This lesson contains a PICTURE assignment.
"Your lesson today is going to be about constellations. Constellations are a group of stars forming a recognizable pattern that is traditionally named after its apparent form or identified with a mythological figure. One of the most famous would be Orion and his Belt, as shown here." At her words, Professor Sinistra took out her wand, where a bright silver ribbon came out of the tip and flew into the sky, drawing a picture over the constellation of Orion and his Belt for all to see.

"Orion's Belt or the Belt of Orion, also known as the Three Kings or Three Sisters, is an asterism in the constellation Orion. It consists of the three bright stars Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka.
Looking for Orion's Belt in the night sky is the easiest way to locate Orion in the sky. The stars are more or less evenly spaced in a straight line, and so can be visualized as the belt of the hunter's clothing. They are best visible in the early night sky during the Northern Winter/Southern Summer, in particular the month of January at around 9.00 pm."
She clapped her hands and the picture disappeared, before she took out her wand and created another.

"Hydra is the largest of the 88 modern constellations, measuring 1303 square degrees. Also one of the longest at over 100 degrees, its southern end abuts Libra and Centaurus and its northern end borders Cancer. It has a long history, having been included among the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy. It is commonly represented as a water snake."
She sighed whistfully and then shook her head as if clearing it. "One day I will visit a star, just jump on a broomstick and go there! Well... probably not, I doubt a broom will ever be able to sustain an artificial atmosphere or travel faster than the speed of light!" She laughed and shook her head again. "Anyway! On to your assignment, it'll be really fun and I can't wait to see them."
Your assignment today includes a picture that I magicked up of a random set of stars. These stars do not actually appear in our night sky, but for the purpose of your homework I would like you to use your imagination. What you have to do, is create your own constellation! What it means, which stars are involved, what it looks like! All you have to do, is draw lines between the stars, like you find in the earlier star charts as part of our lesson. Have fun, be creative, and really think outside the box!

Each assignment turned in will be given 10 house points.
1.) Post your completed picture on this thread 2.) Also include what your constellation is, what it means, and (for bonus) maybe a backstory or who discovered it 3.) Eye catching, creative, or cool constellations will receive a bonus 5 house points!
Note: If you do not have MS Paint or any kind of picture editor, there is an online program located Here that you can use to make your picture!

My constellation is called The Triangular constellation and represents the triangulation theory. Triangulation is often used to indicate that two (or more) methods are used in a study in order to check the results of one and the same subject. "The concept of triangulation is borrowed from navigational and land surveying techniques that determine a single point in space with the convergence of measurements taken from two other distinct points." The idea is that one can be more confident with a result if different methods lead to the same result.
Discovered by Scalene in the 11th century, triangles have become integral to our modern way of life.

Constellation Acetias, the Moth

Beloved by wizards and muggles alike, Acetias is a genus of Saturniid moths, which contains the beautiful Luna Moth of the North American forests. Long tails on their hindwings are among their distinctive traits.
The brightest star in the constellation, Phalena, which forms the body of the moth, was named as an homage to the original name given the Luna moth by it's discoverer, Petiver in 1700
Pearlscale Constellation

The pearlscale constellation was discovered by accident, at the moment someone was searching the sky to have a glance of another recently discovered constellation. The person that discovered the constellation believed that it looked a lot like the Pearlscale fish and named the constellation after the fish. Besides the fish it was believed that the constellation also showed some bubbles. That fact makes that the constellation is often called Fish and Bubbles.

Constellation Nymphemus, the Weremaid
Discovered by the wizarding astronomer Edward Lupin circa 2017 after he successfully cast an ancient druidic charm that allows the caster to see even the most remote galaxies with the naked eye. Lupin was the first successful caster of this charm in more than 5 centuries. Nymphemus is named for Lupin's deceased parents, Nymphadora and Remus. The weremaid is a fictional creature Lupin created in his childhood when telling stories to his friend Lilly Luna Potter. In this way, the naming of the constellation is also a tribute to her.

This is the constellation Architeuthis, commonly known as the Giant Squid. It was first identified by wizarding philosopher Yorrick in 317 AD. He was often criticized for this discovery as the squid does not have the 8 arms typical of a true squid, but Yorrick reasoned that the constellation pictures a squid as one would see it from the front or side, stating that in such a case, not all of its arms would be visible either.

This constellation is called the Cured Cucumber. It was discovered around 850BC by a witch of the name Pythias. She was looking out at the sky when she noticed it floating in the sky and had to have it documented. It was around this time that the curative properties of the cured cucumber were being researched and she took it as a sign of good tidings and improved health. It is named for what it is, a Cured Cucumber (or, as it is commonly referred to today, The Pickle).

This constellation was named Asteroidea in 1476 by a French Astronomer named Mattieu Dieppeaux, and is commonly referred to as the "sea star constellation". It is named after the sea star's classification in biological taxonomy. Merpeople, however, have been looking to this constellation long before it was given a common name. Easily seen even through the surface of the water, due to the brightness of the stars at its points, the sea star constellation has been a central figure to merpeoples' spirituality for centuries.

This constellation is called Libellus, which is a Latin word meaning “little book”. It was discovered in the 1800’s by a group of witches who also first developed the idea of “book clubs”. They would ritualistically gather together and read by the light of the constellation, claiming that doing so increased their rate of understanding and comprehension. Eventually some schools would even offer to host these same sort of gatherings months prior to any academic testing for O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s
Assignment

The sign of the Deathly Hallows was found among the stars by long-time enthusiast Xenophillius Lovegood in the year of 1978 when he was perusing the stars for his own personal enjoyment. He submitted the discovery to be added to the the list of Constellations but wasn't taken seriously. After all, the Tale of the Three Brothers is only a myth. Or is it?

The constellation 'violino piccolo' was discovered in 1694 by an Italian muggle-born wizard named Armand Stradivari. Stradivari himself was quite talented at musical charmwork and fascinated with astrology. His family were reknowned the muggle world as fine makers of string instruments, a point often left out of wizarding accounts of his life.
The center and brightest star is known as Melodiam, latin for 'melody'. It is said that in the northern hemisphere during the summer months, Melodiam appears brightest in the early morning just before the sun rises and the birds begin to sing. The stars in this constellation appear quite close together, making it seem small in comparison to other constellations one might find in the night sky, hence the name: 'little violin'.

To follow suit with constellations having historical significance, The Unicorn was discovered after the Second Wizarding War and was so named for the unicorns slain by Lord Voldemort in his struggle to regain a body. It is a monstrous thing to slay a unicorn, and one must never forget how much innocence was lost in their massacre.

This constellation has been named the Cauldron. Some wizards and witches believe that this constellation was an attempt by their pureblood ancestors to prove that magic should reign over the natural world (in essence, wizards should rule muggles). Other see it as a sign that our ancestors were attempting to show that both community could live together, as another given name for this is the Melting Pot.

This is the constellation of Ullr, a Norse god. Ullr is an excellent archer, hunter, skater, and skier, handsome, warlike, and an especially apt deity to invoke before a duel. This is a relatively new constellation, founded only in the 1800s by Galti Oddleifsson. Galti is a pureblood wizard from Scandinavia. He fell in love with a pureblood wizard woman from a family who had a higher class than him. He went to the father of the woman and asked for her hand in marriage. The father refused, for Galti was poor and had little prospects. Galti was determined though, for 30 days he came back to the father with gifts/tributes. After the 30 days he asked the father again for the woman’s hand in marriage. The father still did not want to give permission, he however told Galti that if he could beat the a champion of the fathers choosing in magic then Galti could marry the woman.
Galti accepted the proposal and the duel was set for the next day. That night Galti sat under the stars and prayed to the Norse gods for the strength to beat his opponent and win his beloved. While sitting there the clouds moved across the sky and the stars lit up. Galti noticed that certain stars lit up more than others, as he gazed at those stars he heard a voice. “You are honest and your heart is pure. I, Ullr, will be by your side tomorrow. With courage and conviction you shall not fail.” After hearing these words Galti felt more confident, he went to bed and had dreams of the future he could see happening.
The next morning Galti woke up and dressed in his robes, ready to start the duel. He made his way to the father’s house feeling the god walking with him. As he neared the house he saw his opponent, not particularly big but he had an aura surrounding him that was mighty. Galti walked up the man and bowed. The father stood to the side with the woman, “Now let the duel begin, wands at the ready.”
Galti raised his wand, “Impedimenta!”
