Max nervously takes a step forward. Drawing his wand out he takes a deep breath. Swallowing he points the wand towards his target. Taking a deep breath he shouts: in-CEN-dee-oh TRIE-ah. Nothing happens. Frowning Max looks at his wand. Determinated he tries again, murmuring this time: in-SEN-dee-oh TREE-ah. A powerful stream of fire comes out of the tip of his wand and hits the inferi with full force.

Flicking her long, furry tail, Wolf made her way towards the creature facing her. As human as she was, she was given the gift of ears and a tail from her furry adopted parents. As magic laws work differently for magical wolf packs, she learned a few things that most witches and wizards her age may not have learned. 'Hmmm...' she thought, 'there's this one lighting one I know of but not 100%. Last I tried it I was at about 75% ability. No harm in trying though.' Looking at the professor she said, "The spell I'll be trying is Magna Tonitrus, the Lightning Curse." Raising her wand, she pointed it directly at the Inferi facing her, "Magna Tonitrus (Magna ton-EE-truhs)!" A flash of white hot lightning emitted from her wand, striking the Inferi in the shoulder instead of the heart like she was planning on doing. It was with a lot of force, but, very unfortunately, instead of it doing any kind of burning or incineration, it wound up blasting the Inferi into the air and it landing directly on the Professor himself! Wincing greatly, Wolf runs over to him, expressing all kinds of apologies. She drags the now lifeless Inferi off Professor Valdez and helps him up.

"Well," Wolf says sheepishly, "at least it's dead now?" Wincing further she retreats back to her seat, avoiding Valdez's eyes.

"I hope this works," thought Poppy as she opened the largest window. She was hoping that her mastery of a basic spell would get her through the lesson, because she certainly wasn't skilled enough to try to produce her own OWL or NEWT-level fire spell. Even her Incendios weren't particularly powerful.

"Accio!" she said loudly, picturing her target clearly and brandishing her wand with force. Luckily the baby Common Welsh Green dragon she had seen with Professor Sparks was not too far beyond Professor Valdez's window outside. She had failed to summon both inanimate and living things many times before, but had gotten a little help practicing with a Slytherin Seventh year who was particular adept at handling magical creatures and was also very handy with Charm work.

Clover sailed into the classroom on a smooth glide, shot a small but strong stream of fire at the Inferi, and then promptly tried to eat someone's pet toad snoozing in a patch of sunlight. "I'm very sorry!" Poppy shouted, practically pushing Clover back out of the window.

The classroom had quickly turned chaotic as each student took their turn casting whatever spells they thought best applied to the assignment. Fade watched quietly until he was called forward. Pushing back the sleeves of his robe he held his wand firmly and took a deep breath. Most of the others had used incendiary spells, Fade was going to try something a little different. This was a defense class after all, may as well use a defensive charm.

Clearing his throat he nodded at Professor Valdez and explained. “Some say the best offence is a good defense.” Then, taking up the proper stance as illustrated in his text book, one foot slightly in front of the other, his body angled sideways, he flicked his wand in an arch from his left hip to above his head on the right hand side. Simultaneously with the movement he loudly proclaimed “Proh-TAY-goh”.

At first nothing seemed to have happened and Fade could have sworn he heard a few students behind him snicker at his obvious failure. Casually he reached into his pocket and pulled out a Bertie Botts Every Flavor Bean that a friend had given him before class. With the flick of his thumb he sent the bean hurdling toward the Professor standing opposite the class. Suddenly a small yet very bright flash of light erupted where the bean met Fade’s successfully cast shield charm. On impact the bean ricocheted backwards into the mass of students behind him still waiting their turn. With the smallest hint of a grin threatening to crack his usually stoic expression, Fade retreated back to his seat.

Ceilidh waited her turn, trying not to freak out too much over the idea of casting a spell in front of her classmates. She thought that incendio was probably her best bet. She'd had some practice with that one, at least.

Finally, it was her turn. Wand at the ready, she stepped up to bat. "Incendio!" The word was correctly pronounced, but obviously she wasn't confident. Nothing notable happened. "Let me try again." she said quickly to the professor, face reddening.

This time, she took a moment to ground herself. She's a worthy witch, she's catching on quickly. She can do this!

"Incendio!" This time, the word was confidently said, correctly pronounced, and the spell perfectly executed. The makeshift Inferi ignites itself, the flames strong and spreading quickly. It wasn't flashy, nor was it go-big-or-go-home. It was exactly what was needed, and it did the job quite well, in her opinion. There's a hopeful smile at the professor, then she's moving back for the next person.

As Elune stepped toward the dummy, she nervously bit her bottom lip. She wished she had read up on more complex light and fire spells before entering the class, but, instead, she could only think of the few jinxes she had parried with her sister.

Seeing that there was only one dummy in the room, she cast the only light spell she was familiar with--"Lumos." While rather simple, her wand cast a steady bright light--one she believed could easily fiend off one of these creatures for one minute.

She hesitated then to think of a spell that could cause an Inferi to be stuck long enough for her to escape. She raised her wand in an arch pattern and whispered, "Mobilicorpus." As the Lumos died, she imagined the Inferi clawing and wailing toward her, whilst it hovered in the air. She cringed but steadied her wand hand. Then, she looked directly into the dummy's eyes and cast an "Orbis jinx."

The dummy half-hazardously flew downward, burrowing itself into the wooden floorboards. Only its head appeared peaking through the floor, although a proper "Orbis" should bury an opponent much deeper. She considered that a real Inferi would be seething by this partially-executed-spell, but, even so, this was decent enough work. She believed the Inferi would need at least several minutes to claw its way out (and more time depending on the type of ground or floor). Although, she wasn't sure one would be packed so tightly in new soil.

Aderyn stepped forward as her turn came up, clearing her throat and raising her wand. She glanced at the professor for a moment, making sure his attention was on her so that he did not miss her speaking. Her soft voice and overall quiet disposition meant that things she said were often missed by those not paying direct attention, so she’d learned to be patient until she knew she could make herself heard.

“I’ve been attempting to conjure a patronus throughout the term,” she said softly. “I haven’t had too much success, but as patronuses give off a rather intense, silvery glow when fully formed, I believe the spell would suffice to keep an inferius at bay.”

She shifted her weight a little from foot to foot, silently wishing the words hadn’t come out of her mouth. She was far too new at magic to cast a proper patronus, especially without an actual enemy before her to give her the adrenaline she needed to bolster her emotions and give true form to her patronus. Still, she figured she’d committed and so she decided to go ahead, fearing the worst.

Closing her eyes, Aderyn took a deep breath and tried to calm her racing heart. She wasn’t a fan of being at the centre of a group of people, even if they were her peers, and her stage fright was making it difficult for her to conjure a happy image. Still, powering through her fear, she imagined her sixth birthday – it was the first and last time both of her parents had been home for the celebration, and it had been a brilliant day. The sun had been shining brightly, the birds had been singing, and for once there hadn’t been a single cloud on the horizon. Her mother had cast a disillusionment charm on the house and yard to keep the muggles from noticing that anything was amiss and her father had entertained her with displays of fireworks, myth, and magic. She’d been lavished with gifts and she’d gotten her first owl – a beautiful tawny bird named Hygeia. Later on in the night, they’d feasted on all manner of treats. The last thing she remembered was falling asleep between her parents in their bed, with her mother singing her a lullaby and her father stroking her hair.

“Expecto patronum,” Aderyn incanted firmly, trying to channel her emotion into her words.

She opened one eye as she spoke the words and watched a wisp of silvery light shoot from the tip of her wand, arc a short ways, and explode in a shower of sparks. Frowning, she opened the other eye, too, and put her wand down. It wasn’t even close to the kind of success she’d had on her own when she’d practiced, but it was something. Nothing quite as impressive as the faint shadow of a black bear she’d managed to conjure a single time, but it was a light show that would have given an inferius pause nevertheless.

“Rats,” Aderyn murmured.

Turning on her heel, she strode off to the sidelines, giving the next student a chance to try their hand. Sulking inwardly, her dreams of inheriting at least some of her mother’s proficiency in defensive magic were dashed. She was brilliant with books and could recite the history and theory of the patronus charm from memory, but it appeared as though she’d have to work harder still to make the magic really work.

Vin wasn't sure exactly what to do. He usually just practiced different spells on his own when he was teaching himself wizardry. He watched as other people simply shown a little bit of light at the mannequin, and that was all. He also witnessed a few other people doing really overly complex sequences of spells that would honestly be ineffective in this sort of situation.

Vin scratched his head for a bit, before thinking of something. He stopped a bit aways from the mannequin once his turn had come. He smiled a bit before flicking his wand at the mannequin, saying, "Melofors (Mell-oh-fors)!", incasing the mannequin's head in a pumpkin. He then chained it with a quick strike towards the pumpkin-headed zombie mannequin, shouting "Confringo (kon-fring-oh)!" A moment passed where nothing really happened. He frowned a bit before sighing. As it seemed he was about to return to his seat, he flashed a quick smile, the pumpkin then suddenly exploding into a fiery ball of gourd, lighting parts of the mannequin itself ablaze as well. He then continued by explaining to the professor why he chose that sequence of spells.

"I first used melofors to disorient the inferi so that it's assault was stopped. This gave me plenty of time to cast Confringo, and light it on fire." Vin said with finality, sitting back in his seat.

Gwen steps forward, she is nervous but confident in her spell work. She wishes though that everyone wasn’t watching her.

“Um… I will be showing you the…. Um…. Fire… um… Rope. The Fire rope spell. This spell... would be good I think.... because it circles around... and could protect.”

Gwen takes her wand and makes a whip-like wave motion above her head, she says softly but with conviction, “Flamma Serpens Impetums!”

(fl-amma ser-pen-z IMPET-imz)

A long rope of flame shoots from her wand dancing and twisting to the ground.

Beth watched as each of her classmates took turns attacking the mannequin. She became more and more nervous as each student attacked it. She had no idea what spell to use. She had read about the inferi and learned many spells, but she never had a chance to practice them. She nervously bit her lip as she pondered some more. She stepped forward once it was her turn and took a deep breath. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, she thought to herself.

She had read about Fiendfyre, a curse that produced a powerful bewitched flame, but she was not advanced enough in her skills to use the curse; although the curse is easy to unleash, it is very difficult for inexperienced casters to control the flames from spreading, which would most likely get her into trouble than help her in class. Most of her classmates had used spells that produced light or flames, many spells that she herself would have thought of using.

Without another thought, Beth thoroughly searched her backpack and grabbed an apple that she had saved for a snack. She pointed her wand toward the apple and shouted, "wing-GAR-dee-um levi-O-sa" (Wingardium Leviosa) while making the proper hand movement.

As the apple floated above her, she yelled "flah-GRAHN-tay" (Flagrante Curse), which caused the apple to burn on contact with whatever it touches. She flicked her wand and caused the apple to hit the mannequin. Upon impact, the mannequin caught flame and burned. “I chose the Flagrante Curse as it causes an object to emit searing heat upon impact with another object. It can also be used with the Gemino Curse which would be much more effective.”
