A couple hours ago Buzzfeed posted an article with a picture of a dress. Link here

Some people see the dress as white and gold, while others see it as blue and black.

This is kind of freaking me out because 4/6 of my roommates see it as blue and black wheras one roommate and I think it's white and gold. I honestly can NOT see how anyone could see the dress as anything other than white and gold.

What color do you think the dress is? Why is this such a controversy?

(If this belongs in another forum, then please move it! ^^)

(Edit to fix link)

Thank you!

It looks white and gold to me. Although the white does have a hint of blue to it, which I think is because of the lighting in the photo. I don't understand how it could have any black in it, unless the picture itself changes.

I think it's a controversy though, because people love a good freak-out. XD

I have spent the last few hours thinking about this dress. The first hour it was white and gold. Like straight up white as snow, no hints of blue and it was gold. I asked my boyfriend and he said it was blue and black. It is now blue and black to me. I don't know how and I don't even think I wanna know how because I'm just so blown away that it was white/gold and now there is no trace of white or gold.

I haven't been able to see it as anything other than blue. The gold part is debatable, since it's always looked like black to me in poor lighting conditions or MAYBE a deep bronze. It freaked me out when the black part started getting brighter. I was sure it was a gif or something. Or the white/gold people were all trolling like that doritos/isopod image.

SPOILER (click to toggle) I'mma c+p an explanation I read. "It's a visual perception thing! If your eyes are straining (dim lighting conditions or lower-functioning light sensitivity) you see it as white and gold because your eyes are doing additive color mixing. If you're in good light or have good light sensitivity in your cones, your eyes perform subtractive color mixing and you see it as blue and black. I saw it as blue and black an hour ago at my office, and now at my apartment with somewhat dimmer lighting I can't see it as anything but white and gold."

This here is the actual dress for sale, just to put it to rest, haha.

I think it has way more than a hint of blue. It's periwinkle in that photo. I understand calling something slightly off-white with a yellow or blue tinge white, but there's a limit where it just isn't white anymore

That said, I stared at it long enough and kinda saw how people could think it would be blueish white and it's just in shadow. IDK ANYMORE

lol the reviews on that dress are gold (I think).

I can see the "gold" part, but for me, it's black and blue, with a hint of gold on the black (like a flash or reflection of light from above). I just don't understand how people see the white part...

When I first saw the picture I saw only bright white and gold. I asked my husband because I was sure he would see the same thing and he saw dark black and dark blue. Then I saw another picture of the same dress that shows it clearly as black and blue and when I looked back to the original picture all I could see was black and blue... very strange.

Throughout the day I have gone back to look at the original picture and have seen it white/gold again, black/blue, and even light blue and olive. At one point I had the picture open in two different windows side by side and even though it was the exact same file the one in the left window looked blue and black and the one in the right window looked white and gold at the same time. Which, doesn't even make sense because... science.

I assumed it was gold and white at first, thinking the poor lighting just cast a shadow on the white. I can see the blue, but I can't see the black unless I angle it in a certain way, and even then it still looks more gold, though I know it's black and blue.

I'm staring at it. I'm like, "it's black, it's black, it's black" BUT I STILL ONLY SEE GOLD. Why are my eyes defective :'c

It's such a huge controversy because no matter how understanding and empathetic people can be, it's hard to wrap your head around another person perceiving reality differently than you do. Perception is everything and people only perceive reality, not the actual reality itself. Freaky, huh?

I have consistently seen it as blue and dark gold. My boyfriend sees white and gold. That's interesting that some of you have switched perceptions.

If you guys are interested in further investigating this topic, I saw the first episode of Brain Games today (on netflix). The episode went over color-- there were a lot of similar images like this dress (optical illusions and color differentiations). It explained the psychological connections the brain makes for us to determine color and why we sometimes see things differently. I haven't seen the rest of this series, but I highly recommend that episode!

I hope you guys don't mind the ping; I coincidentally ran across that today and found it relevant.

Thanks, I'll definitely check that out! A friend of mine is just convinced the whole thing is a massive troll, but now I have proof that the human brain really is this weird :P

The Dress in better lightning, posted by the original poster swiked (tumblr)

I never saw it white/gold, no matter how much it was edited. But the crazy thing about this ''controversy'' is it's popularity. Why do so many celebrities care about it. Why is it on the news. It's amazing.

I see white and gold on my bright secondary screen and a barely blue and greenish-gold on my laptop's main screen. Definitely not a definitive blue and black so I colored tested it in Inkscape... A sample of the "blue" part of the dress has a hex code of 727c96 and a sample the "black" part of the dress has a hex code of 5a4b2a. So basically a periwinkle blue (not a bright blue) and a moderately dark brown.

People do perceive colors differently. (For example, I have blue gloves that have just hint of purple hue... My mother insists they are distinctly purple.) However, when you are viewing something on a computer screen, unless the person you are talking to has the exact same screen with the exact same calibration in the exact same environment, you will being seeing (at the very least) a slightly different image without taking personal visual perception in to account.

I am still at a lose as to how an unaltered photo of a bright blue and markedly black dress looks so... Not particularly blue or black. It would had to have been really bad lighting or a bad camera, quite probably both. o_O

I'm quaranteed it's white and gold. I've seen the picture of the real dress and I know I'm wrong, but it still shows up white and gold to me.

I thought the people who claim it's black and blue were trolling, but when my sister looked at it (on the same computer screen as I) she said it's black and blue. Also she thought I was trolling.
