!

We will still have the final say in a second queue, we just don't have the resources at the moment to judge every single pet every time they come through the queue. It makes so much more sense to get approval from the people who can help you make a better profile :)

That's what we're hoping for, ! We definitely need to make sure to think this through, that's why we're asking for feedback before we pull the trigger.

I'm hoping that this will encourage more people to apply and interact on the forums (this already happens, but having a carved out location for it would be very helpful!) and help one another out. Hopefully you guys can help us pre-approve pets and we'll be able to have more winners available.

Another issue that we hope this may help is how few pets we have available for judging/winning right now. I know lots of users have felt discouraged because of the lack of a "why did I not get approved" option, so this may be able to help that.

Again, we're taking ideas! What can we do to make this more interactive?

Oh goody. Visions of spamming "spare a vote" type posts everywhere like the neopets beauty contest are whirling through my head right now. Speaking as the biased ugly girl, I so freaking HATE beauty contest crap.
Please tell me this won&;t turn into that. :/

This is definitely a situation we're aiming to avoid! I don't think I'd be into it if you were allowed to have contests and such like other events. Removing the name could be part of it, but I don't see how helpful that would be in most cases since you could just look up the name of the pet if it was on any of the graphics. This is the biggest concern of mine--not making this really annoying!

That's a cool idea. Something I suggested to the programmers was having the pets that pop up (if they were randomly shown like the minion sorting) show based on how many votes they had--so everyone got voted on about as often.

Also, the downvote would be used in a Reddit sense, it would just mean the pet isn't ready! The two options would basically be, "yep, ready!" and "nope, not quite ready!" the way we're talking about it.

the only thing i can see coming from this is thread after thread after thread of "upvote my pet!!!!!" as well as the aforementioned popularity contest. not a fan, don&;t leave the spotlight wins in the hands of users. what i do find worth implementing is the checklist of what might be missing or w/e from a pet profile keeping it from living up to the minimal requirements.

The way I'm picturing this users aren't able to just link to their pets and gain votes that way. Again, I don't think that's all be sorted yet, but that's where my vote goes! I don't want to wade through that any more than you do! The forum would just be, "is my pet ready? what can I work on?" not "ME ME ME!!!"

This is really helpful, thank you guys! You touched on all the things we were worried about and have had some good suggestions. I like the idea of minimod(s) moderation, too. Food for thought!

Definitely! We already do that to a degree: we can't approve our own pets. I don't think anyone should be barred from entering, but we'd definitely address this!

- I'm sorry I wasn't particularly clear in my tumblr post (there's a reason I don't like replying there!) but here's a few thoughts of mine right now:

  • I am still accepting pets into the queue, because if I didn't, the queue would shut down completely, and that's not happening. We're at a point now where 5 wins a week would be totally possible again, but I don't want to switch up to that until we redo the system. I still might do that, but I'm due for a meeting on the system soon and would rather wait.
  • When I talk about 'more input into voting on aesthetics', I mean that right now, there are so few judges and there's a variety of tastes on subeta. I don't enjoy anime - but many users do. I have no idea what makes a good anime pet and what makes a bad one. With what we're planning, users will be able to 'like' the pet pages anonymously, so that staff can get an idea of what user opinion is. I'll still be going through (or a staff member will be) and actually putting the pets in the queue, but users will get to see what's in the queue and give a little opinion on it in order to be able to participate/help/enjoy what there is on offer.
  • We are taking all of the user input into consideration, but we also have to think about what resources staff have, and what will be the most beneficial to both sides in order to get the queue working again.
