Elune has heard many rumors about the infamous Womping Willow but never imagined she would stand this closeby. She squints toward the tree and notices fellow Ravenclaws Sar, Emryse, and Emma picking through the branches and testing them out. A slight shiver crosses her spine. Her seagull, Salmon-guise, ruffles its feathers and nips at Elune's ear, giving her encouragement to brave the walk. He plunges gracefully off her shoulder and swoops around the tree, flying in between branches with precision. As he makes his way back, he lands on the ground and begins searching for nearby giant-grubs to feed on.

Elune takes a few deep breaths and holds her last inhale. Then, she walks toward her classmates. When she reaches the border, she steps on a broken twig and watches it squirm and bat underneath her shoe. Stepping back, she gulps and decides not to mess with that piece.

"Professor Morgan, does this mean that some of the willow branches still have reflexes after being severed?" she asks, aghast.

Elune selects a different, stagnant branch this time. Afraid that this twig might bat at her as well, she decides not to break it but, rather, tilts it vertically until sap drips onto her hand. She watches cringe at the flavor, so she just barely licks her hand. Hmmm, that's curious... She tries it again with more enthusiasm and finds that certain parts of her tongue palate actually appreciate the flavor. She recalls a time from her muggle anatomy class where she studied recessive gene traits with bitter chocolate and how she adored the taste. She sniffs the stem and finds that it does, indeed, smell acidic. She decides to wrap the rest of her twig in parchment so that she may transfer the sap to a vial later. Perhaps she can use it on a cut or bruise when one arises.

Elune glances at Emryse (), , and and smiles shyly. "Erm, it's nice to see some fellow Ravenclaws here. I'm Elune."

That's a smart idea taking notes. Maybe we should make a study-group sometime and share ideas/notes?

Tate watched her fellow classmates being to break the twigs and cautiously made her way to pick one up. Picking up a medium sized twig, which was slightly heavier than she expected, she gazed up at the giant Willow tree. "You're not that scary" She whispers as she effortlessly snaps the twig in half, instantly getting sappy fingers. Rubbing her fingers together, she brought them close to her nose and took a whiff, her eyes instantly watering "Oh Dang that's strong"She giggled, wiping away a tear with her wrist.

Carefully pulling down her sock, Tate revealed a nice sized scrape on her knee that she actually got on her way to class she sighed thinking about the embarrassing moment. She generously rubs sap onto her knee and is in disbelief at how it healed so fast right in front of her very own eyes. Looking around at her classmates, Tate smiled because they all seemed to have had the same reaction to the healing. "And last but not least" She quickly licked her finger, getting most of the sap off. To her surprise it wasn't as bad as she thought it was going to be, bitter yes, but not awful it reminded her of a time her sister made brownies....well tried to at least.

Amanda grabs her friends , , and and they start walking to the front to get their sticks. They stand and look at the willow for a moment, before carefully choosing their twigs.

Her twig was about 2 feet long, and rather thick in the middle. She ran her hand over the bark to see if she felt anything unusual. There is a piece of bark that is starting to peel, so she pulls on it to see what is directly under the bark. The bottom side was rather shiny, and if she ran her finger across it her fingertip had a tiny bit of sap on it. She smelled it before wiping her finger on the grass to keep going in her investigation.

Using her wand she cracks the twig open right in the middle with an angled cut so there was a large cross section of inner bark showing. There was a visible drop of sap running down one of the exposed portions. She quickly collected that on the tip of her wand and brought it closer to her face to investigate.

She rubbed the dollop of sap onto the scrape she had received from a clumsy mishap involving a fizzing whizbee and her cat Luna. The cut started to heal itself up immediately. Amanda looked up at her friends smiling in amazement.

Her thought about Luna made her think of something. She raised her hand and waited for Professor Morgan to make her way over to their group. "I was wondering if the properties of Womping Willow sap have the same effects on animals?"

She smiles to herself as she watches Beth's attentiveness. "Typical Ravenclaw, Miss Hale? Take 15 points for Ravenclaw."

"Excellent question, Setsu. I would not recommend using the sap in or near your eyes. It tends to sting quite a bit. It will still heal, of course, but it might not be worth it. 15 points for Ravenclaw for you, dear."

"Ah, yes, Elune. Sometimes the broken twigs will still have a bit of a kick to them. It's similar to if you squish a bug, the legs may twitch a bit after. However, most of the time they will be quite still. Excellent question, I assume you came upon one that happened to snap at you! Take 15 points for Ravenclaw."

Professor Morgan scratches her head. "It appears we have two Tates in the class! That'll make things a bit more difficult. Hopefully I'll be able to keep you two apart." She pauses, trying to remember the girl's last name. "Remind me, dear, what is your surname? Anyway, take 15 points for Slytherin."

She turns to Amanda. "The healing properties are still there for animals, however, some animals can be sensitive toward the potency and may develop a skin irritation. It's not something I'd recommend using on animals, especially rabbits or rats. 15 points to Ravenclaw for you."

Simon watched anxiously from the front ring of the class during the whole of Professor Morgan's lesson. He had read about Whomping Willows before, but he had never been brave enough to venture this close to the one that adorned the grounds of Hogwarts. He quickly scribbled notes as the professor talked, keeping in mind that Herbology and Potions would be crucial subjects toward his goal of becoming an apothecary.

When they were given the cue to leave the boundaries of the the shield charm, the Ravenclaw hesitated, fussing with his hair and notes a little as the other students began to venture forward. He would never be one to charge brazenly into something without assessing things first. During his first year, he had wandered down on numerous occasions to observe the tree. One foggy morning stood clearly in his mind, when he witnessed the willow swatting at a group of ravens that were attempting to forage in the surrounding grass, its branches having a far greater reach than he would have expected. The analogy wasn't lost on him as the birds narrowly avoided being lashed or crushed, leaving their black feathers scattered among the roots.

Simon brushed the hair from his eyes once more before cautiously stepping forward. He picked out a good-sized branch that retained both its bark and a few leaves before retreating back closer to the rocks. Using a quick spell to cut the branch cleanly at an angle, the young wizard pulled some vials out of his satchel, bottling various samples for later.

He sniffed the cropped end and noted the scent as being vaguely medicinal, although the lingering odor reminded him of the time he and his sister had tried concocting some horrid hot cereal for breakfast containing laver and oats. He then smeared the sap on some cat scratches he obtained when coming between his roommate's tabby and his rat, Periwink, and was delighted to see them disappear almost instantly.

As if on cue, the rodent poked her head out Simon's bag and sniffed his hand, sneezing a little at strange-smelling salve before burrowing back into her little nest of parchment.

The Ravenclaw watched the grimacing faces of the other students for a moment before bracing himself and darting his tongue along the beading sap. He felt the muscles in the jaw constrict instantly and attempted to wipe his mouth on his sleeve- it tasted about as good as the laver and oat cereal had too.

Simon recorded his findings and samples in his notes before quietly observing the other students. After a moment, he raised his hand hesitantly and asked, "Professor, do you know if there's been any research done on the healing properties of the willow in regards to antidotes for poison? And would you say that it's superior to Murtlap essence for healing boils caused by a jinx?"

Pem glanced to the 'typical Ravenclaw', the phrase struck her oddly and she frowned. Turning she walked towards the back of the group and proceeded to perform another drum solo with her back to the crowd. Boredom, her constant companion...well besides her rat, Nugget. She paused in her tapping concert and tied her green dreads up in a bun. Using rocks, she tapped away, ignoring the droning of the other classmates. Why Hufflepuff? I'm not hardworking, I hate hard work. I thought I was smart enough for Ravenclaw., fumbling a twirl, a stick flew from her fingers and fell off to the side.

Standing near her Hufflepuff classmates, Rose listened in awe as Professor Morgan taught them about the Whomping Willow. She had never seen such a tree and could never have imagined such a tree even existed, for that matter. When she had first set eyes on it, she had believed it to be a very large variety of the standard willow tree. And if the tree itself weren't incredible enough, the properties of the sap were simply unbelievable.

Rose waited patiently for her turn as everyone eagerly went in for a branch. She was quite excited to grab one for herself, but she knew there would be plenty of twigs to go around and felt no need to jostle her way to the front of the crowd.

Once it had quieted down a bit and most of her classmates had chosen their sticks, she walked up to the small stack that was left and picked the first one off the top. It was a bit thicker than its brothers, and it was quite firm, as well. Rose enthusiastically tried snapping it in half, but it was a tough one. Finally, she managed to split it; however, she broke it so forcefully that she ended up splattering her face with the bitter sap.

Blushing, Rose hastily tried to wipe the sticky substance off of her face. As she did so, she inadvertently spread some over a rather large pimple on her chin. In just a few seconds, she realized the pimple had shrunken away and was no longer sore. Surprised and a bit startled at this discovery, she spread the rest of the sap over her face as if she was applying some sort of facial mask. Well, I suppose a pimple could be considered a type of infection, she thought, still a bit incredulous.

After all the sticky sap had been absorbed, Rose decided she ought to try to sample the sap. She went ahead and grabbed a new branch, this one a bit more supple, and carefully snapped it in two. A couple quick sniffs left her searching for a description. It was indeed pungent, but after the initial accost on her olfactory organs, she decided it wasn't terrible. It smelled a bit like a bog that she had visited once, with a dash of vinegar, but it also smelled a bit like... what was that other smell... juniper, maybe?

Tentatively, Rose stuck her tongue out and took a little lick. She swirled the sap around in her mouth, trying not to cringe. It was ten times as bitter as dandelion greens and had a slightly sour aftertaste that reminded her distinctly of raw rhubarb.

Shyly, Rose shuffled a bit nearer to her professor. "Professor Morgan," she began, "how do these trees reproduce? Do they flower and produce seeds? Or is their reproduction more complicated due to their sentience?"

Julia Smythe was none too happy after Dueling Club the night before; her wand had been misfiring, she had been trying new spells, and she had lost to a Hufflepuff of all things. Still, she did her best to focus on the tree, and the professor. When the lecture portion was done, she exited the shield and to the pile of twigs. She stared at it for a few moments, and selected one of the juicier looking ones before retreating back a few more steps from the thrashing boughs.

Giving it a sniff, she frowned, and tasted it against her better wishes. Maybe it was good for fixing broken bones, but it was less than savory. She glanced at the green-haired Hufflepuff nearby, drumming away, and shrugged as she smoothed some of the sap over a torn cuticle. It healed quickly, and she smiled, and wondered if it had any anti-aging properties.

“Lyn, what do you think the twig and sap smell like?”

“Hold. On. A minute.” Lyn couldn’t help but grunt out her answer. For the past few minutes, Lyn had been pulling at a particularly difficult twig (part of her wondered if it was even a twig at this point). She should have just moved on to another twig after the first failed attempts, but Lyn had her eyes stubbornly set on this particular one. She was definitely not giving up, not after the time and effort she had put into it. After a few more seconds, she could finally feel the surrounding dirt loosen. Adjusting her grip, Lyn gave it another couple strong tugs. With one last tug, the twig unhinged itself from the ground.

“Got it-!” The twig finally gave way, but unfortunately for Lyn, so did she; the few steps she took to balance herself only led to her legs catching onto the bent figure of one of her fellow classmates, sending her flying into the dirt face first. A concerned Beth rushed over to her sister as she lay flat on the ground. “Are you okay?”

An arm shot up in Beth’s direction, twig in hand, followed by a muffled “I’m okay!”

Lyn propped herself onto her knees as she glanced back towards the cause of her eventual meeting with the ground. Smiling awkwardly as she met their gaze, she waved a small apology to her classmate before returning to their own respective inspections. Standing up with Beth’s help, Lyn began to pat dirt out of her clothes, mentally cursing for giving herself a once unnecessary trip to the Hogwarts laundry followed by a quick trip to the Gryffindor baths after class. Sensing the dirt undoubtedly covering her face, she made an attempt to rub at her cheeks a bit before deeming it pointless. “This is the worst,” she thought before returning her attention to the task at hand.

Lyn lifted the twig up to her face and inhaled deeply. One sniff was enough for her to immediately regret her decision, a scowl etched across her face as she practically chucked it away. ”On second thought, I could smell like this! Phew!”

“So?”

“That was God awful!”

“Try the sap.”

Without another thought Lyn snapped the twig in half, taking one of the glass vials she received at the end of the lecture from her pocket and filling it with sap slowly flowing out from the first half. Closing the vial, she observed the enclosed sap's color in the afternoon light. As she slipped it back into her pocket, Lyn decided to drip the last bit of sap onto her hands. “Whoa…” Lyn was left in awe as the small scratches she had on her palms from her earlier struggle began to close up right before her eyes. “I’m pretty sure I may have gotten dirt in some of these… I wonder if it prevents infection? Better ask Professor Morgan after I finish.”

Lyn stuck her tongue out and waited for the sap to drip down from the second twig half. Her nose wrinkled as she grimaced deeply the second the bitter taste filled her mouth, her previous awe once again returning to questioning disgust. “Yep, you can definitely tell they use this in medicine...” After the initial shock from the taste wore off, Lyn was suddenly hit with a curious thought. “Maybe the taste changes the more times you try it?” Once again, she dripped sap into her mouth, only to start gagging once more. “Nope![sub]cough[/sub] Still awful![sub]cough[/sub]”

She winced and apologized as she pulled apart a twig and breathed deeply. She put the sap in a vial and brushed the end of the stick over her jagged nails. Much to her surprise they evened out and seemed to become stronger. She wondered aloud in a voice she wasn't sure was quite audible "What would happen if you gave this to an injured werewolf.. would.. would they be stuck like that or turn human again?" She got nervous as she realized she actually said that out loud and started to bite her nails again, always, the habit. But she realized they were bitter and stopped immediately. Jumping slightly at Amanda's touch, he realized that he had been staring off into space, and followed her toward the pile of twigs. Selecting a smaller twig he lifted it to his face and sniffed it slightly. Recoiling he stuck out his tongue in revulsion. "Smells like aspirin..." Assuming it would probably taste similar to the muggle remedy, he refrained from putting it on his tongue. Listening to the coughs of his classmates affirmed his assumption. Instead, peeling a bit of the bark back, Fade pressed his finger into the opening and then rubbed his fingers together. It was sticky and if there was one thing he hated, it was being sticky... Whatever cuts and bruises he had leftover from his first lesson on a broomstick, it wasn't anything he was willing to rub sticky sap into, no matter what the healing properties.

Still rubbing his fingers together, Fade listened to Amanda's question about animals and Professor’s reply. A small laugh slipped out as he considered how his cat Chase would react to the administration of such a potion. As the laugh subsided, Fade frowned down at his hand realizing that the sap was still sticking strong. "If it wasn't so hard to get, you could make adhesive out of this... World's most expensive, weird smelling, wound mending glue." Realizing he probably sounded like an idiot his pale skin turned a rosy pink, and his soft pastel hair darkened considerably into a deep violet hue.

As the class trouped across the campus, Ethel let herself drift toward the back of the group. She felt more comfortable with a healthy buffer of bodies between her and the possibility of being put on the spot to answer a question.

This didn't mean that she wasn't paying attention. While she lurked at the back of the group her ears were wide open, and after the lecture was open she listened dutifully to her clever classmates' questions and her instructor's insightful input.

As she wended her way through the crowd, she managed a shy smile to the cluster (seemed rude to call them an unkindness, didn't it!) of her housemates but only hovered nervously for a moment before scuttling past. She'd have to work her way up to an introduction.

Ever the dutiful disciple, she took two twigs (in case one was a dud) and snapped them both in half. Two halves were dry as the dessert, so she discarded them and focused on the bits that were oozing sap.

The stuff didn't look too different, as sap went. Thick, brownish, sticky. Ethel poked her tongue out and took a taste. Eugh, definitely not a member of the Acer family.

Even as she grimaced, she could feel an odd tingle on the inside of her mouth, where she'd bitten the inside of her cheek yesterday. Imagine that! Ethel tapped the thumb and forefinger of one hand together absently, her saptacky fingertips pulling apart reluctantly.

"Professor Morgan!" She asked after a moment, wagging her twigs in lieu of raising her hand. "You mentioned that this sap was used as an ingredient in a few potions. Are there any spell ingredients that it wouldn't do well to mix this stuff with?" After a pause, she added, "And are there any factors that contraindications to the sap? Other than the ones you mentioned about the eyes and rabbits and stuff."

Megan walks confidently up to the stick pile, careful to stay within the boundary line. She picks through the pile and finds a nice, cylindrical twig. She takes her twig back to the grass outside the reach of the trees branches and pulls out one of the small potions bottle she carries with her at all times. Pulling the stopper, she breaks the twig in half and tilts the twig into the bottle so the sap collects inside. Once both twigs have been drained thoroughly, she sets them on her hard-backed journal that she carries to jot down notes on different plants and their properties. Taking out her silver knife used in potions for chopping ingredients, she slices the twigs in half, long-ways, to inspect the interior of the Whomping Willow's twigs.

Taking her quill and ink out, she opens her journal and notes down the inside of the twigs have triangular shapes she's never seen before in a tree. She makes sure to draw an example as best she can then sets aside the twigs and quill and ink to turn her attention to the sap. Removing the stopper once more she tilts the bottle to place a drop on her finger. Bringing it to her nose she inhales a scent that smells faintly of unripe blackberries. Megan takes a dab on her other finger and places it on her tongue letting the bitter taste overcome her sense before spitting it to the ground. She finds Professor Morgan was correct in the taste being bitter; in an unpleasant way it tastes of blackberries drenched in isopropyl alcohol. She takes a swig of water from her canteen to wash down the taste and rinse her mouth out.

Next she pulls out a cotton swab and stick one end into the sap. Examining her arm where she's recently obtained a cuts from thorn bushes, she takes the swab and brushes it over the cuts. Noting down the time it takes for the wounds to heal. She also takes note that the sap stings at first but after some time it brings a cooling sensation.

Once she finishes her notes, she replaces the stopper on the sap bottle and pulls out a small leather pouch for her twigs. She puts away her journal, quill and ink and walks up to Professor Morgan to explain her findings and inquires if she is allowed to keep the sap and twigs she's collected for further studying in her time off

Thana stands perfectly still and silent throughout the introductory lecture, listening to every word the professor utters. Respect for her betters is a quality that has been drilled into her, even if she does not find the subject matter especially enthralling. Plus, if she were moving about, she might get a smack from that tree.

Moving to select a smooth twig from the ordered pile, Thana wonders how best to test it. She pinches the wood between her fingers, noting that the bark is hard; no doubt to increase its offensive capabilities, as well as providing a last line of defence for the precious sap within. Seeing another student struggle to snap hers, Thana concludes that the flesh below the bark must be malleable. Again, not surprising; as the professor had demonstrated, those branches move like fully mobile, reinforced human limbs.

Time to open it up. Using her previously drawn conclusions to aid her, Thana jerks her wrist in a snap-twist motion. The twig cracks in two, one half dangling from the other by a thin scrap of wooden flesh. She blinks. Reminds me of that ghostly gentleman from the Hall... Shuddering at the memory of that display, Thana fully separates the two pieces, laying one upon the ground by her shoe. The other, she examines visually. The inside of the twig is lighter, with holes - veins? - from which a thick sap oozes. Bringing the twig to her nose, she sniffs the sap. "Ugh -" she mutters. If that tastes as bad as it smells...got to do as asked and try it out, though.

But this is actually pretty fun, Thana muses, a smile curling her lips. Reminds me of those adventures in the garden, Thana brings the twig to her lips. Only me this time, though. She pauses, the movement - or the memory - stirring a familiar twinging ache. Sh..should I..? she wonders, ..would it? Surely there's no harm in it? She surveys those around her briefly; all focused upon their own research. Nobody is watching me.. With a slight nod to herself, Thana quickly fumbles with her tie, pulling the green and sliver silk loose enough to free her shirt collar. Undoing a couple of buttons, the shirt and robe shift smoothly. She looks around again, aware that if anyone catches sight of her it may appear...odd. I'll just say I have a huge bruise here, she thinks to herself, her smile turning almost grim.

Thana scoops up as much of the sap as she can across two fingers of her right hand, lifting the loose areas of shirt with her left. She knows what to expect, but still grimaces at the sight waiting for her. It is as she remembers. Angry, raised edges, a rough tangle of flesh half turned to scarring. Burning, red and jagged, as though the injury was fresh and all but unhealed. It's been months.. she thinks, pushing back the dismay. Ignoring the surge of shame. Clamping down on the bubbling memories threatening to rise to the surface. Breathing deeply, Thana hastily daubs the sap upon the closed wound, wincing at the sting. She glances up, noticing a few students finishing their experiments beginning to look around at the efforts of others - she quickly shifts her robes back into their correct position, tightening her tie.

Shaken by her own memories, cursing herself for risking a breakdown right here in front of everyone, Thana returns to her experiments. Rubs sap onto a bruise on her ankle; watches it fade. Likewise with an insect bite on her chin. Her earlier worries about the taste forgotten, she sucks on the twig to consume the small amount left within that piece. Bitter she confirms, struggling to feel a connection with the task at hand, mind still firmly fixed upon her shoulder. The urge to check the wound is too much to ignore. The hope she feels, almost sickening. Aware that others may be watching, Thana pens her findings into a notebook. Nobody observes a person writing notes for that long. Finally seeing an opportunity, she drops the notebook and moves to view her shoulder. This time, Thana has to peel the material of her shirt away from the sticky sap coating her skin. The ugly gash remains - perhaps a little less redness - but otherwise unchanged. The sap healed those other hurts so quickly.. she recalled. ..why did I ever think that might work. Nothing else ever has.

Crestfallen, Thana slips the used piece of twig into a small bag kept within her pocket. The other piece, she positions open-end-down in the mouth of a vial, placing that within the bag to drain. Her pained mind cries out for a distraction. She watches the nearby students carefully, chewing her lip. Still, the lesson wasn't bad. Would have been nothing but fun, if I hadn't gone and..done that. And even that..well, it was at least interesting. As an experiment. Plus - she wiggles her shoulder, noticing the usual sharp twinge has actually lessened into a mere dull ache, - the sap did make the wound less red and sore...maybe Herbology might turn out to be quite a valuable subject?

"Thank you, Professor Morgan." she says simply as the tutor passes, nodding her gratitude. "I enjoyed your lesson very much."

There's something about how they react together that just doesn't nullify the toxin. As for your question on Murtlap essence, I've never tried using it on boils before. If I ever have the need to try it, I'll let you know. 15 points to Ravenclaw."

She walked around the students, observing their experimenting. She passed by Rose just as she had asked her question. "Yes, they do flower and produce seeds, however it is not every year like most trees. It may be three or four years before a Whomping Willow flowers again, and even then it is difficult for the tree to reproduce. That's why the trees are so rare. 15 points to Hufflepuff, Miss Thorn."

Turning her attention back to the other students, she noticed that the broken and sapless twigs are starting to pile up. Professor Morgan flicked her wand and the broken ones floated off to the side, leaving only the ones left untouched. Once done, she watched the students once more.

"Miss Smythe, 15 points to Slytherin. Miss Hale... the other Miss Hale, 15 points to Gryffindor."

She then turned to Chrystle. "15 points to Hufflepuff, dear. And I'm unsure what your question was... do you mean would it cure someone of being a werewolf? Or do you mean just curing the injuries sustained as a werewolf?" After a pause, she decided not to wait for an answer. "The willow's sap will not cure one of being a werewolf. There is no cure to being a werewolf that we've yet discovered. As for if the sap will work on a werewolf, most definitely! If it works on humans and works on animals, then it should still work find on a hybrid, of course."

She tapped on Fade's shoulder and smiled. "15 points to Ravenclaw, dear. 15 points to Hufflepuff as well, Megan. 15 points to Thana too!"

"As for you Miss Blackwood and for Ethel as well, 15 points each for Slytherin and Ravenclaw. As for your question, Ethel, I am actually not sure about what should not be mixed with the sap. Unfortunately, I'm not an expert at brewing the potions the sap uses. Perhaps you should hold onto that question for Professor Mathers. Miss Beth Hale, when you say eyesight, do you mean as in blindness or as in needing corrective lenses, or something different? As I believe I've said previously, it's not generally used in eyes, as it stings something awful. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't cure either of those things. It is something I will need to research. Your questions, with Miss Blackwood's, are both ones I will have to research further into."

Professor Morgan rubbed her temples and closed her eyes. "I hope I answered everyone's questions. It's hard to keep up with all of them and keep watch at the same time."
