I have always wondered why the Weasley's don't have a house elf too, especially since Ron says at some point that Molly has always wanted one. They're a very old bloodline, why don't they have one? very curious.

Also, someone mentioned earlier (I think it was ) that they were amazed by how early JKR foreshadows some things and how she sets them up... That is one of the reasons I LOVE re-reading (and re-listening to) the books, I always find new little things I never noticed before. She's a master <3

Thank you! On the side note, though, I do imagine Harry and Draco's relationship could have taken a different path if Harry was sorted in Slytherin. Also maybe Snape would not be blinded by the prejudice against James Potter, a token Gryffindor.

I wondered that about the Weasleys. How can Wizards be poor??? Rowling is awesome. She really created a micro-world. I read in HarryPotter wikipedia that Malfoy's wife (unnamed in the movie) refused to use the term mudblood and that because of her views there was tension with the in-laws (and that maybe Draco changed his ways) and all stuff about her being in Slytherin and her older sister being in Malfoy's class. So much more info than in the books and movies! Potterworld indeed! (I watched Harry Potter 7 , both parts yesterday. 5 hours!!!!)

That's a great question! Got my head in a spin at the possibilities. I think I would be a guy, and go pray in a certain place. Nice thought.

This is what Fred Weasley had to say about Dobby: "'Well, whoever owns him will be an old wizarding family, and they'll be rich.'"

George added: "'House-elves come with big old manors and castles and places like that; you wouldn't catch one in our house. . . .'"

The Weasleys are an old bloodline but they don't mix with upper crust society because of their humble financial situation and their disdain for the pureblood doctrine. They're referred to as "blood traitors" by elite pure-bloods.

I think wizards and witches can be poor because magic isn't an advantage when everyone else has it too.

How can magic NOT be an advantage? What's to spend one's gold on, if you can make things materialize out of thin air? One needs furniture, it's there. Clothes: reparo. Why pay electricity bills, one can create their own windmill or electricity storage or whatever. They don't have cell phones, insurance premiums, cars and all the expense that goes with that. School seems to be free, small price: they have to buy books and robes.

I would totally be a "blood-traitor" if we had magic. ;P

I found this interview with J.K. Rowling because I had a hard time thinking about the Potterverse using the lens of our world. Remus Lupin and the Weasleys definitely stand out as people who are talented but poor, since many of the characters don't struggle financially.

"Q: It seems that the wizards and witches at Hogwarts are able to conjure up many things, such as food for the feasts, chairs and sleeping bags. . .if this is so, why does the wizarding world need money ? What are the limitations on the material objects you can conjure up ? It seems unnecessary that the Weasleys would be in such need of money. . . (Jan Campbell) A: Very good question (well done, Jan!!). There is legislation about what you can conjure and what you can't. Something that you conjure out of thin air will not last. This is a rule I set down for myself early on. I love these logical questions!"

I recently got my hands on a copy of the illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone. It is too gorgeous for words. Jim Kay is currently working on Chamber of Secrets! c:

So they can conjure a chair to sit on because it can/will disappear. But can't conjure gold. Makes sense. How will it not last though? Just fade away? Imagine conjuring a room to hide in and suddenly you are standing in a meadow without that room? ;)

Adding you now, welcome!

It's a large, heavy hardcover book with a ribbon bookmark and very good quality paper!

I had forgotten that by the second book, many people believe the Defense Against the Dark Arts position at Hogwarts is cursed. Dumbledore hires Lockhart because he's the only candidate to apply, period.

Harry thinks that Hagrid is enlarging pumpkins for the Halloween feast using magic performed with the pink umbrella that contains his wand. What do you think happens to people who are expelled from Hogwarts and get their wands snapped?

Dang! I answered this and the post send must have glitched.

I don't see how they can take away a wizards wand. It's theirs!

I agree with it is easy to figure out why they don't have a house-elf. Also as a home caretaker (with only 2 people) I would also want a house elf! I mean Molly Weasley has a house full of boys... there isn't enough magic to keep a house organized hehehe

I really need to catch up.

Please take this next week to procure a copy of Quidditch Through the Ages and feel free to discuss anything about HP2. I'll be covering a lot when I get back.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Have a great holiday weekend!

(I got the three books and reading the Beast and Beedle but Quidditch is least keeping my attention...)

Some questions for everyone: Does anyone else wonder why Hermione was so inept during Dueling Club? Couldn't she have easily used her superior magic skills on Millicent Bulstrode and avoided physically fighting her altogether? Do you think she fought her on purpose to get near her for the Polyjuice Potion?

Moaning Myrtle was killed by the basilisk. If she spends all of her time in the girls' bathroom, then she must have noticed it with Ginny right? Why doesn't she say anything?

Why do you think Rowling omitted Hermione from the Polyjuice Potion spy mission when she was the brains behind the operation?

What exactly happened to Harry when he viewed Riddle's memory? What are your thoughts of the first glance that readers get of Tom Riddle and pre-Harry Hogwarts?
