In my opinion cultural appropriation is when you take your appreciation too far with a dash of ignorance. An obvious example (Weeaboos) comes to mind. They fetishize Japanese people and try to learn about Japan through anime. It's an insincere curiosity and delusional approach to learning about another culture. It disrespects the group they're desperately trying to be a part of. They place Japanese on a pedestal and there's this strange rejection of their own culture. I actively avoid people who drop desu, senpai, baka, kawaii, and sugoi into their english sentences (Some people do this in a sarcastic/joking manner. You're not the kind of person I'm referring to.)
As long as what you're doing is respectful and not mocking/misrepresenting/perverting a culture then I think you're A-OK!
The thing is that for black people, it can never just be hair. For us, hair stands between getting a job or a house. It isn't as simple as people telling us to change it. We have to change it to be able to survive in America and possibly around the world.
Also I'm not trying to be rude, but there are many privileged standpoints here. There are hardly any people who are POC and would be affected by this issue speaking. Just people complaining about sensitivity.
