Broomstick Spell
As the muggle and magical worlds continue to infringe on each other, the need for stealth and privacy in the magical community grow more important. Stealth charms, or obfuscation charms, should be standard in all broomsticks to prevent unnecessary use of the Obliviate spell on muggles. A broomstick manufacturer advertising such a charm would likely see their sales increased.
Wand Woods and Broomsticks
While the practical effects of crafting brooms from wand wood have yet to be thoroughly tested, theory and anecdotal evidence suggest that such woods may improve broomstick maneuverability and speed.
The ability of wand woods to channel and enhance magic has been empirically tested and validated by the wizarding community. There is no reason to think that the same qualities that suit these woods for use in regular spellwork would not also enhance the spells placed on a broomstick that allow the rider to control it.
One must remember that old maxim though: 'the wand chooses the wizard'. If the same property of certain woods which makes them effective for use in wands also prevents them from being used effectively by all but one witch or wizard manifests when these woods are used for broomsticks, it may soon be said that 'the broom chooses the wizard'.

Broomstick Manufacturing
1.) If you were a broomstick manufacturer, what unique spell or accessory would you include in your broomstick model to make it stick out from the others in the market?
In the creation of a family-friend broomstick insteaded for use by an adult wizard, I would choose to incorporate a weight-detecting charm. Such a charm would enable adult wizards to feel more secure in keeping a broom about their house when they have younger wizards and witches about who may be too small or too young to be aboard a full-sized broom. A weight-detecting charm could be set at a certain weight (to also allow use by school-age children) so that any less than the required weight would render the broomstick inert.
Broomstick Wood
2.) Do you believe that using wand woods improves control over a broomstick? Why?
Yes. Wandlore has proven that nature has its own magical components that should not be ignored when binding magic to an otherwise ordinary artifact. Keep in mind with potions - we use everyday ingredients in many of our common potions, but we do not hesitate to understand that their use becomes very different in light of the combination with more magical essences. We can eat an apple, but the peel is stewed in the juice of a mandrake and combined with the leaves of a alihosty tree, it becomes a Shrieking Laughter Elixir.
Thus, considering the more magical leanings of wood would be optimal. A broom must respond readily to its owner, be intuitive, and be trustworthy. A broom made of wood that is known to be temperamental in wandlore would not be a good choice for brooms created for everyday use.

1.) If you were a broomstick manufacturer, what unique spell or accessory would you include in your broomstick model to make it stick out from the others in the market?
If I were a broomstick manufacturer, I would include an extendable-seat spell. Only one rider per broom would be a thing of the past! You can take your whole family or perhaps you friend out for a ride over the city.
2.) Do you believe that using wand woods improves control over a broomstick? Why?
Yes, I believe using wand woods might improve control over a broomstick. This could be particularly apparent if the broom shares the same wand wood as the owner's current wand. It could make the user feel more familiar and, thus, more confident when riding their broomstick.

Excellent work on the answer to the first question! It sounds like an untapped gold mine to me! For the second question, I felt like you could have expanded a bit more, though I agree completely. I've known wizards to be very attached to their brooms! Maybe this is why.
- 20 Points to Hufflepuff
I particularly love your answer to the first question! I certainly know some wizards who lack good navigational skills. Also excellent point on using wand woods to make enchantments on the broomstick last longer! I'd love to see some testing go into this.
- 20 Points to Hufflepuff
I'd definitely use a broom with all-weather varnish! Sounds like something that could become a standard over time. Exellent points on the wand wood question. You're very right, the broomstick does not choose us!
- 20 Points to Ravenclaw
A more family friendly broomstick would be wonderful! I can't believe no one's thought of this yet. As for the wand wood question, I'm particularly pleased that you considered control over the broom to be more natural. Fluid movement is such a necessity for broomstick handling. It should feel like an extension of yourself!
- 20 Points to Hufflepuff
Hopefully the invisibility enchantment wouldn't be faulty like that car years ago! Sounds like an excellent addition otherwise. I also like the idea that a wand and broomstick could communicate!
- 20 Points for Slytherin
I'd love to see how a hands free wand device would work! Very intruging. Excellent point on broomsticks needing to retain their enchantments over time.
Thanks! I wanted to edit and add more as soon as I hit post, but I know the rules say we can only submit once. I was a bit overeager because it was the first lesson. 😅

Rox, Gryffindor
1.) If you were a broomstick manufacturer, what unique spell or accessory would you include in your broomstick model to make it stick out from the others in the market?
If I were a broomstick manufacturer I would try to improve the broom so that I get the most out of it's functionality. I would add an accessory which makes it able to take your companions on your travels with you (no, I'm not talking about the owls here, but cats, toads, etc.). It would be sorta like a cage, but with an extra safety modus which prevents them from falling out.
I would also add a system which makes it possible to adjust the speed and location, so that you can enter at the start of your travel where you want to go and how long you want to take to travel to the place.
The last edit I would make would be a safety option which makes it able to do other things while flying, without having to be afraid to fall down. Sorta like a shield, which prevents you from falling.
2.) Do you believe that using wand woods improves control over a broomstick? Why? I think wand wood could improve the extra options you can have on a broomstick. I also think that because of the connection between a wand and it's owner, it would be possible to improve the broomstick because of that. Controlling the broomstick is something you have to learn and I don't think that wandwood would make it easier for those that have trouble with flying.
Flying: Assignment 1 Broomstick Basics Bri, Hufflepuff
Question One
While broomsticks facilitate convenience, thrill, and a fundamental sense of wonder for members of wizarding society, their manufacturing process presents an environmental detriment that is less than ideal. Beliefs concerning the advantageous nature of woods harvested from older trees have become particularly prevalent in recent years due to the widespread propagation of anecdotal pseudo-magic-theory. Marketing advantages inherent in promoting these products have encouraged intrusion into forest environments that constitute vital habitats for various magical creatures. Therefore, if given the opportunity to manufacture my own line of brooms, I would emphasize the use of magically recycled materials as a means of creating a unique niche in the market.
Though it is an unconventional accessory, I believe that magically recycled parts should still hold considerable appeal alongside more ubiquitous features among broomstick manufacturers. Key to this initiative is the understanding that once sufficiently disassembled, all magic is nullified for individual broom parts (see note below). Residences and institutions alike are likely to house many old brooms that are sturdy, but too slow to be practical. Many consumers of high-quality brooms including professional Quidditch players and Ministry of Magic employees upgrade to new, faster models as soon as they appear on the market. Children quickly outgrow or possibly lose interest in toy brooms. Rather than discarding these old or outdated models as trash, they can be reclaimed and reduced to chippings using various deconstruction spells. The pieces can then be magically compressed and shaped to form new brooms, which can then be distributed at a reduced price, allowing more individuals access to a broomstick that carries the dual advantages of being more affordable and environmentally conscious than its competitors.
Perhaps most importantly, magically recycled parts lend themselves best to creating toy brooms and models targeted towards young children, which are made to be slower and less durable than standard or professional racing brooms. In the process of being introduced to the wonder of flight, children should also understand the importance of respecting the landscapes they fly over. A broom made from recycled parts serves to begin this discussion in a way that is immediate and real, while also fostering a spark of thrill about the possibility that a piece of their new birthday present might have once been flown by someone like Viktor Krum or Ginny Weasley.
Question One Note
This idea was taken from the assumption that after Harry Potter's Nimbus 2000 met the Whomping Willow, declaring it "broken beyond repair" meant that there was no way to reassemble the pieces and have them channel magic as before. This degree of destruction is what I mean by "sufficiently disassembledâ€, or basically reducing a broom to woodchips.
Question Two
The assertion that wand wood brooms hold an advantage over their mundane counterparts seems to stem from an over-simplified understanding of wand lore and its truthfulness most likely depends on how strongly an individual subscribes to that understanding. In a standard wizard’s wand, the wood is only one factor amid many that interact to allow a specific individual the means to most optimally harness their magic. The magical core material, length, and flexibility all influence the relationship between wand and wizard, and it is ultimately the former that selects the latter. In contrast, broomsticks are made with no other significant magical materials, and are primarily powered by advanced layers of spells. They are also standardized according to make and model, and professional broom users such as Ministry for Magic officials and professional quidditch teams usually purchase new racing brooms in bulk. Ultimately, it is the wizard (or witch) who chooses the broom.
Magical objects are infamous for having minds of their own, and a wand's willingness to yield to its chosen wielder vastly constitutes the reason a wizard is able to channel their magic and perform consistent spellwork. The relationship between wand and wizard is meant to last a lifetime, and to compare this to the fleeing acquaintance between broom and wizard, which is often severed when the next upgraded model arrives on the market, seems implausible. However, some individuals insistently report experiencing greater control, and rigorous research has not yet eliminated the possibility of a placebo effect occurring as a result of mere belief that this association exists. Ultimately, flying a broom made from wand wood could result in improved broom control, but only if the rider believes it does.
I have some more assignments graded for you today! We have some excellent ideas for broom features. I am confident that the industry of broomstick manufacturing will no doubt only get better from here!
- 17 points to Gryffindor
So to clarify I am understanding correctly, your feature would be an anti-thieving feature of sorts? Sounds handy. As for your answer for the wand wood question, mahogany is indeed a wand wood! Not always, but it is one of the more common wand woods. Purplewood would definitely give a unique look to the broomstick.
- 18 points to Slytherin
A built-in protego charm could be interesting, but would it be allowed in a Quidditch match? It seems like something that would be an unfair advantage and nullify the point of bludgers entirely.
- 20 points for Slytherin
Radar on a broomstick would be a wonderful addition! And you make some excellent points on the wand wood discussion.
- 20 points to Slytherin
Your features sound very helpful in teaching the next generation of Quidditch players!
- 15 points to Ravenclaw
Sign me up for testing in outer space! This sounds excellent! As for your portion on wand woods, you have some excellent supporting information, but I don't once see what your opinion on the matter is.
- 15 points to Hufflepuff
Many brooms already have an anti-jinx precaution in them. How would yours differ from the average broom? You made some excellent points in the wand wood discussion, however!
- 20 points to Slytherin
I can see how flashy additions could set your broomstick apart from the competition! Cruise control and rain guards sound fantastic as well. You made an excellent point on lending broomsticks! I never would have thought of that.
Oh, I guess I thought this stated my opinion:
"With more research, personalized wand wood could potentially enhance one’s flying." I figure there isn't enough research at the moment for me to be biased one way or the other, with such inconclusive data.
Sorry, I wasn't clearer! Thanks for the input. I'm cool with 15 points. :)

Question 1
If I were to manufacture brooms, as boring as that sounds, I would definitely enchant my brooms to leave a brightly colored streak behind it, or perhaps play music. As a Muggleborn witch, I find the lack of accessible music obnoxious at best. Being able to put on a light show, or create music would perhaps ease my utter boredom.
Question 2
Apparently its not easy to find wand worthy trees, and as the wizarding world's population continues to steadily increase, I think using it on something as frivolous as brooms seems unsustainable. There will always be Quidditch stars like Victor Krum to purchase those rare and sought after woods, but honestly, if at all possible, any old tree should be considered.
When considering broomstick manufacturing I personally understand the need for versatility. Customer needs change and they need to know their broom can change with them. I add climate controlling spells to the broom to ensure that it never became too hot or too cold for the person riding it, or their cargo. There would be a small basket, with an undetectable extension charm placed on it. Perfect for trunks, suitcases... spare children... the works! This broom can travel with you through seasons, life changes, climate changes, and is great for vacationing!
SPOILER (click to toggle)
Wand woods are chosen for wands because they are powerful, durable, and magic easily flows through them. When a wand is made, it's coupled with a core of magical origin, mine being Unicorn hair. The core is key to the wand. Wand makers alone know all the secrets to this fine art and even they have reported learning new things every day. Everyone's magic is different, everyone has a certain wood that their power flows more freely through and a magical source that their power is more attuned to. A wand chooses the wizard because of that very phenomenon. I believe that because of the way wand wood works, allowing magic to flow more freely through, a broomstick would be better controlled if it were made of wand wood but I also believe that, for the user to actually feel that extra control it would have to be made out of the same wood as their magic flows best through. In other words, the same wood as their wand.
As an aside, not entirely part of the question but something I can not guiltlessly keep to myself, I must also say that I think it would be quite dangerous in certain situations because a broom that allows magic to flow through it more easily could be more easily corrupted by magic from an outside source. For example, if someone were to try to jinx a broom, it may be more susceptible.

1.) If you were a broomstick manufacturer, what unique spell or accessory would you include in your broomstick model to make it stick out from the others in the market?
If I were a broomstick manufacturer I would include a custom order option where one could insert their wand into the very shaft of the broomstick. The broomstick would then partially imprint to the person. Ideally this would act as a lock, preventing unauthorized use. A simple password can be chosen so the owner could sell or lend their broomstick if so desired. In addition to the security feature, it would provide convenient access to one's wand while piloting the broomstick.
Furthermore once their wand was attached a few more customization options would become available. Someone concerned about safety could easily charm their broomstick to have better grip, or increase the shield barrier for any larger persons who may not fit inside the traditional barrier.
Tying into the second question, when adding one's own wand to the broom it would no doubt increase the broom to user chemistry allowing for more personalized flying experience.

2.) Do you believe that using wand woods improves control over a broomstick? Why?
Using wand wood absolutely improves one's control over the broomstick, provided their natural alignments are similar. Much like a wand, a broom manufactured from an element that conflicts with a person would be naturally more difficult for that person to learn. If one brand doesn’t fit, try another until you find one that suits you.

Good idea on the adhero spell, however I felt you could have expanded with this. Would it only help the grip with the rider's legs? Or would the hands be involved too? How would a Quidditch player be affected by it? Good job with the second question, though!

Anything that gets us to use Obliviate less is good in my book! Nice job with the second question too.

Chook's Answers
1.) If you were a broomstick manufacturer, what unique spell or accessory would you include in your broomstick model to make it stick out from the others in the market?
I would include a spell of invincibility and a machine gun as an accessory. That way our house would be able to win all the Quidditch games.
2.) Do you believe that using wand woods improves control over a broomstick? Why? I could answer this if I knew what wand woods are. I had to look it up and found this
Mr Ollivander introduces his notes on wand woods thus:"
“Every single wand is unique and will depend for its character on the particular tree and magical creature from which it derives its materials. Moreover, each wand, from the moment it finds its ideal owner, will begin to learn from and teach its human partner. Therefore, the following must be seen as general notes on each of the wood types I like to work with best, and ought not to be taken to describe any individual wand.
Only a minority of trees can produce wand quality wood (just as a minority of humans can produce magic). It takes years of experience to tell which ones have the gift, although the job is made easier if Bowtruckles are found nesting in the leaves, as they never inhabit mundane trees. The following notes on various wand woods should be regarded very much as a starting point, for this is the study of a lifetime, and I continue to learn with every wand I make and match.â€
So I think that using wand wood for a broomstick would be a waste of the wood and it should be used for its' proper purpose ... wands.
