I've tried a lot of them. Most repellents like ammonia, dichlorobenzene, naphthalene, and Camphor work for about a week before the scent fades, and it gets really pricey to keep replacing them (Plus some of those chemicals are pretty nasty.). The physical deterrents work for about the same amount of time before the bears figure out how to get around them. I've found the best deterrent is my little carbide cannon. It's loud, smelly, doesn't hurt the bear, and I can set it off from a safe distance from them. Banging on the deck with pots works pretty good too, but it's too short of a dash up the deck stairs for comfort. So far they always run away, but I'd rather not take chances.

Yeah, they recommended laying down plywood with three inch screws driven through it with the points up to hurt the bear's feet. But within two weeks one of the bears had figured out they were stronger than the plywood was and busted it up. The gal from the Bear League was blown away when I showed her, you could see the tooth marks in the wood plain. The one that's the most persistent already has two tags in her ear, so she'll most likely have to be euthanized if they have to trap her again..., so the neighbors have to put up with my cannon every so often.

If she's a repeat offender, euthanasia is probably the safest way to go. Are they going to try and trap them for you?

Only if I, or someone else she's pestering, files a complaint/request on her. I'd rather not if I can avoid it, her last cubs are only a year old and would have trouble surviving without her. Not that bears are endangered here :D..., but I won't call unless I absolutely have to. Hopefully she'll decide I'm too annoying and go nap somewhere else soon.

[edit] It has nothing to do with me liking an excuse to fire off the cannon every now and then..., I swear.

I finally did it, I finished my writing quest for the year and succeeded in writing 50,000 words in 30 days for this years NaNoWriMo. (http://www.nanowrimo.org) Now all I have to do is sell a manuscript.

: Sorry to hear you're having bear problems. Here in California they have a CANON that can be set off to fire automatically in intervals from every five minutes to every hour, it runs on bottled propane gas and is battery operated. It's most commonly used in orchards to scare away birds, but I imagine it could be used to scare away bears.

Sent you a couple more. I got a ton of kisses and old Rreign tamer items last night, instead of wreathed Rreigns. While I was glad for another bottle of Mead (Suds wanted my wearable for his TC), I didn't get many wreathed rreigns.

It's that has a couple bears that are wanting to move in with them..LOL But the bears seem determined to be there...and all i can see from other reports that making lots of noise will get them to move away eventually..

Hi all - I've been away awhile. I'm so sorry. I think many of you wished me happy birthday and I haven't seen those yet. Almost three weeks ago now, we had a huge wind storm, with some snow and tons of ice up here in Northern Idaho. Winds reached hurricane speeds. The scary part of that was that it effected our power lines in an extreme manner. We had no power for five days and many in our community had none for a week and a half. It's crazy, we know we use electricity in many ways. But when you don't have access and the temperature is dropping into the teens at night and only reaching to 30 as a high it can become very scary. From hot water for showers, to heating your food on the stove, to heating the house, electricity is a must. Our wood stove was a must, but without it's electric fan it didn't throw much heat. I was super grateful for my puppy curled up on my feet for warmth. I can tell you for sure that I am grateful for being born in this generation. We were blessed to regain power, but only tonight have we regained internet access. I'll be slowly catching up with mail, comments, gifts etc. Thank you all in advance. I'm sad to have missed Fireside. I hope you all had a blast in my absence. Hope to see you all more through December!
