safe journey) and Wunjo (joy - not just joy at travelling, but the joy of being back in familiar company once you get home), with the incantation Eszw (hopefully pronounced Ezz-wuh).

Incantation
For my incantation I chose Algiz, Sowilo, Uruz, Berkano, Dagaz. It goes by the name ZSUBD (pronounced as SUUBT)
For all the people that find themselves in trouble, this incantation would give them protection from the feelings they have or the danger they might be in. It would give them fortune so they will be able to make wise decisions and a new chance. They also need strength to keep on going even when the times are harder for them and to make those decisions they will be facing. It would give them a new beginning, a chance to start over again, with the fortune and strenght provided. Last but certainly not least, it would give them hope. Hope that they won't ever face the same difficulties again.

incantation
The runes I chose consist of Dagaz, Tiwaz, and Ansuz. It's named Dta (Pronounced as Dih-tah).
This incantation is used for those who would be dishonest, and would force them to tell the truth. The runes make sure the person it is used upon will speak the truth, as well as speak with clarity, as to not confuse the caster. This can be used in many places, such as in court with the ministry of magic, amongst distrustful lovers, or even on a child when the mother asks where the candy really went. Dagaz it to make sure the statement is clear, as to not confuse the faster. Tiwaz is used to signify truth and justice in general. Finally, Ansuz is to make sure the bewitched person says the truth by word of mouth.

The runes I choose are as follows: Ingwaz, Dagaz, Sowilo, and Wunjo. It's called Happ. It's incantation for anyone who needs plenty of hope, good fortune, and joy. I know so many people who have gone through hard times and need help finding any of the three.
incantation
I've combined Uruz, Thurisaz, and Raido as a sort of "power-up". Although the effects aren't noticeable physically, it can be noticed mentally. The effects of this incantation won't last incredibly long, but it will give you a surge of strength and bravery any Gryffindor would admire. Raido is used to access your unconscious, whereas Thurisaz and Uruz are used for strength.
To cast it, hold the runes in your palm, while thinking of what you want to accomplish. When you're ready, say THUR (pronouncing it as Thor). You'll be using your own unconscious mental power, while calling upon the god of thunder. It should be used right before your act of bravery, although you may notice that you're unusually fearless and impulsive for the rest of the day.

Water Cycle
Sowilo for the sun, laguz for the sea, and thurisaz for force.
The sun shines down on the sea, causing it to heat up. The force then comes in and causes the heating water to float up into the the atmosphere and mixing together creating clouds and water soon after that would rain down on the sea to start over again.
Creating the water cycle.
War Incantation
Tiwaz,Perthro,Algiz,Ansuz,Berkano,Kenaz,Ansuz,Dagaz.
For War to happen, then a chance, to have protection, with Odin or Birth of a Fire God to bring hope. I think its a great spell for war to have a chance for either in the battle against your enemies. Hope is always what keeps the spirit alive really.

My runic incantation is Kszd (pronounced kuh-zid). It's made up of the runes Kenaz, Sowilo, Algiz, and Dagaz.
I used the kenaz to call upon fire, the sowilo for good fortune, the algiz for protection, and the dagaz for hope.
This incantation aids those who are weary and find fear in the darkness. It calls forth a bright and warm fire that protects and soothes the caster through the night. The flames then die out in the daylight of the following morning. However the good fortune, protection, and hope remain until the caster finds a safe shelter. The word can be spoken aloud anywhere, as the fire will materialize as a spark over the heart if there isn't a suitable situation for a blaze. I really enjoyed doing this assignment, well done! ❤

Crossing the Sea
Two versions of the same spell:
Ehwaz, Algiz, Laguz - Eal (Pronounced Ayl)
Ehwaz- travel Algiz- protection Laguz- sea/lake
This spell/incantation will protect the caster as they travel across, through or above any large body of water from any agressive magical (or non-magical) creature that may wish to attack them.
Second version:
Ehwaz, Algiz, Laguz, Ansuz, Ehwaz - Ealae (Pronounced Ay-lay)
Ehwaz- travel Algiz- protection Laguz- sea/lake Ansuz- Odin Ehwaz- horse
This incantation can be used to summon an aquatic horse-like creature, much like hippocampi (it is a similar species), which will take the caster across the body of water they wish to cross, if they be worthy to recieve such an honour from the Norse God, Odin. They will also be protected from other creatures, as in the first version of the spell.

HARVEST INCANTATION
The runic incantation is Soizfealga (Soh-eez-fe-al-gah).
The runes to be used are Sowillo for good fortune, Algiz for protection, Jera for harvest and year, Fehu for cattle and Othala for homestead.
This incantation is to be used when there has been a year of poor harvest and starvation or famine. It will allow the bearer/s a year of good fortune, with protection for their cattle, homestead and harvest.

Fehu, Jera, Algiz, Othala
I have chosen to use the runes Fehu, Jera, Algiz and, Othala. These four runes combines would be FAJO - pronounced FA - JOE. They would be used to in a farm-like setting, for healthy/happy homes. They would be helpful for a good harvest, crops, animals, milk and, all around good health of the family.
Runes and Incantation
The runes I chose were Nauthiz (Need), Algiz (Protection), and Dagas (Day) and the incantation of the combination is Dagaulg (da-gawlg). The reasoning for this rune is to provide an immediate area of shelter for the length of one day. So if someone was on the run or in danger and they needed a place that's hidden and safe as soon as possible and it's an emergency, this rune can be drawn, for example, at the entrance of a cave and it would prevent anyone from getting in and if any dangers are inside the area, they pay no mind to you.
